  1. He made it on the number. Fine, let’s call it average. He’s still a freakish talent, but my guess is that with his broken down body, his odds of making a cut or winning a tournament are no better than an average golfer on the pga tour. IMO, they should be a lot lower than the top golfers today (Rahm, Rory, etc.), thus he doesn’t scare the ‘em. Of course, impossible to really know because he’ll never play a full schedule again.
  2. Eh. These guys can joke around and still play incredible golf. Tiger won over 80 times because he was the best golfer in the field by far, not because he never joked around. He's not scaring them because he's a below-average pro now. Simple as that. I'm all for him having some fun - he is playing with house money!
  3. I thought tampon thing was funny. Social media/press reaction was 100% predictable. My take is that he knew it was dumb to do in public, but just doesn't give a s**t anymore - wants to have some fun. Tiger Woods’ tone-deaf prank puts damper on otherwise thrilling day During Tiger Woods' much-anticipated return to golf Thursday at the Genesis Invitational, he pulled a controversial prank on Justin Thomas.
  4. Yes, although there is a subtle difference between a minimum guaranteed salary and a guaranteed contract. NHL, MLB, NBA players usually get guaranteed contracts so they will get the total amount they sign for regardless if they're cut/injured/etc. NFL players get a minimum guaranteed salary, but no guaranteed contracts (except for some lucky few). It's amazing to me that NFL players can't get enough leverage to demand guaranteed contracts, considering how short their careers are. Will be interesting to see if in the future, LIV (or a future upstart leagues) might force the PGA Tour to start offering guaranteed contracts to those players that qualify in order to keep young talent on the PGA tour. Doubtful in the near future, but you never know.
  5. That won't help either. El Salvador kind-of tried that.
  6. Been doing golf trips to Streamsong since they opened. Definitely sounds like a positive deal for golfers, although it'll probably get worse before it gets better (construction always sucks). Interesting that they did the deal even though it's landlocked by Mosaic. Looking forward to seeing what develops.
  7. You guys spend waaaay too much time worrying about this. I do a rapid DNA analysis. Within 2 hours, I can guarantee that I touched the ball. Only $30k, and if you order today, you get a free golf cart attachment! What is Rapid DNA? Rapid DNA is the generation of a DNA profile to identify in less than 2 hours. Rapid DNA IDs are extremely accurate while preserving privacy.

I agree. I think for pros, the skill in PKs is largely mental. PKs have to do with the moment, the intimidation from the goalie, the mind games, etc. If you want to call in luck, then I would liken it to poker. Sure, the card in poker, which are random, matter. But there's so much more to it.
  9. Watched for a few minutes today. Charlie was clearly in pain. I'm sure they cleared his playing with a doctor that he won't do any permanent damage. I found it bizarre and almost cute the way he was grimacing and hobbling around just like his father did at Torrey Pines. What are the odds he becomes a pro golfer? I'm sure you can bet on that somewhere.
  10. All you need to know about Elon Musk
  11. Exactly. Not even close. But just like the 2nd amendment, people with an agenda can use it to mean whatever they want it to. I'm really trying not to enjoy the Musk train wreck, but I can't help it.
  12. Yeah, many people don't like it. A few years back Danny Mayer who owns the Union Square Hospitality Group and started Shake Shack tried no-tipping at his restaurants and it didn't work out. I agree that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense in many situations. I feel the same way about food delivery. Do I need to pay a delivery driver 10x more for bringing me caviar than for bringing me chicken wings? Seamless/Grubhub and those types of apps try to push a tip based on % too. Still, it's been proven hard to change. Danny Meyer’s Restaurants Will End Their No-Tipping Policy - The New York Times Union Square Hospitality Group, which helped lead the move away from tips, changes course as its restaurants reopen.
  13. there are a lot of possible explanations to this (nicer restaurants have more staff per person, it motivates the staff to upsell, you spend more time at a nice restaurant, etc.) In the end, I think the tradition is there because it's an easy to calculate shortcut and works reasonably well for restaurants and wait staff.

  15. Yes, didn't come out right. I was just saying that if this was a feud with Dustin Johnson or someone more newsworthy, it might be a bigger story. Thus OP didn't see much about this until now, even though the story was published a few weeks ago.
  16. Pat Perez? Who cares? Maybe the LIV golf media folks are trying to generate some drama.
  17. I voted Champion's Tour. Let alone the fact that he may not even be qualified for the job of commissioner, it's way too much of a time commitment, and he doesn't need the money or fame. Why would he possibly want that job?
  18. Too late to edit previous post, but if you want to get a sense of how big and complex Twitter's infra is, you can check out their blog. I like this post: Processing billions of events in real time at Twitter How we process large scale data in real time at Twitter while reducing latency and improving accuracy.
  19. These systems are so complex that although a lot of stuff is semi-automated, even forgetting about the inevitable outages and cyberattacks that happen 24x7x365 at such a large service, there is an endless stream of decision that have to be made; Scaling up, scaling down, security patches, network optimization, equipment upgrades, etc. Each one of those things need to be tested and executed without affecting production. Sure it can run for a bit, but pieces will start going offline pretty fast without constant attention.
  20. OT I know, but I never understood the obsession with wind, especially at the amateur level. The effect that wind has on your hooking worm-burner is really, really small. But even in the pro ranks, you always see players spend a lot of time agonizing about the wind, looking at flags, clouds, etc. and then looking at their caddies incredulously when their balls end up short or long. Seems like wind measurement and direction can vary so much with height and time that even if you had an anemometer and wind sock on your golf bag, how much would that really help?
  21. I'm with you. I'd rather not post my score than deal with such insanity.
  22. Haven't seen this, will put it on my list. Have you seen We Need to Talk About Kevin? I thought it was a strong movie about school violence (I won't say any more) from the perspective of the family.
  23. My 2 cents is that this could help beginners or people really caught in swing thoughts during a round. Sometimes I have so many thoughts in my head that if there was a voice that said, "hit the ball first with the center of the clubface and forget about your swing" I'd probably play better for a bit. As for long-term swing improvement, I don't think so.
  24. Ah OK. So then it becomes a matter of knowing which leaves are raked together or blown into a pile vs just fallen, which is pretty easy to tell.
  25. I found this, on golf.com, but it doesn't seem right because leaves are not mentioned as an abnormal course condition. Thoughts? "But even if this local rule isn’t in place, you do have another option your situation could fall under that’s covered in Rule 16.1e, Relief for Ball Not Found but in or on Abnormal Course Condition. An Abnormal Course Condition is defined as either an animal hole, ground under repair, immovable obstruction or temporary water. So if your crushed drive happens to just miss the fairway and trickle into that pile of leaves — something the grounds crew would have raked for pending removal, for example — and if it is “known or virtually certain” your ball is somewhere in there even though you can’t find it (don’t cheat!), you can play it as ground under repair, not stroke and distance." An important rule you MUST know when playing fall golf in the leaves Playing fall golf is great, but those pesky leaves can also mean finding your golf ball can be a struggle. Make sure to remember this rule.
