  1. Here's the problem I have with that type of instruction: while it may work it take an inordinate amount of timing. The golf swing has enough things that can go wrong and adding additional timing to the mix only complicates it further.
  2. The course where my league plays is really narrow. On some holes, the fairway is about 30 yards and it's lined by trees on both sides. The course isn't overly long so from a course management perspective I'm contemplating taking the driver out of play. How wide does a fairway need to be before you'll pull your driver?
  3. I've been working on a few changes to my swing this year. I'm trying to stabilize my base a bit more, I was basically locking out my right leg and it was causing all kinds of timing issues. I also wanted to work on dropping my hands to get the club into the slot in a better position and finally creating and holding some more lag in my swing. I've always been a picker so my ball flight is higher than I'd like so everything is sort of coming together into one giant fix I've been using drills like the 3 to 9 drill, the pump drill and using the fiberglass sticks to make sure I'm turning not swaying and that my hip slide is moving forward. Tonight at the range I hit some of the most amazing shots I've ever hit. The contact was dead center, I could almost feel the bend in the shaft and the swings were almost effortless. The best part was I felt like I was barely swinging and the ball was just exploding off the clubhead. Granted, as with all swing changes, I hit some real ugly fat shots but overall I'm getting close. I can feel the changes in my swing coming together and my ballstriking (when it comes together) is the best it's ever been, at least for a least a few swings. The challenge now is to keep ingraining the changes and bring it to the course. I'm no sure how much longer it's going to take but I can just feel like I'm on the verge!
  4. Rory is a great kid with a bright future but the reality is that he's really accomplished very little to this point. It's not fair to compare him at this point to Tiger in his prime. Let's see what Rory's prime looks like before we get too excited. Tiger in his prime wasn't just dominant, he changed the game. He pulled up the level of play of the entire tour. Hell he had his own signature shots like the 2 iron stinger.
  5. It's really a challenge for the USGA to make the course play hard. They can't control the weather and it's rained almost every day. Yes the rough is a bit less than I would have expected but I'm sure they had factored in a certain amount of firmness. The fairways and greens have been made much easier by the rain and there's also been little to no wind. Mother nature neutered what could have been a a very difficult course/setup.
  6. Are you the same genius goof was hitting golf balls against the side of his house? Yeah, you're a real genius! You've got no chance. I'd give you a year and you wouldn't come close to breaking 80.
  7. I think the answer is simple. You don't average 285 to 300. You probably think you do because you haven't measured it accurately. You've probably hit a few bombs that roll out to 270ish or maybe even 300 and you translate that rarity into a "I average 300". I once hit a drive 320 but I average about 260. The real question is, who cares how far you hit your wedges? The important question is "how close to the flag do your hit your wedges". If I hit my lob wedge 65 yards and it lands 2 feet from the flag and you hit yours 120 and it lands 30 feet from the flag I'm clearly going to score better. There are no strokes deducted for distance.
  8. People seem to forget that Kobe raped a girl and he's #2 on that list. Tiger may be a total pig but he didn't do anything illegal.
  9. I like this idea a LOT. It gives you something to think about other than a pure swing thought. I'm going to give this a try this week! :)
  10. Haters gonna hate.
  11. Ben Crane is the PGA's version of Bill Murray. The guy is freaking hysterical. Bubba in the overall's is absolutely priceless. Ironically Ricki Fowler seems to be the least comfortable of the group. It's nice to see these guys let loose once in a while. They play under tremendous pressure and scrutiny and things like this reaffirm that some of them are just regular guys with amazing talent. If you haven't seen Ben Crane's other videos you should...they're hysterical.
  12. Justin is completely delusional. The guys goes on about almost breaking the course record in the opening then proceeds to skull a wedge and miss 2 putts. What I love most above the nutball is that even after getting beat for the second time he says "I could take all these guys anytime". Robert has no business being on the show. I've watched all the episodes and I've yet to see him hit a single decent shot. It's disgraceful that he's even on the course. Skulls, shanks, toe shots.... I hated to see Russell leave but he went down fighting. No shame in losing when your opponent goes birdie/birdie. Petey is back, pissed off and could be VERY dangerous.
  13. My favorite thing to do at a tournament is watch the pro's warm up at the range. The last tournament I went to Kevin Na didn't make the cut. Now Kevin isn't a top tier PGA player but the kid sure does work hard. On a Sunday, instead of going home, he was at the range hitting sand wedges for THREE HOURS. He literally stayed on the range for three hours hitting wedge after wedge. I don't think he missed his target by more than 15 feet all day. That kind of commitment makes me say "WOW".
  14. I've been reading a lot of reviews of the R11 and color seems to keep coming up. I don't understand why people are so hung up on the color? Hell, I'd play a magenta driver if I hit it well. :P
  15. I'm far from an expert on swing theory but I used to be a competitive athlete so I know a bit about athleticism. It seems to me that in regards to a golf swing a "balanced" approach would be a lot easier to repeat than one that requires a movement of all of your weight from one side of the body to another. That's not to say that a full weight change swing can't work, it just requires exponentially more timing to pull off. Since our margin of error in a golf swing is very small it would seem to me that a balances approach would make more sense. My swing is self taught and one of the things I struggle with is consistency. I've never really paid enough attention to my base, I'm always worried about where my arms and hands are. This year I've started to focus on my legs and hips and it's making a HUGE difference.
  16. Those are two excellent videos. What I found most telling about Vicky Hurst's swing is how she loads up against her right leg. When I tend to pull hook the ball it's usually because I over rotate and it causes all kinds of timing nightmares when I spin out too quickly. Is it my imagination or does it look like Petterson's legs are locked on that second video?
  17. I watched the video and the first thing that came to my mind was "so it's basically a one piece takeaway". I guess anything that helps you get your club in a better position would probably be helpful.
  18. I was hoping that Russell would last a while simply because he's a contributor here. As for the game, I don't like it at all. In golf it's very rare that you don't know what score you have to beat to win. Playing a game of blackjack with a golf just seems stupid to me. It should be a skills competition not some dumb ass guessing game. If they want them to play blackjack, at least let them both know what score they need then shoot for that. I'm starting to think that the producers of the Big Break are starting to run out of ideas.
  19. I used Golflogix. I bought it primarily for league use so I usually only need it for 9 holes. I like it but I'm not sure if my battery would last for a full 18.
  20. Justin's act was old and tedious halfway through the first episode. Is anyone really sad that the mouthy douchebag is gone? Every comment out of him was part of some absurd tough guy act. Perhaps if he spent less time talking about who needs to be "taken down a peg" he might still be on the show. Apparently messing with Texas isn't such a big deal. :) Good riddance.
  21. I'd like to see a broadening of the "ground under repair" rule. Rather that call it "under repair" maybe a provision for "not repaired" could be added. Hitting into an unfilled divot, golf cart tire rut, unraked bunker or mud filled bunker etc. Conditions on public courses can vary greatly and I HATE being punished because some lazy, half drunk slob can't be bothered to rake a bunker or replace a divot.
  22. I got a chance to hit the R-11 today at the range. A guy next to me had just bought one and asked me if I wanted to try it. I didn't want to believe the hype but the R-11 is the best driver I've ever hit, ever! I hit 3 drives, all in excess of 270 yards with the most perfect trajectory I've ever seen. I also had a dispersion of about 15 - 20 yards. If I could get one for $230 I'd do it in an instant!
  23. This years group seems to have an overabundance of douchebaggery. The guy from Canada seems to have some real self esteem issues and the Texan reminds me of the guy in the bar that talks about how bad ass he us right up to the point someone kicks the shit out him. I just hope Russell doesn't choke someone out. :P
  24. I got a chance to hit last years version of the SF last week. I was away at a company event and had to go the rental route. I wasn't particularly fond of the driver. It's absurdly long and is as light as a feather. It felt like I was just swinging a shaft. Not a big fan. I'd love to try this years variant!
