the more I practice the luckier I get

250 off the tee is not short for an amatuer. It may seem that way with people claiming they "average 290" or something like that when they actually hit 1 out 0f 10 290 yards and the rest 220 yards into the trees. Your kind of distance is plenty as long as you're not hitting it into the woods or something. Won't make the PGA tour but you could definitely be a 3 or 4 handicap with that distance. Peopl elove to talk about how far they hit a certain club as if that is a value of how skilled they are at golf. Distance helps (quite a bit) but don't listen to all the nonsense. I find that people who talk a lot about how far they hit a certain club do that because nobody wants to hear a story about their triple bogey.
-
Does that rule go for the US Amatuer as well? I've always wanted to play in the qualifier to either one if I can ever get my handicap that low. What're the qualifications for the US Am, same as the Open plus amatuer status?

I wouldn't worry too much about whatever tournaments you're playing in. Just see what happens. Just work on hitting fairways and getting your second shot as close as you can then go from there. 150 yard drive is tough, 150 yard drive in the woods is tougher. At your age you'll be hitting the ball 10-15 yards further next year and you'll have all new strengths and weaknesses to worry about so for now just keep it in the short grass. Hit the gym and eat some red meat if you want don't go nuts though. Time on the range and practice green will be better spent at your age. My game at 14 is nothing liek my game at 16 I probably dropped 10 handicapr strokes in that time.

Why does the USPGA feel the need to try to limit players scoring
bogeymike replied to jfrain2004's topic in Golf Talk
exactly, I can watch myself make bogeys and hit crap shots in the rough. It seems to be more of a problem in the majors for some reason. Probably because they receive more attention and are compared more often to what someone in the 60's did. In my opinion golf cannot be compared over generations except some intangible things like swings and palying style and what not. The new equipment and modern affordability of golf has really made it a different game than it was 50 years ago. Let's see some birds this weekend! -

The biggest issue I have is how the us open course are becoming. For whatever reason the USGA really wants pro golfers to look bad on the course. These guys are so good the only way to do that is make the course back breakingly difficult or even unfair. Greens like concrete and rough that is a .5 stroke penalty is not interesting to watch to me. Some people like to watch the pros look like hackers but not me. I want to see birdies! You can see people win because they made the least amount of bogies at any course on a saturday, I want to see people win because they made the most birdies. -
He always seems to give little kids golf balls and tees and stuff so that's awesome to see. Watching "playing Lessons from the pros" with him last night was very interesting. He seems very realistic about how he plays golf.

Jon Daly might be able to play pro golf hungover but I can't really do anything except be miserable

by far my favorite player on tour. He has no luck

This is the last post I'm writing in this thread because this is rude and uncalled for. Yes I joined because of their policies. Other clubs in my area are extremely discriminatory towards women and it was important that that was not the case for my family. I do not appreciate the way you said that. You can doubt whatever you want but that's an absurd thing to say, you have no idea what I look for in a club or anything else. When you write a giant check to join somewhere everything comes into play in your decision and things like how women and racial minorities are treated is important to some people, particularly if you have a wife or daughter who wants to play golf or if I want to invite a black friend of mine to play without disapproving getting stares from other members. If you still don't understand you definitely have not been to very many private clubs. I wash my hands of this weirdness. I'm not even going to bother looking at this thread again as I've already wasted enough time with it.

man you guys hate her! Lol, I really don't care I try to tune out most sports announcers. As long as it's not johnny miller, andy north or joe buck(thank god he doesn't do golf) I'm ok with it.

Irons and steel shafts seem to last forever. I've never seen a iron face get a dent or scratch from another club. Same goes for steel shafts. Woods need covers since the graphite shaft can get nicked and the heads (even titanium) are thin enough to dent and scratch the paint/finish

That's awesome, I wish I'd seen it.

Private clubs can do what they want. I joined my club because they had a reasonable policy towards everyone. That said I think it's ridiculous that the PGA glorifies augusta by having even a tournament let alone a major there. Augusta can do what they want but I don't think the PGA should be condoning their policies. I may be in the minority but I think it's ridiculous that in 2009 nonsense like this is tolerated by the PGA. They've worked hard to make golf more of a sport for the masses and this does not help. I'm sure there are other clubs with gender/racially discriminatory policies but this is the one that gets the attention. I know the masters is a "tradition" but seriously Augusta makes golfers look like a bunch of elitists.

Maybe a little but nothing like the NBA

south and central florida. I love it there!!!

I think the biggest thing that's helped me is the new balls. They really go compared to golf balls from 20 years ago. New clubs are more forgiving but the shots that really kill beginners and high handicappers are shanks, balls in the woods, chips over the green etc and there's no current club that can really help that.
-
As tin cup said "make more birdies"
-
a new steel shaft retails for about $5-12 depending on what you get. The grip will be about $3-14 depending on what you get so most of the cost is in labor. Graphite shaft will be a bit more expensive but not a ton.
-
the new equipment has really changed golf. The thing I notice about "buying strokes" is that so many beginning golfers will pay $400 for the newest driver but they don't spend anything on lessons. People I know who buy new drivers and whatnot seem to hit the ball much farther into the woods than they used to. Sometimes I see them hit great drives and second shots but they chip over the green three times and then three putt so I think you're right that the focus has changed to improving the long game. I think the key to beginners improving is to find a club (3 wood etc) that they can hit the fairway with and then work on their chipping. That's an interesting fact you noted that the average score really hasn't changed over the years. I was wondering about that but never really knew.

yep good to see

I wouldn't call anyone who made the PGA tour an underacheiver. I never though much of leadbetter. I really feel like his videos and show are snake oil.
