Shortylook's MP-59 thread brought a question to mind that I couldn't find the answer to in the rules.....

If during the swing, a club fails and the club head flies off, I assume that the stroke is counted, no matter the result, correct?  If the club fails before contact is made does the stroke count?

Because the club was swung with the intent to strike the ball, I assume that unless he's somehow able to stop his swing before the headless club reaches the ball, the stroke still counts, right.

Edited to add that I found the answer in decisions 14/2 and 14/3.  Unless the failure occured during the backswing with the clubhead coming off before the downswing was initiated, the stroke counts.  If the failure occured in the backswing and the club head departed BEFORE the downswing was initiated the swing does not count.

Sorry, should have found that before posting my question.

Yes?

Since it isn't necessary to make contact with the ball for it to be counted as a stroke, that would still not matter.  If the clubhead comes off during the backswing it is not a stroke.  If the downswing is begun with the intent to strike the ball, then it counts as a stroke unless the swing is stopped before the club would have reached the ball.

Club Breaks During Backswing; Swing Completed

Q. The head of a player's club separated from the shaft during his backswing. The player completed the swing but missed the ball. Is the player deemed to have made a stroke?

A. No. A stroke is "the forward movement of the club " A shaft by itself is not a club - see Rule 4-1a .

14/3

Clubhead Separates from Shaft on Downswing

Q. A player starts his downswing and the clubhead separates from the shaft. The player continues his swing but no contact is made with the ball. Did the player make a stroke?

A. Yes.
