Get fitted for EVERYTHING!! Even your putter!!!
grandaddy510 replied to SVTGolfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
i also found out the hard way that balance makes a huge difference, even in different toe balanced putters. the first quality putter i bought was a studio style newport plumber neck. i assumed that since my stroke was inside to inside that any toe balanced putter would work. feel was excellent and i got a good deal on a very nice used one so all was good. after a while i noticed i was pushing quite a few putts to the right. well the studio style has a 45* toe hang, not to mention i was choking down slightly on a 35". i decided to try a few different putters and found that the ones with greater toe hang were easier to release the putter head, no more pushes! also the 33" fits much better. picked up the rife cayman brac, slapped a lamkin 3rd gen and those par savers are starting to sink now. -
Half-degree Lofts
grandaddy510 replied to The Recreational Golfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
because a 10.5 goes straighter than a 10 and further than an 11??? -
i was gaming multi-compounds and loved them. although i realized i needed a midsize. i decided to try out the PURE after reading about them. got the midsize wraps on ebay for $60 shipped for 13 with air gun attachment. these things have a perfect amount of tackiness, medium firmness. the .6 core fits perfect for my hands. its a very comfortable grip and very easy to install (if you have an air compressor). they guarantee the tackiness for a year and they say they take even longer to wear. they have a few different firmness, styles and sizes http://www.puregrips.com but i'd check ebay you'll probably save about $30

I get my tweak online. if i need to demo something i'll go to the store but i'm always checking ebay and craigslist. everything in my bag is from ebay or tgw. a lot of my old stuff was also from ebay and craigslist. if i can find it 8/10 condition i'd much rather get it used than new.

I like it. forgiving but workable. the half degree suprisingly makes a difference getting the ball up and holding greens

How Many Wedges Do You Carry?
grandaddy510 replied to teece31's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
when i switched to my current irons the 45PW was a pretty big gap to my 52 vokey. i never used a 5w or 2h so i was only bagging 13 clubs anyways and the AP1s came with a 50 gap. so i had the local shop bend the em to PW 45 (stock) GW 50 to 49 Vokey 52 to 53 Vokey 56 to 57 it gives me more confidence knowing i can have pretty much a full swing to carry anything in the 85-125 range on the short par 4's or laying up on the 5's. of course it adds another demension to your short game which i'm still in the process of learning lol -
I played them for a few months. they were a bit heavy for me but could be different for others. they did their job and for the price you can't beat it if you are trying to save some cash. only thing i didn't like was the spin. of course from the fairways and hitting down on it it will spin but i can tell you they spin no where near as much as vokeys or mizunos. not sure about cleveland because i've never hit them. night and day from the rough, with the vokey you can get it to roll out a couple feet out of some tough stuff, with the watson, you have to play for a lot more roll. some might like it but i just felt i didn't have as much control as i wanted. but 3 wedges for $100 is hard to pass on for something that can get the job done

Taylor made iron for a high handicap?
grandaddy510 replied to Mike H's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
71+25 = 96. He said about a 25. Depending on course par and rating, shooting a 95, would he not be close to a 25 handicap? give or take a stroke or is both his and my math wrong? Anyways I've just came down from 22 to a 15 the last couple months and I was gaming Taylormade R7 when I was in the low to mid 90's. They were very nice clubs but to me did not give me much feedback. Now that I am improving I was looking for something with a little better feel, feedback, and slightly smaller head, while still forgiving. The 710 AP1 did just that and I honestly can say these are very easy clubs to hit high and land soft even with slightly stronger loft. I think it would be a good club for the 80's and 90s shooter alike I wish I would have gotten them sooner. So coming from someone with similar experience, you can't go wrong with Taylormade, I've read good things about the new Burners, but don't be afraid to try out the AP1s just because they have the Titleist name, they are very easy to hit. -
If you are considering a blade style of Scotty and Nike, I would recommend you test out a Rife Antigua or Aruba as well if they have one at your local shop. I just switched from a Studio Style Newport, which I loved but did not really fit me, to a Cayman Brac. This is basically the same as the Antigua/Aruba which look closer to the classic Ping blade that Scotty and Nike use. For 1/3 the price at TGW of a Scotty it was well worth it. When I rolled it at the shop it didn't have the pop off the face as the Scotty (with insert), but man does it roll the ball nice, I've never rolled it better. This is due to the grooves, but the with a light grip, slow smooth and low stroke through the ball, I have complete feel and control of that of a $300 putter. I can honestly say it's the best $100 I've spent in my bag yet. Of course like you said, everyones feel is different but it could save you $100-200

Traditional Lofts versus Modern Lofts
grandaddy510 replied to TourSpoon's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I've strongly been considering adjusting the lofts on a few of my clubs as well. I just switched to the AP1 and the stock is PW45 and GW50. My old set was PW47 and i was using 52 and 56 W. It was easy to take a little off the PW so i never bothered getting the gap correct. Since the AP1s came with the GW50 I am thinking of bending to GW49, then the vokeys 52>53, and 56>57. This would make an even 4* gap from 29-57. And now after seeing some of this info, I am even considering bending the 4(23>22) and 5(26>25) as I play my longer iron gaps as (carry) 7(33)-145, 6(29)-155, 5(26)-163, 4(23)-171. It would make more sense especially with an easy 3H 19 at 185, cranked up 195 it will fill the gap better. Now my question is I have already had these adjusted for lie angle. Are we suppose to adjust lofts at the same time as lie or can we still bend 1 degree loft after already bending 2 degree flat? I would not want to risk the integrity of the iron since the AP1 and Vokey are both casted. Also what effect would changing the 56 to 57 have on the bounce? I am assuming for every degree weak would expose 1 more degree of bounce, please correct me if my math is wrong. Thanks -
Do you happen to practice on mat? my local range has mats and for some reason the last month my right wrist feels strained/sprained. i was thinking maybe its the shock from no give/divot in the mat. i can really feel it when i rotate my wrist like in impact to release position. it might have been triggered by a bad grip that i noticed i fell into. i think i should shut it down for a month and just putt.

i just picked up the book from amazon. haven't got out on the course yet but i've went to the range 3 times since i've gotten it working on the flat wrist and aiming point. it has really helped my chipping and pitching a ton. it really gets you turning thru the ball and getting your weight shifting forward. haven't really worked on the full swing much other than dynamic 1-2, i'm still trying to get the feeling of the loading early in the back swing. naturally i load closer to the top it feels a little awkward so i'm planning to work on that this week.

Playing rounds with x-outs, refurb, and practice balls
grandaddy510 replied to 01somta's topic in Golf Talk
i've bought a 100 box of nike one blacks that were stamped practice on them from ebay for like .80c /ball shipped. they felt and performed just like store bought ones i've used before, couldn't tell the difference. also just picked up some AAAAA rated titleists nxt for .65c /ball shipped, a few with logos but most look brand new, a few with a tiny scuff, one hit wonders. these are for casual rounds, skins with the 4 some ect. no problems. never tried refurbished ones, see them all the time especially pro-v's never trusted them tho. -
slightly open to play about a 5-10yrd draw ball flight. if its square i usually pull hook it. i think slightly open also consciously helps me release my hands right of the target line/swing in out

i've been fighting the shanks the last few weeks and i think i've figured out the problem. it seems that my shoulder rotation started getting too flat, and then starting the downswing with my shoulders out racing my hips and coming over the top for the shank, or for the high on the club face inside. now im rotating more around my spine with left shoulder pointing down, and firing my hips on the downswing, almost feeling exaggerated so theres no way the club can come over the top. this has resulted in better ball striking than i ever have had. no more shanks and the joy of seeing the ball mark back on the the sweet spot

i've been working on getting that sensation of a bowed left wrist but it probably is closer to flat, just slightly bowed. i used to have more of a cupped wrist and would slice alot. now i have the feeling of bowed the left wrist, i have gained about 15 yards per club and the ball has more spin and goes higher and lands softer. also cut 5 strokes off my score just from that adjustment of the wrist

Best Courses in Las Vegas
grandaddy510 replied to SVTGolfer's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I'm heading out there next month. Has anyone here played Tuscany or Painted Desert? We have t-times already booked for sat and sun, and the friday round is at angel park mountain. i have played the palm course which was really nice. I have also played aliante which was a pretty boring track imo. also legacy which was really nice. any opinions on Tuscany or Painted Desert. Also has anyone played Silverstone, look really nice. Hopefully we get to that one next year as well as badlands, and maybe rio secco or bali hai if we win big -
With many brands making adjustable hosel or weight configured woods now, from TM, Nike, Callaway, ect. many tour pro's have these in their bags now. Do you believe most of these tour pro's are gaming these on neutral settings? I would think that most, if not all, would be able to work the ball left or right without the need to have a draw/fade bias on their club. IMHO I believe these adjustable hosel/weight technology woods are a gimmick and are actually cheating the average player from learning how to swing on the correct plane. I think many amateurs are using these as a "quick fix" to straighten out their ball flight, mainly slicers looking for a draw bias. I love the feel of my R9 fairway wood but I have never moved it from neutral setting. I was debating with someone about this and they believed many tour pros are using this technology to prevent "missing to one side". They also commented that if it was a gimmick, then why would they have it in their bag, which I thought was pretty funny. I believe many tour pro's are using this new technology because they are getting payed to game it and most are using it in neutral settings. I have seen a few of the pro's featured in the "whats in the bag" section of golf digest who are playing these have them on neutral settings, but this is only a small percentage featured that are playing with this technology. What are your thoughts or opinions on this?

Sure, you've had a birdie, eagle, or maybe even an albatross but...
grandaddy510 replied to bong_crosby's topic in Golf Talk
when i first started, i hit a worm burner with the driver and there was a few geese about 20 yards away, hit one square in the neck and flipped em head over heals. you can tell he was struggling to breath, the others kinda jumped out of the way when he got hit, but went back to check him out and knew he was a gonner and started walking away. we came back by 3 holes later because it passes the tees on the way to the green and he was indeed done. i felt bad but at the same time, thats the risk you take living on the golf course. -
General advice on shot shape and swing
grandaddy510 replied to binga7's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
i have the same problem, couldnt hit right to left if my life depended on it. i found out i was taking it too inside and coming over the top. well now i've been working on my swing, its more upright now and i take the club head down the line, slightly bow my left wrist (used to be cupped), and the feeling of staying connected with my arms against my chest on the down swing naturally goes in to out for the most part. still working on it though i can get it to go pretty straight but still learning how to control the distance of the draw and not hook it -
Do you wear a glove when playing golf?
grandaddy510 replied to Zeph's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I tried wearing one when I was just starting out on everything but wedge and putter. I ditched the glove and have never bought one since (only been playing for about 2yrs). It kind of got a little irritating taking it off between shots, and I didn't like leaving it on most of the time and getting sweaty. I get more feel of the club without one. I play the Winn PCi-TL so the grip wears a little fast. I'm planning to switch to the Golf Pride New Decade Multi-compound. I love the feel of the full corded grip on my putter, hopefully they don't feel like sandpaper when taking a full swing with no glove lol -
How long do you keep your irons?

I Couldn't help but notice that you're from the Bay Area and have a similar set up. I love my r7's but they're not TP.
