  1. Played 9 holes last night at The Creek at Qualchan Thursday night league. It was Best Net 3 balls and our team did not do very well. I played well and shot a 1 over par 37 with 2 bogeys and 1 birdie. GIR 7/9, Putts 17. Both bogeys were the 3 putt variety. I had a good up and down on #8. Hit my drive into a bush in the left side. Hit a 9 iron backwards with my back turned to the target and was able to pitch back out into the fairway. I had 107 to the pin and hit a SW to within 10 feet and made the putt. On #9 I had to get up and down from off the green and made another 10 footer for par. All the pitching practice is helping a lot. The birdie I had was on a par 5 where I had 40 yards to the pin. Hit the pitch to 8 feet and made the putt.
  2. July 6: Playing 9 holes in our Thursday night league. Posting now because I won't get home until late.
  3. Notah Begay is an on course reporter? who knew.
  4. Went to the club to pick up my clubs and spent 10 minutes on short pitches and 10 minutes pitching over a sand trap to a green. Success was measure by hitting the green anywhere... still put 3/15 in the trap.
  5. In Junior High we used to be impressed by how far someone hit a 7 iron or 5 iron... I guess all of us still are impressed by driver distance. Personally, and I think everyone has a different approach to game management, I have a low range for a club and a high range then things change based on elevation changes, lie, pin placement, wind, magnetic north, earth rotation and so on. I can step on a pitching wedge and get it up to 130 or hit a smooth 120. Which one I try to hit depends on the situation. I don't think it matters a lot if someone is hitting an 8 iron from 180 or a 6 iron... it's still 180 yards. I like the idea of having a range I hit the ball... of course I'm assuming a good ball strike every time.
  6. Hit 50 pitches and chips in the backyard before heading out to the lake for the 4th. Happy 4th of July!
  7. Watched YouTube video's on Key #4 and #5. worked on the Impact Snap swing trainer for 10 minutes. Hit 50 pitches in my back yard... working on rotating hips and not swinging the handle... also using the bounce and not the leading edge.
  8. Played 18 holes today and then worked on pitching over a bunker for about an hour. Yes, during the round I dumped one in a bunker.., then took 2 to get out. Worked on the pitching technique discussed on TST pitching thread and got a good feel for it. Worked on turning and using the bounce.
  9. Spent 15 minutes working on pitch shots in my back yard. Watched videos last night from TST and Stan Utley. Tried to pivot and end up on my left side. Some shots went straight right.... working on it. My first attempt at 5 munutes per day. ?
  10. Last night, Thursday night league at The Creek at Qualchan. The format was a Shamble where 1 person tee's off and everyone plays from that spot. I play on a team with 3 players who's handicaps range from 20 to 30 so I was in for a long night. I teed off on 3 holes and was in the fairway on all three from 120 to 90 yards out. I was in a surly mood from the beginning because I had to rush out of work and race across town to get to the course. It seems every North South Corridor is under construction right now and it took me 40 minutes and I arrived just in time for our tee time. No warm up, no practice putts and they wanted me to tee off on the first hole. I forgot the battery to my cart and couldn't find my range finder in my bag. So I was a hot mess. The first hole is a tricky one with a 90 degree dogleg and a sand trap at the right corner and woods if you drive it through the fairway. I typically hit a 3 wood off the tee and laced one just to the left of the sand trap 120 yards out. Went on to double bogey the first 3 holes. Settled down later and had pars on 4 holes in a row. then ended with a bogey after hitting into a hazard on a Par-5.
  11. Right now I'm too busy learning martial arts by waxing cars and painting fences to start a new project... Maybe over the winter I'll try Tathata. I've been seeing their commercials for over a year and I will say they're very high quality and make me want to try it. High end infomercial material. Is that like "there is no spoon"?
  12. I forgot to mention... it was the Connecticut state track championship in the 100 and 200 meter dash.
  13. I voted yes, maybe in the future because our definition of females are changing. Case in point a transgender female without hormones or sex reassignment surgery won the girls state championship as a freshman. "Her" time would have come in last place among the boys but "she" was allowed to compete against the girls. Times are a changing. I've played some basketball back in the day but was not good enough to make my high school basketball team.. or junior high school for that matter. I peaked in grade school. I was hanging out at a gym one day and there were some female college basketball players hanging around. We started to play pick up games and I was guarding a college center for UNLV who could not get a shot off against me... I blocked everything she put up and it wasn't even close. It was like me playing against one of my kids.
  14. Another conventional wisdom myth slain by TST...
  15. Unfortunately yes... It was framed as a question not a statement. Sorry if my ignorance is showing. I will try to keep it tucked in. I've only played on Bermuda greens a couple times but I do remember you have to really pay attention to the grain more than on bent grass greens.
  16. I love gadgets so I would never consider having them a "sell out".... that said, I bought myself a Cart-Tech 1500Li over the winter. I powered push cart with lithium battery and a remote control. My wife thinks its very pretentious and is embarrassed to be seen with me. Everyone else thinks its cool... at least that's what they say. It feels great to be walking casually down the fairway with my cart 10 yards in front of me or being on the green and moving my cart to the next tee box. If that is what being a sell out feels like... I'm in. Also, I was an early adopter to hybrids... in fact my first "hybrid" was actually an orange, Taylor Made 7 wood with the bubble shaft. I have to admit I felt a little queasy putting that in the bag and was happy to replace it with a 4H. I haven't had higher than a 5 iron in my bag ever since and would never go back.
  17. actually... double hit chips would be worse... and that's my nemesis.
  18. Could he be talking about the line and grain on Bermuda grass... definitely have to take the grain into consideration. Do you figure out the line and then take the grain into consideration? I hardly ever play on Bermuda greens... I would love to take an Aim Point class but there isn't one in my area that I know of. Always looking to get better at reading greens.
  19. I have a bushnell v3 and love it. I never got the hang of the GPS rangefinder and prefer the Laser. It's a part of my normal pre-shot routine.
  20. We were at Hunter Liggett and the scenery was great but it was hot. Record temperatures for this time of year in the 100-110 range. Our tents were 125 degrees + during the day. Some of our training had to be curtailed due the heat. We're a CSH and put up our hospital in Cat 5 heat over 3 days. After that we had air conditioning but it had a hard time keeping up. No heat injuries until the final day when the commander wanted to do a final formation at 1430 and hand out awards...
  21. I got a cart tech 1200Li for Christmas and it's awesome! Cheers.
  22. I'm at an Army excercise in central CA so my wife sent me pictures of a book my son drew for me... this is one of the pics. It says "my dad is smart because he knows how to golf".
  23. Thursday night 9 hole league at the Creek at Qualchan. I felt pretty good in spite of having to rush across town and my warmest consisted of 6 Putts. I ended up shooting 3 over par 39 but my iron shots were not very crisp. FIR: 5/7. GIR 5/9, Putts 16. I had a good night chipping and pitching and had a sand save on a Par 3. I was 1 over par going into the last 2 holes and made bogeys from 150 and 95 yards in the middle of the fairway. both were due to bad club selection and severe under clubbing. Now, when I'm rounding into midseason form it's off to Fort Hunter-Liggett for 2 weeks of Army Reserve Training.
  24. Great to read this as this is one of my favorite all time courses. I lived in Concord Township for a few years and worked in Mentor so Fowler's Mill was my home course. I would play in the late evenings there and one time actually got locked in the Parking lot... they closed and pad locked the gait!. I had to take apart part of the fence and drive over the grass to get out of the parking lot. I love the set up but my favorite hole was probably the 3rd which wraps around a small lake. Its a dog-leg right with the lake on the entire right side. If you were a bomber you could hit straight across over the lake to the green but its a very long carry... 250 or 260? So you chose how much of the dogleg you want to cut off and then your second shot is also over water to a peninsula green. Great hole with a lot of challenges and two shots you have to carry over water. So peaceful on that hole also... a lot of water fowl and wildlife on the course and no houses except in the distance along 1 hole. Not sure if it's still like that since I was last there in 2004. I often try to find excuses to go back to NE Ohio just so I can play Fowler's Mill... and go to Cedar Point!
