I recently picked up a half set of vintage PGA irons for my Sunday bag (see pick) but I’m having a heck of a time finding anything about the brand thanks to the name similarity with the ruling body. Any seasoned golfers or collectors out there who might be able to lend me a hand? To be clear I don’t expect them to have value I just would like to learn about the history!

This sounds like a fun idea! Thanks for the suggestion.

I am taking a golf trip for a friends bachelor party that includes some non golfers. What are some go to games that you like when in a situation like this to keep things fun for everyone and to keep the pace of play up? This group is two fairly skilled players (single digit handicaps), one mid handicap golfer and two that rarely play.

Cheap Ball Conundrum
golfncowboy replied to HitAndGiggle's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
As far as cheap balls go the top flight gamer line is my go to. Dicks usually has them $30 for 2 dozen. I've played it side by side with a pro v and there is a difference but not enough of one to justify the price discrepancy. My friends give me hell about it but I usually beat them anyway -
I don't mind if people listen to music on the golf course. Golf is a leisure activity not a wake

YouTube Instruction Discussion
golfncowboy replied to RussUK's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I agree with @Patch. Youtube is best for its intertainment value but it's hard to discredit the instruction completely. My best example right now would be Rick Shiels and Peter Finch. I like their course vlog videos and equipment reviews more than anything, but they both do videos on their practice routines trying to qualify for The Open. Recently they've both talked some about the swing changes they're making and listening to them explain what they're doing makes me think in ways I wouldn't otherwise about what I'm doing in my swing. Its not taking a single drill or something but maybe just learning about the swing from a different perspective that I find the most value in. -
Hey @freshmanUTA, I've been in your shoes before and it's not fun at all. It sounds like your doing the best thing you can do already, working with a professional in person. The only other thing I could suggest to your question is to pick up a wedge and work on half swings and making good contact. There's a video @iacas shared with me on my swing thread that illustrates what I'm getting at. The longer the swing the more issues that can arise, in my opinion and just making good contact on short shots can go a long way for getting some confidence back. Just my semi educated take! Good luck! heres the video

Makes sense! Thank you. Is there a reason my body is stalling?
-
Gotcha. I've used that feel in the past, although with a different goal in mind. Just to clarify, I'm trying to use my body to drive the club through impact and not let the club head overtake my hands and finish with long arms?
-
Thanks for the advice. Sorry about the less than stellar angles. Everything you said makes a ton of sense. I've noticed that my body stops after impact but never have been able to make it change. I'll put the drill into practice.

Sure thing! I got out to the range Sunday afternoon and tried to get some better video. It's all iPhone unfortunately but that's all I have to work with. Both of these are with a five iron. I hit the ball well that day, but contact was inconsistent at times both thin and fat. I was really working on staying centered and on alignment, as those are the things that consistently sneak up on me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Irons for a 6-handicapper...
golfncowboy replied to hugh147's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I was in a similar situation a few years back. I went with the Callaway X-forged irons. If you look them up they're the 2009 model. Great clubs and helped me go from an 8 or 9 to a 4 hcp. I still see a set on the used rack at GolfSmith from time to time. Definitely worth a shot if you can find them. I play a 21* hybrid in place of the three iron though. I'm not that brave! -
I have a pretty mixed bag, but I don't think I have owned enough different clubs to be considered a loyalist to one brand or another. I like to keep an open mind and whatever works best is what I'm going to play, but i do prefer the "classic" looks of Titleist drivers and volkey wedges. Im going to go with what works best, but that's where my eye is drawn first.

Longest Iron in Bag... And More
golfncowboy replied to Reval14's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Normally a 4 iron but I have a 1 iron in the bag right now on windy days. I hit it well and it rolls forever off the tee. As soon as the grass turns green I'll probably shelve it. -
I worked like hell at it. I'm not a natural athlete, and as far as anything with a moving ball is concerned I'm not very good. Golf has been my passion since I was 13 and but I wasn't a single digit until I was in college. My body had finally stopped growing and I was able to grove my swing. What really pushed me over the edge was making consistent contact with the center of the face and improving my game from 50 yards in. Once missing a green isn't as big of a deal the strokes really start to fall off and you don't worry about missing so you miss less. May be a bit of confirmation bias but confidence is key.

Hey guys, I've been struggling with the putter lately especially in the 4-8 foot range. My reads are generally good as is speed but my path is seriously in consistent. I know that putting isn't all it's cracked up to be as far as importance in scoring, in that I agree with LSW. My issue is largely that I am missing birdie and par opportunities inside of 10 feet. I'd love to be fit for a Edel putter but it's not in the cards at the moment. Can anyone recommend some drills to help me out?
-
Does anyone know if there is a chart or a general rule of thumb for these things? I know that it depends on swing speed and some other factors but my searches have yielded inconsistent results. I plan on going to the pro I take lessons from who is a top 100 club fitter among other accolades but before I spend the $ to do this and buy a new driver I want to do my due diligence and make sure what Ive got isn't as good as it gets. Club head speed with driver is 105 mph.
-
The results are (sort of) in. I took my current driver in to the local golf smith and tested it against some of the newer demo clubs, specifically the Ping G and Titleist 915 d3. I'm no golf pro and only have what the Internet tells me and what the simulator shows to go by but the results surprised me. My average swing speed with all clubs was 105mph and ball speed somewhere around 155. My current driver had an average carry of 248 and total average of 260. Spin rates were in the 3200 range. The Ping G was the winner for me. With the same swing and ball speeds it was spinning much lower 2300 ish and had an average carry of 270 total distance round 290. Huge improvements! This was all on a gc2 simulator and the numbers are from memory but they're close. I need to go see a fitter but it looks like it's time for a change!

Second Shot Par 5 Third at Seneca Hickory Stick - Strategy?
golfncowboy replied to 9wood's topic in Golf Talk
Assuming everything as is in your picture I'm going for it. Of course as @DaveP043 said there's always the environmental factors to consider and how well I'm playing but if I've got 218 into a par 5, 8/10 times I'm going for it. That's a smooth 3 hybrid -
Irons etched with Masters Logo and Name
golfncowboy replied to nevets88's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Clubs that awesome and they set their bag up upside down! I don't know why, but that bothers me. -
Most of my tinkering is with the putter. I like to watch the pros strokes and try to take things from them or try to emulate a technique or trigger when I practice. It's usually just for fun but sometimes I stumble on a game changer! But I'm with you 100% on tinkering being half the fun.

It has been through a few Oklahoma summers in my trunk! And I like your thought process haha my wife on the other hand…

That was a gc2 simulator the other day, that said I could believe it's close to that. And your right it couldn't hurt to go see what's out there!

I have been playing a Titleist 909 d2 driver for just shy of 6 years. I was fit for it and still hit it well, I would say driving accuracy is a strong suit in my game, but have been wondering if it might be worth upgrading this year. As far as distance goes I'd say I'm not long average carry is about 245-250 and would like to pick up a few more yards. I know you can't buy distance but sometimes the improvements in tech over a period of time can make a difference. Has tech come far enough since 2010 to make a difference?
