I've been Playing Golf for: 20+ years. I've been actually truly trying to improve for 3 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 18-ish
My typical ball flight is: left to right
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: big slice or yank left

Videos:

The video is swings from 5 different dates over the last 3 weeks.

1: 12/26 - lessons I took in 2017/18 suggested correcting my slice bringing my takeaway WAY inside with the idea that it would create an inside swing path and then making sure I turn my right hand over at impact to create a draw. Didn't really work.

2 and 3: 12/27 feedback on that video said not to take away so far inside. Ok. Done. Still getting over the top.

4 & 5: during a lesson on 12/28 - the only face on video of the bunch

6: 12/30 - trying to get my hands to come down from top of backswing and get my right elbow in next to my ribs to allow an inside swing path.

7: 1/10 - same as 12/30

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

So, you're swinging well, well to the left…

What have you done to try to work on that in the past? How well do you actually practice (i.e. just making full swings "trying" to do something different is generally not a great way to go…).

Thanks for the feedback. I thought I had replied but apparently I didn't hit the send.

I took a lesson a few weeks ago and worked on some fundamentals. I have another lesson scheduled for next week and instructor said we'd be working specifically on how to solve the OTT move.

I will admit that most of my "practice" has been full swings at the range trying do it different. I have used the "hold the alignment stick sticking out from the end of your club and go through the swing in steps" drill and I get my hands to come straight down with that. I have read every bit of the "Stubborn Steepness" thread looking for drills and possible solutions. That thread has a lot of "lay the club down" at the top of the backswing recommendations and drills. If I make that move which will force a more shallow swing plane will that solve my issue? Is it that I'm too steep or is it that my 1st move from the top of downswing is to push my hands towards the ball and for my right shoulder to move towards the ball?

Thanks!

@Chasing_Bogeys

Try some 'non-full swing' practice too. You can learn a lot more and make changes stick better by slowing things down and even do partial swings. At full speed, changes are hard to make. A lot of us video our slow or partial swing to see if the change is there. You can also stop at different positions and use mirrors to look at those positions.

    • Day 27 (17 July 26) - Normally an 18 hole day, but due to commitments abbreviated the round to 9 holes (played the back nine at home course).  Had a solid session where even the worst miss (tee shot off 18) was fully playable.  Shot a solid 39 (6pars, 3bogies) - not dbls, no three putts - just boring golf.
    • Overall, well said. People have to be very careful in trying to describe very complex problem in simple terms. In this case, it is a clear fundamental misunderstanding of Newton's 1st and 3rd laws.  To clarify more on the misinterpretation of Newton's 1st law. The exact interpretation of Newton's 1st Law....  "Every body continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it" yea, a body will stay motionless unless a force acts upon it. An object will stay on its path of motion unless a force acts upon it.  I get it, complex physics problems are difficult. There is a lot of simplification done in most physics class when it is taught. A classic problem uses a frictionless surface. Projectile motion excludes drag and wind direction. Collisions are usually elastic. The golf swing is not a simple physics problem.  Yea, I think they got caught up the data on the graphs and are not truly understanding cause and effect.  If the golfer isn't first pushing into the ground, then the ground isn't going to push back.  The internal forces of the body create the motion, not the external forces from the ground. The ground isn't like what Psy uses to start his concert. 🤣 You probably need to be connected to the ground and have those GRF to help the body produce the motion you want. Your body has to move in the right way to produce the GRF which helps you move the body in the way you want. Body motion precedes the GRF.
