  1. Shot a 92 in my first stroke play event in 5 years. Was playing very mediocre. Not horrible, but certainly not good. I think that some of it can be chalked up to nerves. I was nervous on the first tee for the first time in years! It really felt good.
  2. If he can't get things turned around soon Nike is going to pull the plug on him!
  3. As for the article claiming that the Top Flite is the most played ball in North America, I think that must be taking range balls into consideration. I think every range I go to uses Top Flite, but I very rarely find them on the course. As for the D2 Feel, I will definitely give it a shot next time I'm strapped for cash.
  4. My ball marker is a just the logo for the University of Alabama. I mark my Nike One's by outlining the top of the swoosh with a blue sharpie. Just a little mark that gives some depth to the logo.
  5. It was my senior year in high school and I had just gotten my first set of golf clubs the night before (took the plastic off of them myself). The next day I skipped my last period to play a little par 3 course right across the street from the school. When I started out, it was really windy and looked a little bit ugly, but I didn't really care. Right after I hit my teeshot on the 7th hole, it started raining really hard. I'm talking about Vietnamese monsoon hard. I was determined to keep going though. I put the hoodie on my bag and proceeded to the next hole. I tossed a ball onto the eighth tee and hit as soon as I could get my feet set. It was the best shot of my early golfing career, with the ball coming to rest about 10 feet from the whole (still in the torrential downpour, mind you). So anyways, to wrap things up, when I was putting out on the ninth and final hole, the tornado siren started going off. So I ran and threw my clubs in the trunk and hit the road. With just a ten minute drive, I got home by 3:15. I found out the next day, that all of the students had been held at the school until about 4:30, while the storm was blowing over. That is one of those memories that I will never forget.
  6. Do you post your tournament scores to you handicap? I guess it wouldn't make that big of a difference if you don't play in a bunch of tourneys compared to normal rounds.
  7. I would say Mizuno is comparable to Gonzaga (though not from a mid-major conference). They still aren't a Duke or Kansas, but they have been there enough that people know the name. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nickent bust up some brackets. They have some potential, but they could just use a couple of good breaks.
  8. I shot a 90 with a staggering 43 putts. 7 three-putts and 1 four-putt. I'm not going to make any excuses about how the greens had been aerated and how I just had my putter regripped. I'm not one to make excuses... I hit 8 greens in regulation, including driving a 273 yard par 4 (I three putted from about 25 feet for a par). My wedge play was very bad too. I bladed a bunch of chips, resulting in at least a few of the three putts. All in all, I really did enjoy myself because I was flat out stroking my irons. I've just got to get my short game sharpened up before I can start scoring well.
  9. I spend alot of time getting scratched up in the briars.
  10. You don't even have to use the Google Earth application anymore (good for me because my computer is slow). Just go your course through Google's map web interface ( http://maps.google.com ). Then on the left side click My Maps. Then Distance Measurement tool. Then just click "I'm feeling geeky" and select yards or meters. Voila!
  11. The drive 30 yards away. The golf ball is constantly decelerating from the time it leaves the club face. This is due to the resistance from the air.
  12. Ditto on the request for completed pics

    Loopr

It is a free stat tracker located at www.loopr.com . It doesn't keep as many stats as some of them out there, but the interface is very clean and easy to use. Personally, I really enjoy using loopr. I've been using it since the time that they created the "golf game" application on the facebook. I recently had to open a new account though because I couldn't access facebook from work.
  14. Ah yes... point taken. Also, the concept of the tournament scores being taken more into account is pretty intriguing. Basically, I don't want to be worried being called a sandbagger when I'm playing well. Considering the (positive) effect that it will have on my handicap I'm not going to worry about this anymore. My goal is to get into single-digits before the end of the year, so I guess I will have to beat my handicap regularly anyways.
  15. Yes, I do use the ESC score. Typically my blow up holes are triple bogeys though. It isn't so much the way that one score kills my round. Its the way I struggle to recover from it on the holes after it. It is not uncommon for me to follow up a triple bogey with a couple of double bogeys. I'm working on getting an even keeled attitude, but I'm not there yet. Not all of my rounds fall into this category of falling apart on the back nine. Sometimes it will take me a few holes to get warmed up (see this rather embarrassing scorecard: http://www.loopr.com/round/show/22537 ). I guess the underlying thing here is that I am a very streaky player. Maybe my streakiness is why I have a problem with the odds that are thrown around regarding handicaps. I feel like there may be days where I'm "in the zone" and shoot 8-10 under my handicap. Then again, that may just be wishful thinking. Again, I will officially recieve my first handicap on friday with the next revision date. So I don't have a history of shooting below my handicap. I'm just posing the idea from my perspective.
  16. Yet another reason I love TGW http://www.tgw.com/customer/category...TEGORY_ID=9628
  17. There is something that kind of irks me about this whole handicap situation. Everyone keeps throwing around these odds of shooting X number below your handicap. They make it sound like your score for a particular round is the same as getting dealt a hand of cards in a poker game. I just have a big problem with this because I have a hard time concentrating for 4.5 hours when I'm just playing with my buddies. As a result, I will usually have at least one blow up hole on the back nine. However, I feel like when the money is on the line I'm probably going to be more focused and as a result I will probably shoot better scores. I just don't feel like it is accurate to place odds on shooting a certain score without taking into consideration the particular scenario/course conditions/pace of play/etc. Please don't think that I'm defending sandbaggers. I think sandbaggers are everything that is wrong with this world. Just so you know where I'm coming from: I've only started keeping a handicap this year, and I plan on playing in a few handicapped tournaments throughout the year. The best score that I've ever shot was an 82, which just happened to be my 4th score to be posted to my handicap . So anyways, please don't label me a sandbagger based on my comment.
  18. This is what hand I use: Golf: Right Softball: Left Basketball: Right Bowling: Left Racket sports: Left I also write left-handed, but use scissors with my right hand.
  19. Sometimes you just gotta let folks know you are there.
  20. Question: There is a Canadian Geese walking right in front of the green that you are about to hit at. Rather than spend 10 minutes going up to the green and scaring the bird off, you go ahead and hit your ball. The shot is skulled and hits the bird, killing it. Are you in the same boat as Tripp? Sure, you were not trying to hit the bird, but you knew the bird was in the vicinity of where you were going to hit the ball.
  21. Mind posting a link to the original thread? edit: I found it... http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10413

    Grrrrrrr

This is a big can of worms, but I will keep it short. Basically, with the introduction of Web 2.0 and user-generated content (see Wikipedia, Digg, etc), everybody from all different backgrounds can suddenly pretend to be an expert at whatever. Before this time, the only reading material out there was magazines and books which are all written by people that usually know what they are talking about and then editted by many people before they ever make it to print. Nowadays, you can just go to Wikipedia and say that 90% of all are mentally retarded. Then this is passed off as fact until someone corrects it. The same principle applies to this forum. Don't believe everything you read here because there is no way to verify the "truthiness" of it. After time you will be able to recognize users that consistently give good suggestions and you can put more faith into the things they say. I believe the reputation points are an attempt to make this recognition easier. So much for keeping this short. I could talk all day about the topic of user-generated content.
  23. 1.) Get an official handicap (will be done when the next revision date rolls around) 2.) Get involved in some competitive golf (I'm signed up for the GCAT) 3.) Get the handicap down into single digits (this one is going to take more work on my side)
  24. I was 17 when I started the game (22 now). I had a similar experience as the last couple of posters because I'm naturally left-handed. My dad and the pro decided that it would be better for me to learn right-handed as those clubs are easier to come by. I still play softball left handed.
  25. That first post is hilarious. Here is the obligatory Charles Barkley swing... http://youtube.com/watch?v=s50K65PNeBU and in slow motion... http://youtube.com/watch?v=DFtoeQlO0Ho
