  1. I was once playing in the rain, tried to hit an 8i to a pin 140 yards away uphill. I hit the ball reasonably solid, but the club slipped right out of my hands and flex 60 yards up into a big tree guarding the right side of the hole. I had to throw my other clubs at it to get the thing down...
  2. I put them on regular style so my playing partners can clearly see that I'm cool enough to use "golf pride" grips, and not some crappy sharpro look-alikes...
  3. Congrats wedge... I'd love to knock that much off my hdcp, but i've been stuck in the same place for a year... hopefully soon i'll feel your happiness
  4. In support of the long ball, its pretty cool to be able to hit a shot that the other people you are playing with just are not capable of hitting. I rarely play with someone who is able to hit the ball farther than I can, but doesn't mean I'm always really putting some juice into one and hitting 190 yard 7 irons. People are impressed if i decide to because they cannot, but in terms of your normal golf shot, no its not important or smart. Whats sexy about it is doing something others can't.
  5. Dear "That Golfer" While I know you enjoy playing, and you want to improve, please don't pose like a priss after every single practice swing. The object of a swing is to hit the shot correctly, not to end up in the most annoyingly posed finishing position imaginable. There really is no point to contorting your wrists to bring the club all the way around behind your neck to finish pointing up in the sky to the left of the target again. Well, maybe I could see a point to it if you actually were hitting good shots, but of course this is not the case. Form follows function my friend. Dear "That Golfer" If I'm playing from the white tees, and the course is slow and everyone is cranky, please don't tee up a ball and stand at the blues behind me while I'm teeing off. Same goes for when my girlfriend is playing from the reds. You aren't going anywhere, I'm not going anywhere, and all you're doing is rushing my group and making life more miserable. Just sit in the shade of your cart's canopy and enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass, or the sounds of birds singing. Feel free to tee it up once we're on the way to play our seconds. Dear "That Golfer" I applaud you for practicing the short game... I really do! Clearly your intentions are pure. BUT there really is no need to bring your shag bag with 300 golf balls to the crowded municipal chipping green. I know its nice to be able to stand in one place for 50 minutes, chipping a ball every 10 seconds, without having to walk onto the putting surface to retrieve even a single ball. However, for the rest of us, the smattering of mishit balls strewn about the green and the massive pile collecting around your target seem a little disconcerting. Also, I wonder if you are aware that the presence of so many golf balls around the hole really distorts the results of you last 150 chips, as its not impossible for a ball to roll more than 3 feet without striking another. Lets try to keep it to "a hand full" of balls please, for everyone's sake.
  6. reading this thread hurts my elbow...
  7. If you putt the ball to within a few feet, it is actually etiquette to give you the option to putt out your ball.
  8. Yeah I get pretty nervous. Sometimes I even have a bit of trouble sleeping the night before. But mostly its excitement, not so much fear. After hitting my first drive, I'm comfortable the rest of the round. When I played competitive hockey I had a few big games where I felt ill beforehand. I would have to go to the bathroom and splash some water on my face and breath deeply. Once I got on the ice it was gone though. Just the way I'm wired i guess.
  9. Yea I'll never go to dicks again for any kind of service. I once tried to have them replace my driver's shaft after the old one broke just above the hosel. I worked with an employee to find a new shaft, picked a grip... everything all set pick it up in 2-3 days. Then i get a call saying they don't have the equipment to bore out the old shaft, so they can't replace it. So I ended up driving back to pick up my driver head. No apology, no nothing. That's an hour of my life I will never get back. Edwin Watts have no problem with it. I'll go there to buy goods though.
  10. 49 putts is out of this world bad... my guess is that you need some serious work on your speed.
  11. I think short game is the bigger issue. Its so hard to be precise rolling the ball from your hand. Maybe you should bet on 9 holes to limit the pitch count and thus the danger of this experiment.
  12. I have ordered from them 4 separate times. Never a problem, always fast shipping, I will absolutely buy from them again. Also, I've used their ebay store, and that process was flawless as well.
  13. That's a reference to a Churchill quote, I believe. While I don't believe that its a true statement, I don't judge a person's worth or character for believing it. And I think a lot of great people believe this quote is true; it is not "simpleton". Watson, by all accounts I have heard, is an absolute gentleman.
  14. Towel Club brush Altoids tin w/ tees in it 2 sleeves of balls (optimal amount for carrying IMHO) Rangefinder Rainhood Small notebook Plastic Bag w/ 2 pence coins Sunblock Water bottle
  15. Bingo. My best guess is you are hitting it out on the toe of the driver.
  16. I've been spoken to about doing this... but I still think that if you are ready, and the other player isn't, and you're not playing a match, you should play your shot. It just makes sense.
  17. I think it would help me lots with alignment. A lot of times I hit it right and people tell me that was where I was aimed. Also, having the confidence and reassurance that I am aimed correctly would help make a more confident swing/stroke. But it probably would only shave 1 maybe 2 shots a round...
  18. I was shocked to notice you have a 31 hdcp after watching you swing. I think you have a lot going on that looks really good. My suggestions (coming from the old video): 1) A bit wider stance (don't overdo it, just a bit wider) 2) Try to sway less. I think a little sway is acceptable, but not as much as you have. 3) You slice because you try to hit the ball left of where your stance is aiming you. It could be because you're trying not to hit right so you pull it left, but this gives you a slice. Think about hitting the ball just right of center field and I bet you will straighten out your slice. The new video looks much better on the swaying, and just in general. But i agree you do need to widen that stance. I don't know if maybe your instructor is trying to keep your stance narrow to free up your hips so you will start from the ground up as everyone has said... Still slicing?
  19. Small thing, and its a bit hard to see, but I'm feeling like you regrip your left hand just before swinging, and you regrip into a stronger position. Your right hand looks to be too much in the palm, and too much "under" the club. I'm not an expert, but I think you need some work on the grip in general.
  20. This is the correct approach. My HS had tons of kids who played "rec golf". We also had a varsity team, but to start i would go with a recreational club setting.
  21. exactly what i was going to say. Pretty sure Hogan would back us up too...
  22. As long as people who golf know what they are, there isn't really a problem... I had a horrendous situation with some "people who golf" who thought they were golfers. I was paired with these 3 old guys who at first seemed pretty chill. I was given and picked up a 2.5 foot parr putt... something I wouldn't normally do but I felt like I was playing in their group, "when in Rome" etc... BIG mistake. One of the guys who didn't give me the put started going on about how "You gotta make those, gotta make em" after it was HIS buddy who gave me the putt. So i re-placed the ball, and sank it. The worst part was I had to make it "Because its for par", as if that should have any bearing on that sort of thing. Now it was annoying that I had to hear about it for the rest of the round EVERY time someone had a putt inside 6', but the real horror ensued when I missed a 3 footer on 10. These guys thought it was their duty to teach me about golf i'll tell you what... And after hearing about one guy's even par 9 holes last weekend, and having to endure watching him hit shots 45* offline... I wish I had not played that day.
  23. Legend of Bagger Vance "The greatest game there is.... Ask anybody. It's fun, it's hard...and you stand on the green grass, and it's just you and the ball. There ain't nobody to beat up on but yourself... It's the only game you can call penalty on yourself. If you're honest, which most people are. There just ain't no other game like it." Gets me every time...
  24. 4 years ago, I came to the 480 yard par 5 18th needing 6 to break 90 for the first time. On this hole, you drive out of a shoot and down a HUGE open fairway (i mean 100 yards wide, you cannot miss it) all downhill. Thinking there was no way I would miss it, I pull driver and decide to rip it down there like I had been doing all day. Somehow, I hit the ball offline, and it hit the last tree framing the opening of the chute some 30 yards away, a big diseased pine tree with only half its bark left. The ball hits the bare wood of this tree's trunk and comes rocketing back, stopping about 5 feet in front of me on the next tee box up. I manage to recover from there, hitting a couple long irons to get myself within about 60 yards of the green (downhill remember...) There is a small lake just in front of the green, maybe 25 yards of which you must carry. I was laying 3, so all i needed was to hit the green and 2 putt for my 89. I took a good 2 minutes getting ready to hit that wedge, and as soon as I got to the top of my 3/4 swing, I suddenly thought "Make sure you don't thin it"... so I made sure, flipped my hands at it, and hit 2 inches behind the ball... splash. A drop, a pitch and 2 putts later I have a 91. The way that felt, I'm sure I too would have had no chance in a playoff
  25. +1 on this. You really have to diagnose the specifics of the problem to be able to work on fixing it. I, for example, Lag very well, but miss 2/10 from 3 feet. Therefore I'm hitting a lot more 3 footers in my practice routine.
