  1. And when your overall swing improves and you hit more greens, you will find that you are putting from a greater distance in most cases. Now, three putts will become more common as you struggle to get the first putt into the circle of friendship. Personal experience. That's when I started practicing putting more and it really has paid off.
  2. I can stop hitting topped/fat shots? Really? When?
  3. That's what I thought last season and my short game went straight to hell. I learned a hard lesson. There is no part of the game that you can always have an innate grasp of and I prefer to KEEP the short game as a strength. And I totally disagree with your thoughts about practicing putting. Now, there is a place you can really shave strokes. I always hit drivers and irons when I practice, but I spend more time on the short game. I hit drivers on the range before I play and try to keep a single swing thought to take to the course. JMO.
  4. I have a 5-wood that I hit almost as far as my 3-wood. There is too much of a gap between my 4-hybrid and 5-wood. I don't want to get something that I hit LESS far than the 5-wood. I think I need to replace all 3 (3-wood, 5-wood, 4 hybrid). But then there will probably be a sizeable gap between by 5 iron the the 4-hybrid. What to do? I'll probably do nothing.
  5. But how much time do you have to work on your swing to narrow that dispersion cone? In a lot of cases, it requires a complete do-over.That takes a lot of time and most amateurs don't have the time to make that happen. Personally, I take a driving lesson every early spring and just try to keep positive swing thoughts throughout the season. I only can get to a range once or twice a week and that ain't enough to tweak my driving. On the holes where you miss the fairway and don't have an acceptable lie, you should lay up to a spot where you can score with your short game, and getting an acceptable short game is much easier than tearing your swing down. Avoid the OB as much as you can. I have a pretty wide dispersion cone myself (and I don't hit it nearly as far as you) and we have 9 straight holes with OB right. I hardly ever hit it out. I aim down the left edge of the fairway and hope for the best. On the holes where I miss the fairway, I still have ways to score. I play to my strength, and my strength is my short game because I spend most of my limited practice time on it.
  6. I believe that IS the rule. Declare a provisional, and you can hit it until you reach where the first ball is. If the original ball is neither lost nor out of bounds, the player must abandon the provisional ball and continue playing the original ball. No strokes count on the provisional ball.
  7. I bought a piar of Mizunos a few years back and, after using them only 3 times, they started fraying. I have a pair of Footjoys that I have used at least 6 times. Don't leave them in your bag after using them. Let them dry out in a dry area.
  8. The caddie master should be able to tell you the required rate, and the tip is up to you. For example, our required rate is $35.00. Anything above that is considered a tip. The kids who are mules (bag-carriers) usually get no more than $50.00 total, and the caddies who really know the job get anywhere between $60-75.00. I used to be a caddie so I understand what the job entails and I tip accordingly.
  9. I've been using the B330-RX. Kind of pricey though. How does the e6 perform when hitting full shots into greens with your irons?
  10. Our course isw in a valley and we cam often get very wet conditions. When the course is wet, we use the exceptipn allowed, which is anywhere through the green . Not in hazards, of course. 4. Course Conditions – Mud, Extreme Wetness, Poor Conditions and Protection of Course a. Lifting an Embedded Ball, Cleaning Temporary conditions that might interfere with proper playing of the game, including mud and extreme wetness, warranting relief for an embedded ball anywhere through the green or permitting lifting, cleaning and replacing a ball anywhere through the green or on a closely mown area through the green .
  11. You've played Cypress and Augusta? Lucky you! I don't even have them on my bucket list as I am sure to be disappointed. Just knocked two more off the bucket list this year though, Oakmont and Bethpage Black.
  12. The only time I touch my ball is if it's in GUR or if they have announced lift-clean-place. We DO play winter rules in, well, winter. Never before Thanksgiving and never after April 1. If people think it is OK to just move their ball, I don't want to play with them.
  13. I belong to a private club so, from a finacial standpoint, it pays to play at home. If I play 65 times, 55-60 are at my course. I rarely play public courses unless I'm on a golf trip. I'm lucky enough to get to play some of the local private courses (Philly area) in team matches and with friends.
  14. I think it depends on how much time that you have. If you have the time, by all means, work on your swing and your ball striking. But if you are asking how to lower scores in the short term, here's a suggestion. Back in my younger years, when I was working harder at my job, raising a family and didn't have as much time to work on my swing, I was getting frustrated about being a 25 handicap. I couldn't hit it out of my shadow, and was considering giving up the game. My pro told me that he could help me reconstruct my swing in order to get better, but he understood that I didn't have the time. Since the strength of my very-weak game was keeping it in play off the tee, he decided to teach me how to play from 100 yards in. I became a very acceptable short game player and, by the end of that season, I was a 17 handicap. I've worked on my swing and ball striking over the years and even got into single digits for a half season a few years back. One thing that is always there is the 100 yards-and-in game and, as a result, I can score from anywhere. I'm not a great putter, but I usually give myself a very makeable putt. I frustrate the hell out of guys who hit it 40 yards past me off the tee.
  15. I ws hitting balls last Sunday at our range and there was a Junior tournament that day. There was a ton of kids hitting balls in preparation and one of the Dads was walking the range and giving kids advice. I know this guy and he can't play a lick, nor does he know anything about the golf swing. I know he was annoying some of the better players but they were too polite to talk back to an adult, so I finally went over to him and politely asked him to leave them alone, as they were preparing for a big day. He muttered something and went over to his kid, but I know it was killing him to not walk the range and give bad advice.
  16. I might have considered Bo VanPelt instead of Furyk, but I guess Love III got it right.
  17. Well, I belong to a CC and I can tell you that I don't know one person there who would have anything to do with "YOU DA MAN!", or anything like it. Not sayin' they're "better", but just sayin'...
  18. My club used to host a PGA event years ago and, by the second year, the pros figured out that they had a better angle to both of the greens on adjacent holes from the respecitve adjacent fairways. After a few years of it, the PGA told us that we needed to make a local rule and put OB stakes in between the two holes during the tournament. We never did it otherwise.
  19. Got rained out yesterday. Last round was Thursday ( 138/72.6). Course handicap, 11. I was 10 over par after 7 holes and bemoaning my game when one of my playing partners mentioned that he thought I was shuffling my feet a little during the swing. I firmed up my stance and went 2 over (double bogey, bogey, 8 pars, birdie) the rest of the way. Once I firmed my base I hit almost every single shot solid. Finished with 84 and it could have been better if I made some putts.
  20. Anybody think Phil is going to stick with the claw? I can't believe he's trotting this out in the playoffs, but he's had a pretty bad season with his putter.
  21. My brother and group from our club played both County Down and Portrush in the spring and I can't get a consensus from them about which one they liked best. They loved them both. My brother says County Down is his favorite golf course in the world, not just links, and he's pretty much played everywhere. The best I ever played, IMO, is Pacific Dunes in Bandon.
  22. I keep this book in my locker. I read it every year before the golf season, and I read excerpts that will help me with my confidence before big tournaments. Target focus is always something that I need reminding about. I see bunkers off the tee in my sleep. I am definitely a better putter after reading Rotella's books.
