I played Monday and in an attempt to keep my ball in the fairway Off the tee for once this season I opened my driver club face a little and used an open stance to play my "fade" and it worked. In the fairway all day and had my best score of the year. My shots generally though were too high and looping and I lost a lot of distance. If I have to play that shot in the wind I'm done. Needless to say I don't have a good handle on my driver yet. I am playing with a minimalist 8 club bag which I love but I have been limping around all week ever since this last round. The muscles on my right leg are all jacked up. (swinging lefty) Thigh and groin. Very painful at times. My big event is coming up in a few weeks and it hasn't eased up at all this week. Didn't stop me from hitting some balls at the range this morning though and discovered I can hit a 4 wood pretty long and straight with a square alignment and little pain. Im thinking of ditching the driver for now and use the 4 wood off the tee and have another option off the deck. Any advice on that please share. But I was wondering if anyone else hurt their thigh/groin muscles changing their setup to hit a draw or fade? And how long did it take to recover?

That's wonderful to hear. My cousin also has stage 4 cancer but he had a liver resection early on that kept him cancer free for 4 years before it returned. He is starting his 11th year since diagnosed. I called him not too long ago and he was told recently the same thing as me, stivarga then clinical trials if that doesn't work. I sure caught up with him fast. I was wondering where you were treated? Maybe our doctors missed a class. :-)

What was the lowest score? -
I played my first 9 holes with a smaller bag on monday (8 clubs but used only 7) and i played better and scored better and really enjoyed the experience. I found out today that a good friend of mine has been playing with 8 clubs for about a year. i found this website today http://thewalkinggolfer.com/minimalist_golfer.html only 5 here out of 120 votes (4%) who took the poll play with less than 12 clubs. i think im hooked on the idea and plan to play with 8 clubs the rest of the year. any other golf minimalists have any tips or comments about playing this way?

there it is for me too.

i practice with my 4 iron but dont play with it. i think its a good idea to practice with your 3 iron if you arent consistent with it like I am with my 4.
-
yeah, he was playing well and in the running for rookie of the year too. they have some depth in the infield this year but yeah, big loss for the buccos. hope they can hold off the cubs. catching the cards now doesnt look promising.

i put my set together this year adding to my bag for the first time a hybrid, a big headed driver, and graphite shafts in my irons.. they all have made a huge difference.

Had my best 9 of the year. 8 over 43. 3 pars, 4 bogey, 2 doubles. Loved playing with a limited bag, 8 clubs.

Yeah!! Had my best 9 of the year, 8 over 43. From the back tees, 70.0 rating, slope 123. I finally tamed my driver. I played my fade, open face, open stance and stayed out of trouble. No obs, no hazards. Finished with the ball I started with. Putter came around to for me. Played with 8 clubs, only used 7. I think playing with fewer clubs helped. Less decision making, less wrong club selections. Started out slow but came on and played the last 5 holes 2 over. Came in second out of seven guys. The winner was 4 over. He only played with 5 clubs. -
What causes the 90 degree shank on a chip?
Sante TwoGloves replied to DocWu1948's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I was shanking terribly one practice day until i realized i wasnt even looking at the ball when i was chipping. focus on the back of the ball and dont look up to quick to see your shot. -
I enjoy playing that way now. I think it does give me some advantage coming off the tee and if I get a tough lie where hitting from one side of the ball is better than the other. I don't know if it's legal but I used to play one nine one way then switch bags at the turn. I did make a thread about it when I first joined. I think the best response imo then was from someone who said that most players could get by with 12 clubs and add two off handed clubs like a long iron and a wedge.

range balls vs real balls experiment results
Sante TwoGloves replied to Gilberg's topic in Golf Talk
Someone gave me some old balls that were at least 20 years old from the looks of them. Of course, You know me, I hit them into the range without asking the owner if that was ok to do. But that's another thread and time. :-) Anyway, I have to say I was surprised by the distances I was getting with them. Not much shorter from the regular range balls I hit there. But then again the range balls there are beat up too. -
Try both a 4 iron and 4ihybrid and see which one works best for what you are trying to accomplish. That's what I did and I ended up playing the hybrid. I practice with them both though. If one of them doesnt do it for you try the 3 iron and 3 hybrid.

when i started this year i was recovering from a left shoulder injury and was having trouble with my driver. pain and restriction in my range of motion. i have a history of hitting the ball fairly decent from both sides. when i was younger i had two bags.I would play one round left handed and the next right handed depending on how the course fit my game. and would score about the same, mid 40s. this year because of the shoulder i started playing my long clubs left handed. so i ended up with a mixed bag. woods left, irons right. my putting sucked so i tried putting left handed and it seemed more natural. Im right eye dominant and i read right eye dominant golfers may have an advantage putting left handed. not sure if that is true but i tried it and liked it. since the chipping stroke is virtually the same as the putting stroke for most players i started carrying a left handed pitching wedge to be more consistent. i was playing all left handed for about a minute this year until i found a set of right handed irons that seem perfect for me. the difference is they are graphite shafts. my left handed irons are steel. so i am bouncing back and forth during a round and i wear two gloves just to made it easier. it is working out because some chemos have affected my hands and the gloves give me added protection and cushion plus with my red gloves i feel like spiderman when im playing. lol

"The Inner Game of Golf" by Timothy Gallwey
Sante TwoGloves replied to iacas's topic in Reading Room
i like his idea about putting your conscious mind to work so that you can hit the ball subconsciously. i used his back-hit or 1-2-3 technique for many years and i thought it was very effective. i started out this year doing the same thing but abandoned it early on. i pretty much grip it and rip it now and my swing seems more fluid.i think i was tensing up more looking for that impact point. i still use some of the putting stuff mainly looking for a small blade of grass in the cup. aim small and your misses will be small. -
i got my set of irons at a goodwill for $12 and they are the best irons i've ever had. long and straight. yard sales, play it again sports, local pro shops, thrift stores, ebay. you can get some really good clubs these days for a fraction of what they sold for new. my whole 14 club set cost me around $70 this year.

thank you very much. the 5 year survival rate for what i have is only 8 % to 15 % so I definitely got an uphill battle but yes, golfing has been a blessing this year. i spend my free time now posting here, hunting for clubs, playing with friends, at the range, watching golf videos, etc. I'm pretty much back to where i was 30 years ago, totally obsessed. lol sure beats dwelling on the potential fatal side affects of the drugs im on, and how successful they are or aren't, and all that jazz.

did you know that back in the early thirties there was no limit to the number of clubs you could carry. guys were winning tournaments in the same year with at many as 31 clubs (7 wedges) and as little as 7 clubs. many players were on the low side carrying 8. i forgot the year, i think 36 or 37 is when they decided on the 14 club limit.

Sorry for your loss. July 2013 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that spread to my liver. I'm on the last chemo (stivarga) they have left to try before i'm headed to clinical trials. changed my diet completely recently and added juicing and supplements along with the chemo hoping it stops the "little bastard" inside. this is why i started golfing again this year to try and get more active. golf is a great motivator. before this chemo i had more energy and was doing yoga, exercising, and golf drills every other morning. not because of the cancer but because i wanted to improve my game. :) i have been playing 9 holes every other monday because the other mondays i was in the chemo lab. something to look forward to. i take my meds by mouth right now but i still play every other monday. last monday i was very weak and couldnt have played if i wanted to. (weakness is one of the side affects of stivarga. so is hand and foot syndrome.) so far the side affects have been minor but if my hands get crappy I got my gloves to get me through. there be a method to my madness. :) i am really looking forward to my big event oct 11th. friends from as far as Wisconsin are coming to play in the "First Annual Sante Two Gloves Memorial Golf Invitational." For all the grammar police First annual is acceptable instead of inaugural because it is done tongue in cheek and you cant be more tongue in cheek then when a memorial event is hosted by the one it is honoring. haha according to the Chicago Manual of Style anyway. i still manage to get some range time but only about 20 balls at a time. full buckets knock me done for a few days now. I actually think i am focusing better with only a half a bucket Cancer blows but it can be reversed. I like this book "Never fear cancer again." lot of good stuff in it for those who want to change your diet also. The first chapter is a little unnerving. The author thinks chemo will only kill you. I disagree. my alternative medicine guy is a pharmacist who says do both. i'm going with that idea for now. I have in my signature "Enjoy every sand wedge." I found a clip on youtube when Warren Zevon (Werewolves of London, Excitable Boy, lawyers, guns and money) dying of lung cancer made his last appearance on Dave Letterman. Dave asked him now that you have a terminal illness what do you know that we don't. Zevon replied, You have to remember to Enjoy every sandwich. See what I did there. :)

i was watching a show on the golf channel a month or so ago. a show where a different pro plays a few holes with the host and that is exactly what she says she does. her caddie calls out the shot on her backswing, high fade, low draw, etc and she hits the shot he calls. forgot the name of the lady pro. sorry. -

im going to go out on a limb and predict that i will break 45 this monday for the first time all year. playing only 8 clubs for the first time. i think its going to make a big improvement to my score. of course it could go the other way. haha -
that seems to be the going rate at the play it again sports i go too. they have 4 sets currently all at $110. One cooper set at $235.
