I am fortunate enough that my office is less than a quarter mile from my CC. I try to go 2-3 days a week at lunch and work on my short game. Yesterday in my golf league I wasted 3 strokes on short little chip shots that went about 6 inches and of coarse missed the green. I practice this shot all the time, but when I get into a match I seem to forget everything I worked on. Any tips on this?

Cheers,
Rick Menary

The more that I think about it I must be moving my head off the ball and not accelerating through enough.

I feel "yips" is a mental thing. Seems like I too practice well but when engaged in competition, natural instincts take over and I revert back to bad habits.

Doctor heal thyself. You got it. You can concentrate on the ball by tilting your head toward the right (if you're right handed) and look with your left eye. Naturally you are looking with both eyes and are probably right eye dominant, but it's how you think you are looking at it. That's why Gary Player (what does he know) says to not look up until you hear the putt drop. Same for chipping or pitching or driving. I don't do that but i\the ball is definitely away before I pick my head up. That's my swing thought over chips.

Check your technique. If your head is moving on a chip shot… something's goofy. Put 70% of your weight left, leave it there, and make a simple, simple motion.

I get the yips with short chips and short putts. Got a tip from a pro about relaxing the hands  and putting the clubface to the angle that I want to hit the ball and then take my grip and it really helps. I lot of time its too muscle muscle tension in the hands that kill the delicate short chip or putt.

Inconsistent chip shots generally come from 2 things. Overactive hands (flipping) and having our weight back or falling back.

To see if you can contact your chip shots a bit more crisply I'd like you to try 2 things.

#1 - Get your weight 100% on your front foot. Put your back foot up on the tip toe so you will place no weight on it. Keep your head over your front foot as well and make sure that your head and upper spine do not fall backwards during the swing.

#2 - Hover your club head in the air behind the ball. Hold it up about 2 inches in the air. This will encourage a downward blow through impact and help get rid of the urge to scoop the ball and help it up.

If you are doing these two things correctly, then it might be a psychological issue and my best peace of advice would be: AGGRESSIVE ATTITUDE

Erik,

I meant I think I was peeking my head turning and looking at target before impact.
