Shaft Options for my new Mizuno MP-57s
SuaSponteMn replied to Shindig's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yup, you're pretty much stating the opposite of what 99% of the players that have hit both shafts would say about the feel, including myself. Although you are accurate on the flex, 5.5 is typically thought of to be the equivalent of a DGS300, 6.0 is stiffer, almost an x-stiff. -
Titleist vs. Mizuno vs. Ping irons
SuaSponteMn replied to wardamneagle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Everryone is biased towards there own equipment and that's cool. Lots of people reside in your camp on the Eye 2's, lots of people also think Ping makes the single most ugly iron on the face of the Earth. Typically great products cause this type of reaction. I reside in the hate-em camp, but I almost bought a used set for 195.00 just have them sent back to be retumbled and stashed away as a collectors item. That being said, why would you want a club that provides you with no feedback on poorly struck shots? Your swing could go in the tank and you'd not know it until the wheels have completely fallen off. -
Titleist vs. Mizuno vs. Ping irons
SuaSponteMn replied to wardamneagle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
That's bag chatter alright! I have to disagree on the character opinion, but I consider covers to be golf's equivelent to a pocket protector. I run a towel in between the shafts, seems to work alright in all but the most extreme conditions. -
Titleist vs. Mizuno vs. Ping irons
SuaSponteMn replied to wardamneagle's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'd say the forgiveness factor on those 3 sets of irons is almost identical. If you were to go on feel, it would go: Harshest = Ping: It's cast, but also bullet proof when it comes to bag chatter. They will look brand new in 5 years Middle Ground = Titleist: Forged, but will be a tad 'clickier' at impact than some other forged clubs. The will take some abuse in the bag Softest = Mizuno: Forgred from carbon steel, feels like you're striking a marshmellow. Beware, I've had mine for less than a season and they already show bag chatter. -
I hit both while getting fit. I got decent results with the V2 from a spin and distance perspective, but the VS felt like it had a ton more life in it and my numbers were ideal. To me the UST ProForce line has always felt boardy and lifeless, this shaft improves a bit, but not enough for me. I've got a pured VS Proto 70g in Stiff flex installed in a TM Superquad 9.5* head. I've literally tried to knock it out of the bag and can't. You can ask some people around here about my club buying habits, I REALLY tried.

TaylorMade REAX vs Competition
SuaSponteMn replied to r7 425's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
This is a very "player-specific" question. My suggestion would be to get on the launch monitor and see what your numbers are with the stock shaft. If the launch angle matches ball speed, spin rates, and the resulting shot goes where you'd like it to, I'd say your set. All that being said, the Taylormade Non-TP REAX is does not have Fujikura's Rombax throughout the entire shaft, but a potion of the shaft does have that double woven strand technology. I had a REAX in my superquad before I swapped it for a VS Proto 70g. In my opinion it's a lesser shaft from a technology perspective, but if it matches your swing, who cares about technology? -
There is a very good review of the Lt2 iron on this website, you can find it here: http://thesandtrap.com/equipment/clu...t_irons_review IMO the Lt2 is one of the very best irons Taylormade has ever made if not THE best; and it's heads and shoulders above the R7TP. The R7TP has a lighter clubhead and less forgiveness, while at the same time it offers no more workability than the Lt2 which has a heavier, more solid feel. The look from address is almost indentical, while the overall look goes to the Lt2. The black and gold crap on the back of the R7TP's is uneccesary and downright ugly in comparison to the simple look of the Lt2. The only reason the Lt2's are not in the bag is because I'm enjoying the Mizuno forged feel. But I will never sell the Lt2's, every time I sit them behind the ball, they just look perfect.

Welcome to the Sand Trap!

Love the B330-S! Little bit firmer off the putter, but it's longer off the tee, more stable in the wind, and spins every bit as much around the greens as a ProV1. :)

Front heel at the top of the swing...
SuaSponteMn replied to SuaSponteMn's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Interesting response, seems like there's more than one camp on this topic. I asked this question elsewhere too, here's a response I got from a well-respected teaching professional in Texas: -
I've been working on some changes with my pro this winter, one of the issues I had last season was not getting to my left side at the top (I'm left-handed), and then having overly quick hips that got me stuck inside coming back down. One of the drills he gave me to get over to the left was to setup next to my couch and try to get my hip over to it on the way back, and then to try to keep it there as I come down as an exaggeration. This has helped a ton, I've gotten much closer to on plane and much steeper which was another goal because I was WAY too flat which caused me to bottom out before the ball at times. So... After conducting this couch drill about 47 thousand times , I noticed that my right heel is now lifting at the top of my backswing, not much, about half an inch at the most. My head is staying on the ball, it's not dipping, and my club is exactly where I want it at the top (so maybe this is a dumb question), but is it fundamentally unsound to have that heel lift?

My Momentus Swing Trainer Experience
SuaSponteMn replied to sonicblue's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Do you work for Momentus? -
Was going through one putter every two years, pretty much all Scotty's... Neport Oilcan Futura Studio Stainless Then I happened across Tom Slighter, and honestly, everything else made is now a distant second place. I won't ever buy another putter from anyone else, and this one's got the potential to be in the bag for several years. Thanks! -Mike

My Momentus Swing Trainer Experience
SuaSponteMn replied to sonicblue's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I have one, and for the most part I think it works great. What I would caution though is that whatever motion you make with this device WILL be ingrained in your muscle memory. For me intially, that was a really inside to out move and a hip sway, without a lot of extension (fear of hitting the ceiling LoL) which equated to a case of the snappers. Now that I've been able to indentify those flaws though (with good instruction), the Momentus has been extremely helpful in correcting them. I guess what I would suggest is the use of a mirror along with this training aid. -
Ok, sorry to dig this out of the archives, but I missed your response. First off, while the Burner TP wasn't the right club for me, it was for a TON of people, and is widely considered to be the best Talyormade driver since the 510TP. At it's original price of 399.99, it's the same price as a non-TP version of the Superquad. So while defning something as overpriced is subjective, I'm confused with your logic. The TP version of the burner comes with two shaft options, one in 50g and another in 65g, both with 45", not 46" shafts. Again, please get your facts straight before posting as people will listen to someone with a single digit handicap.
-
Dude... You're not serious about the Burner being for a hack right? Given the choice between the two, most Taylormade staff players lean towards the Burner TP, versus the SQ. And that's not me being bias, because I didn't get along well with the Burner, I actually own a SQ myself. I'm just sayin get your facts straight before you throw something like out there.

What is the Life Cycle of your golf quipment?
SuaSponteMn replied to gotgolf?'s topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
D2 got benched for a SuperQuad, which is in the process of being dethroned by a G10. Lt2's are out in favor of MP57's 904f is gone, replaced by a Sonartec Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport 2 dumped for a Custom Slighter Tacoma The only items that have stood any test of time are my Cleveland Halo's, even my Vokey's rotate with a set of 588's It truly is a sickness... -
I'm not saying this interchangeable shaft stuff is a bad idea... BUT I will probably invest in a football helmet because there are going to be driver heads flying all over the place on the golf course this year.
-
This logic might have made sense even 5 years ago, but it's silly now. With the MOI movement in full swing, drivers are now more forgiving than 3 woods. An instructor putting a number on when you should or shouldn't hit a driver is also silly. Did he give any thought as to why your handicap is where it is? I mean if you can't putt, but you can hit driver well, then you're limiting yourself to longer approach shots that will typically land farther away from the hole; limiting your ability to make the putt and ultimately, improve. People need to start realizing that the driver isn't the club it used to be. My wife is a very recreational golfer, plays maybe 5-10 times a year, but she LOVES her driver and hits it fairly well. I can promise you she isn't a single digit handcapper.
-
How much do you want to spend? Scratch Golf makes the best wedges in golf; they are forged (unlike Cleveland and Vokey) and completely custom. You can have whatever finish, bounce, lie, length, grind, shaft, stamping, your heart desires. Like I said, you'll pay a little more but they'll treat you like a tour pro. (Wish I could afford them )

Honestly, you missed most of the good ones. Bettinardi is the best on that list but there are better ones: Tom Slighter C&L; TP Mills Byron There's a few that are all better than what's on the list IMO

Driver: could you play without one?
SuaSponteMn replied to RichF's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
5 years ago, I would have said yes; today I'm not so sure. Drivers off the tee are probably more forgiving than the 3w, higher MOI and larger clubface. That being said, I still find myself hitting 3w off the tee if I'm worried about getting into trouble, I also find myself hitting that 3w directly into the trouble I was worried about . Now I can hit my hybrids right down the center, pretty much every time. So I've contradicted myself So yeah, I guess you don't really need one, but I wouldn't play without one. -
