  1. Standard on all clubs except driver. Its a bit oversized, softer grip that i like for the driver, i think the one reason i can hit this driver better than most any other driver ive tried. Especially at the range when its hot and my hands get sweaty(i dont wear a glove, just dont like them) it helps me still keep a good solid grip on the club and help me keep the head more square at impact resulting in more consistent shots.
  2. I know ive seen drivers as large as 535 cc on ebay, but i doubt i would get any more distance out of anything more than 460 cc, it finally gets to the point where it gets so awkward to swing that if you go any larger than 460 cc. You might get more distance but hit it all over the place so it wouldnt lower your scores any, 300 yards out into the woods is not as good as 225 in the fairway.
  3. Why would anyone want to chip while on the green? Thats what the putter is for. I putt sometimes when im not even on the fringe, i can simply get the ball closer by putting than chipping. Anyone who would possibly be stupid enough to chip on a green and make a divot on the green should be kicked off the course, what an idiot. If its a funny shaped green, just putt harder to get through the fringe if you must but never chip on the green. Greens are the one part of the course that should always look perfect, dont encourage people to chip. I know if i did it i would damage the green, i would never attempt it. That guy in Korea was lucky he didnt have to pay for the damage to the green or perhaps get detained or worse.
  4. My bag has a pocket thats supposed to be a cooler for a couple drinks. Well it works very poorly for keeping drinks cool but its where i put my tees and a few balls that i plan on using for that particular round. If i want cold drinks i bring my cooler from work with me and put it on the cart. I'll usually put a few in my pocket before going to the range or playing and if i need more i get them out of the bag.
  5. I started out with a box set of intech clubs from walmart, actually not a bad set, for $100. I used them for about a year and bought a different set of irons last year. The top flites would be a good beginner set, ive seen a set of those at kmart. Starting out, you need the most forgiving clubs you can get and the cheaper box sets are usually pretty forgiving. Theyre not meant to be a long term solution but a good way to start as many people buy clubs and never end up playing very much or quit the game so they never advance from the beginner box sets. Craigslist is another place to look, you can find a lot of used clubs on there as well.
  6. You guys are talking monopoly money, geez around here its $1000 a year for membership to a local country club and i think thats way too much. I go to play golf, could care less about the pool or lounge or anything else. I dont have a membership anywhere, give me the freedom to play whereever i want without feeling like i have to get my moneys worth. Of all the courses around here, the most expensive is $50 for 18 with a cart on the weekends, most are $30 or less. A course i had a membership a couple years ago cost $300 for a full year.
  7. I have ordered several things from rockbottomgolf and gotten good service, very quick shipping, 3 days from time of order. I guess they sell such a high volume that they can offer such great prices. Best online store to order from, im sure there are others that are good as well but i would highly recommend rockbottomgolf, best prices, fast shipping, and a large selection of items to choose from. The feedback is very useful as I recently bought a pair of golf shoes and from the feedback i found out they run small so i ordered a size bigger and they fit perfectly and got a nice pair of shoes for a very small price.
  8. 300 yards seems to be the magic number everyone wants to get. Ive never hit a drive that far, farthest ive ever went was about 275-280 yards and all those in that range were either wind aided or downhill or maybe a generous bounce off the cart path. Most of the time if i hit one 225-230 im delighted but i have a swing speed in the low 90's. Someone with a swing speed of 105 or more should hit the driver about 275-280 on average and thats not terribly uncommon, with a good one going 300 or more. A friend I play with often fits that description, ive seen him nearly drive the green on a 330 yard par 4 before, he really smashed that one, made birdie. But ive also seen him come close to driving a short par 4 and still make a bogey so hitting the ball far doesnt always guarantee a good score or low handicap.
  9. id add a 3 hybrid. Do you hit your 5 wood very well? If you do then maybe a 3 wood might be another good choice to add. If you dont, you probably wont be able to hit a 3 wood very well either. Hybrids are usually easier to hit than fairway woods, especially from the rough or any awkward lie, just so hard for a high handicapper to make solid contact from anything but a perfect lie in the fairway with a 3 or 5 wood. Im not an overly long player but i can usually reach most par 5's(around 500 yards or maybe a little more) with driver, 3 hybrid and pw or sw. Ive learned that hitting the 3 hybrid gives me the best chance to advance the ball farther on average than my 3 wood. Like chef said less sometimes is more, i only have 12 clubs in my bag and thats enough for me, those are the ones i can hit. Finding clubs you can hit will help improve you more than trying to get extra distance from something you have trouble hitting consistently.
  10. Ive went through about 5 in the last 2 years, i broke the one i liked the most, my nitro ld 20 driver i bought at kmart and just ordered another one online earlier this morning from kmart. Granted the price of all the drivers i have tried might barely add up to more than $100 so ive gone the cheap route. I had gotten to where i could hit that nitro pretty good and for $35 including shipping i figured it was worth the risk to see if this one will last longer. Ive tried a lot of them out, some many times more expensive than the nitro but its the one i like the best and one of the cheapest too, going with what i know works, hoping the shaft breaking in the other one was a fluke and not the norm.
  11. Im a higher handicap yet and i use cheap balls and can get them to spin, sometimes. All balls are designed to spin, if they didnt they wouldnt go anywhere. Ive played some used maxfli balls ive gotten off ebay and got decent spin out of them, for about a quarter a ball. Your swing is what generates spin, not the ball. If you dont hit the ball solidly with your irons, youre not going to generate any spin, this i know from experience. You'll hit those low line drives that hit the green and bounce and roll off and over. I play at a local par 3 course myself quite a bit and there are some tricky shots because some of the holes are so short that its only a partial shot. One of the holes is only 74 yards in fact and the longest is 150so its easy to try to hit a partial shot and hit it slightly off the heel or toe and knock it over the green.
  12. Sad part is, even when he was fat and a drunk, he could play. If only he would have had the drive to get in shape, both physically and emotionally years ago he would have had a good, probably not great but good career, a few wins here and there, would have kept his card and not have to rely on sponsors exemptions and such. He can still play, but its clear that his best days are behind him. Maybe in a few years he could try the champions tour but those players are so good they would eat his lunch too, especially with Kenny Perry and probably Vijay Singh joining in a few years, its only going to get stronger. Possibly going back down to the Nationwide tour, but those players are still better than he is and he would struggle to make cuts there as well, and for a lot less money. Its meant to be a developmental tour to springboard young players up to the pga tour, not a fallback for those not good enough to stay.
  13. Give me the cheap wooden ones from walmart, just bought some last week for $6 for 200 of the 3 1/4 inch. Who cares if they break, they're 3 cents each, most of the time when i tee off the tee goes with the ball so i dont care if i lose them either.
  14. Why has nobody else ever done this before, the woman jumping in front of him during his swing. Because it didnt happen, he's trying to make money off a charity, come on John, these are the same organizations that are giving you chances to play now because you're not good enough to get into tournaments on your own. Daly was fat and out of shape then, any injury was caused by that. As far as a crazy fan jumping onto the field of play, I think even if he did hit her, he wouldnt be liable as she was somewhere she wasnt supposed to be. Say if some nut ran onto a racetrack and got hit by a car and got killed. Sounds crazy but i think a couple years ago some nut at a formula 1 race ran out onto the track during the race protesting something, had something to do about where the race was held, political in nature im certain. He didnt get hit but come on would you run in front of a racecar? If you're an idiot maybe. Daly would have had tons of witnesses to prove that this lady was a nutcase if she did in fact run out in front of him so she would have had no case. It should be similiar to if someone runs out in front of you while you're driving, you cant stop immediately so it you hit them its an accident and you shouldnt be sued for it, it was their fault. If he hit her it would have been her fault.
  15. I had my driver shaft break last week, though it was a cheap driver. So im not even going to bother fixing it. I was at the range and all of a sudden whoosh, the head flew about 50 yards. I went out and picked it up a few minutes later and its sitting at home on my coffee table. Ive got 3 other drivers anyway, ill just pick which one i like best and use it.
  16. im lucky to get 1-2 pars every 9, make mostly bogeys and always end up having a terrible hole where i make an 8 or something. I dont play 18 that often, usually just 9, the best i ever did for 9 holes was a 42(+6) with 3 pars, a birdie, 4 bogeys, and one triple, ironically the triple coming on the first hole, somehow i recovered after that and only shot +3 for the last 8 holes. My best 18 hole score was I think a 94, and that was on a par 70 course.
  17. The Lakers are the better team, thats obvious. Ray Allen being fatigued, give me a break, they dont play back to back games in the finals, quit acting like a little girl. If the Lakers play at least somewhat good, they will win the next 2, their talent level is so much better than Boston. Kobe played poorly in the 4th quarter of game 2, thats why the Lakers lost that one. He got into rare foul trouble and just wasnt on the floor enough to make his normal contribution. Usually someone else will step up and Fisher did in game 3. In game 2 everyone struggled in the 4th quarter, dont count on that happening again Boston. I really just dont see how they beat both Cleveland and Orlando but im sure the Lakers appreciate not having to play either of those teams, both would have been a tougher matchup for L.A.

    Cart girls?

I only recall recently seeing a cart girl at any course ive ever played at and I think it was because it was the memorial weekend and business was greater. She was pretty cute but I didnt buy anything, i usually bring my own cooler with either gatorade or water in it, never have consumed alcohol while playing as I dont very often anyway and Im sure would not be beneficial to my game. I dont mind a nice distraction once in a while but its just not something i normally see around here.
  19. I only use a tee if im hitting my 3 wood or driver on a par 4. I used to use a broken tee on par 3's with an iron but now i dont see the point. I would hit a poor iron shot if i use a tee. Ill find the best patch of grass to put the ball on(avoid the already present divots, even moving the ball back a foot or 2 if need be). Ive gotten pretty good at picking the ball cleanly lately with my irons, using a tee causes me to hit my irons thin and make a terrible shot. Use a tee if if works for you but not for me, just setting the ball on a perfect patch of grass much like a perfect lie in the fairway works much better for me. Nicklaus is not wrong of course, but theres no one-size-fits-all solution for every situation in golf.
  20. I like that idea, taking the cart keys, especially if the other group was drunk, it would take them so long to figure out what to do that you wouldnt see them again. Ill remember that in case I have a similar problem in the future, its always more fun to outsmart someone. If they're electric carts, i would have lifted the seat and disconnected the battery, they would never figure that one out, they would just think the cart went dead.
  21. If someone is hitting the ball that much farther than me and I was holding them up, id certainly let them play through, as im sure they were playing from much shorter tees than you were and you were still ahead of them. If they were that slow, a few more minutes letting you play through wouldnt have mattered to them. When they approached you, that would have been a good time to have asked them to let you play through, if they refused, then you at least tried, explaining that you had been practicing a lot lately and were hitting the ball much better and still trying to figure out how far you hit your driver. Ive noticed that on tour, players wait all the time, they just simply dont space out the tee times enough, i guess they would never finish if they did.
  22. I think I saw rockbottomgolf had a limited supply of tommy armour 845 irons for sale, for a very good price too if they still have any. If i were looking for irons i might have bought them, a friend of mine has some tommy armours he's been playing forever and I guess he still likes them.

    Kobe Bryant

Lebron coming to Dallas? Would be interesting if they had the money to do it and keep their team together for the most part, keep Dirk, Jason Kidd, and Caron Butler. They would challenge the Lakers for sure, especially with the uncertainty of Phil Jackson coming back next year. Might be the best chance for Lebron, even over staying in Cleveland and adding another great player or going to the Bulls.
  24. Greg

    Kobe Bryant

Lets look at the last 2 years, the cavs have had the best record the last 2 years and homecourt advantage throughout, so they must have some good players besides Lebron. Maybe the eastern conference is easier than the west, fewer good teams and the bad ones are really bad(nets, knicks). If you have the best record, you should have the best team. Guess that works for regular season, example Phoenix Suns from a few years ago, though they didnt play defense. Cleveland had one of the top defenses so cant blame that either. They're missing that important sidekick, a Scottie Pippen type to complement Lebron. If he stays in Cleveland, maybe they can get that guy, be it Bosh or Staudemire or someone else.
  25. I like the idea of an indoor range, I wish we had one of those close to me. It would be nice on rainy days and to keep practicing during the winter, it does get cold sometimes here in southern il. I would prefer to hit outdoors, off grass normally but for inclement weather it would be nice to have the option of a climate controlled indoor range.
