Colder temperatures and the effects on ball distance
luckyluke699 replied to rogerw's topic in Golf Talk
Correct that, today it was just about sub 25 degrees... and it'll probably get colder! -
I wish pros in the uk commonly used this technology to show us what we did, rather than telling us what to try to do and what to "feel"... That's a nice swing!

2010 New Groove rule : is it a big deal??
luckyluke699 replied to ronaldkuntoro's topic in Rules of Golf
short answer --> As a 14 handicap, no... not in the slightest (coming from an 18 handcapper). As mentioned you have till 2024 really and no local club will care at that time as you and I won't be good enough for the "grooves rule" to be holding our game up even if you were playing with 15 year old clubs at that point. Conforming with this rules change will be seemless and easy for 99% of everyday amateurs (which is the point). My inability to FIR/GIR/SS/Scramble/Putt well enough will be far more of a hinderance to my game so no one will check or care come 2024... -
I think people over estimate how "good" you need to be able to be to strike a blade, like it's the reserve of + handicappers and pros only. Try one... like the poster above said "for better or worse, you know exactly wat the ball is doing as soon as it leaves your club face", and you might surprise yourself.

I personally haven't played any and I can't see them becomming commonplace for 2 reasons... 1) It's really just a par 5 with another long fairway shot thrown in on top, dosn't add anything extra. 2) People who own the golf course will have more land to look after! :P would be good to play one from a novelty point of view though

I've never understood the strong loft thing. I'm starting to wonder if the concept of "numbered clubs" should be changed to simply stamping the stock loft of the club? So for example instead of someone comparing their TM Burner 2.0 "7 iron" to an MP-67 "7 iron", he could compare his 31* stamped Burner 2.0 (7 iron) to the 32* stamped MP-67 (6 iron) for an idea? That said though, it's obvious from your post that you like the clubs for the way they strike the ball etc so go for them! :P

I don't buy this, you don't need to listen to me singing karaoke to realise I am tone deaf. I was not born with the same vocal capabilities Michael Jackson was, and the same applies to sports such as golf! Sure you can progress massively through tuition and practise, but the reality is the pros aren't just guys who have had lots of time to practse... they're the very best, the cream of the guys who've had lots of time to practise .

Advice needed on newbies club purchase
luckyluke699 replied to Azandford's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Wilson Di9 5-pw. As a beginner you probably won't be hitting 3 or 4 irons for a little while anyway and a bargain for an 8 iron set at under $200. Nice big cavity in the back of the club to help as you've just started, and that's plenty to spend tbh... http://cgi.ebay.com/Wilson-Golf-Staf...ht_2617wt_1078 Or even hunt about and get some second hand if it proves even cheaper? -
There are guidelines for a holes length which determine it's par. As we all know you can have an easy par 4 or a hard par 4, but this is what course ratings are for The USGA states "A male scratch golfer, for rating purposes, can hit tee shots an average of 250 yards and can reach a 470-yard hole in two shots at sea level. A female scratch golfer, for rating purposes, can hit tee shots an average of 210 yards and can reach a 400-yard hole in two shots at sea level.". Due to this logic of distance, the current guidelines exist... Men: Par 3 - Up to 250 yards Par 4 - 251 to 470 yards Par 5 - 471 yards to 690 yards Par 6 - 691 yards or more Women: Par 3 - Up to 210 yards Par 4 - 211 to 400 yards Par 5 - 401 to 575 yards Par 6 - 575 yards or more

Advice needed on newbies club purchase
luckyluke699 replied to Azandford's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
This gent is absolutely correct, purchase a set of clubs with a good/large cavity back from a reputable brand and have your local store adjust the length and lie (very cheap!). Your swing will change considerably, and the clubs you buy now, you will probably "outgrow" in 12 months time. Spend that money on lessons and range practise getting better instead. I'm on my 3rd set of irons now, and they've all been second hand so don't be afraid of second hand clubs. At the end of the day it's a chunk of metal. If looked after well it will last a long time! -
Will be keeping an eye on things, keep the updates coming. Always a good read!!

I don't know the exact yardage for an average shot to be honest... and I really should!! Might wait till the summer before finding out though, when my average distance increases by about 20-25 yards again

Leave for work at 7:30am, return at 6:30pm (it's dark at both those times). Consequently - Range 4 times per week, 36 holes per month max really.

Colder temperatures and the effects on ball distance
luckyluke699 replied to rogerw's topic in Golf Talk
It won't be long before I'm practising in sub 30 degree temperatures (fareinheit) when swinging my golf club! :P -
Because due to the lack of loft he hits the putter on the upswing, the same as a driver...

Firstly congratulations on taking the game up, it's a cracking sport... welcome to the addiction. Fixing your slice: As for your driving issues, you can spend your money on clubs, or lessons. Clubs may help a little, but lessons will help a lot, especially when you are first starting! Your driving/slicing conundrum indicates lessons may help you more than a new club also. Alternatively, you can film your swing and post it in the forums here and people can give you advice: http://thesandtrap.com/playing_tips/filming_your_swing Hybrid & Club Distances: The pga tour average for a hybrid is 225 yards carry, 237 total. ref: http://www.mytrackman.com/TrackMan.O...GANumbers.html All the forum members are trying to say here is that as a beginner, it is not likely that you are hitting the ball consistently well and 10-27% further than the PGA tour professionals, so please don't be offended. Other: Finally, a very obvious point. Golf is about precision and not just distance. So why are you trying to use the same club you hit 250-300 yards, to hit a 165 yard shot? Your distances you hit each club are unique to you, and the conditions on the course, but take a look at the following just to get an idea: http://golf.about.com/od/beginners/l/blclubdistance.htm Hope that helped... oh and if you're a troll "few cough" ...

Colder temperatures and the effects on ball distance
luckyluke699 replied to rogerw's topic in Golf Talk
Not sure about the US, but in the UK I definitely notice a difference which is very visible on the range. On average I would say my shots are 20 yards shorter in cold weather (e.g 40 farenheit versus 60 farenheit). I think most of this is due to the extra humidity and the range balls though! -
125 gap wedge because wind was behind her i suspect yeah... or i hope... :P

Cobra X SpeedPro vs. Cobra S2
luckyluke699 replied to Arsenal8807's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
This really doesn't surprise me, I expect you will find the S2 is much more forgiving than the Speed Pro. I guess it will probably fall down to the individual and most people will go for forgiveness over anything else (which is quite sensible)... -
Cobra X SpeedPro vs. Cobra S2
luckyluke699 replied to Arsenal8807's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I haven't hit the S2 driver myself, but I do play the Cobra x-stiff Speed Pro S (shallow face) driver, which has the Fujikura speeder shaft in as you've mentioned, and personally I think it's fantastic No offset (square to open clubface), which lets you power through the ball, though it is quite loud (but I don't mind that!). The main difference appears to be the AFT (adjustable flight technology) on the S2, but if you don't need that I would plum for the x speed pro which is aimed at the better ball driver. From the experience of having owned the Cobra L5V I much prefer the speed pro (didn't use the AFT anyway - always set to neutral!). It is also currently a much better deal (second hand or new) due to being a 2007 model driver. In the UK the Speed Pro typically goes for £99 ($160) brand new, and £65 ($105) second hand at the moment. -
Bending Cast Clubs
luckyluke699 replied to Vladimir Puttin''s topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I found this which appears to give some potentially reasonable info: http://www.clubrepairnews.com/techre...ding-clubs.htm Can cast clubs be bent? Most irons can be bent, but the question of being able to bend cast clubs is still asked by many. The simple answer to that question is “yes”. 17-4 stainless steel cast irons will be more difficult to bend since they are harder (C34-38 on the Rockwell Scale) than 431 (C18-25) or carbon steel (B 70-80). Keep in mind that we are assuming the iron has the proper heat treatment and annealing that will permit bending.... Is there a guarantee that a club will not break during bending? Even the most skilled repair professionals cannot guarantee a club will not break while bending. Generally, breakage is a result of some type of inconsistency in the metallurgy of the club or manufacturing defect. Cast clubs may not have been heat-treated properly and can be very brittle. The hosel may break when subjected to bending pressure. Its possible the hosel of the iron may have been bored off-center resulting in inconsistent hosel wall thicknesses that crack when bent. None of these conditions can be identified prior to bending. However, breakage is very rare. -

I'm still sticking with my earlier recommendation of golfshot gps for your android - www.golfshot.com It will tell you GPS measurements to all hazards, back, front and centre of green as well as giving you an aerial gps view. It also takes care up of your layp distances too. Shot vid here:

He's right, this looks like just the regular Cobra ZL but in white, and the AFT stuff was on the driver before that (Cobra L5V) so it's been around a while... still it's a good marketing gimmick to get you to pay the $$$ just to buy the latest driver in white lol!
