Just a curious question. Have you ever cheated in golf? ?(either in a comp, or just a social rounds with friends) If so, how many times? (once/rarely/often/always) How did you cheat? Did you get away with it?

This will be interesting..............

I'd like to re-word the question--is there anyone out there who

hasn't cheated at some point in their lifetime? When I was younger I cheated all the time, especially with friends (It became a matter of who cheated less ). Today it's different although I'm not going to follow the rules to a T if it's not a serious or tournament round. Lost ball? Drop another where you think it was and hit it, take your stroke and move on. It helps with slow play, anyway.

yeah i used to when i was a kid it would only be suttel tho if i had a 6 i would be like yeah i had a 5 on the last hole i got away with it most of the time if some one cought me on it i wouls just act dumb and pretened to count through my shots then be like o yeah 6 sorry about that. it was mainly because i hated the members at my old club and beating them was awesome and they hated it :) and i got a golf voucher to a golf shop so it was awsome. i dont cheat now im older and a better golfer

Sadly I have cheated a few times, though not for a few years. If somebody else was recording the scores and said, what did you have, a bogey? when I really had double, I have been known to say `yeah a bogey`. Not for a while though!!

Not intentionally, although in one of my early times playing, I hit O.B. and dropped from where it crossed O.B.. It was pointed out to be after the round that O.B. is stroke and distance. I thought only a lost ball caused that - then again, I only knew the latter because of Goldfinger .

Ignorance isn't an excuse, so technically I cheated. Then again, I don't currently have a problem with people who shoot north of 110 treating O.B. as a lateral hazard, mainly as a pace of play issue.

No, you didn't cheat. The definition of "cheat" is:

To deceive and defraud; to impose upon; to trick; to swindle. Being that it was not intentional, you may have broken the rules, however you didn't "cheat"
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

No I havnt cheated. Its why I took up the game after being disalusioned with the carry ons in other sports I played. When you cheat at golf the only person your realy cheating is yourself.

OK I did tread on an opponents ball once ,but only because he gave me the hump had trouble counting to seven, he always seemed to get stuck when he reached 6 .He always "found " his ball in the woods and talked on my backswing not realy cheating just payback

Sadly yes. I used to automatically give myself putts inside 2ft; but what I can't stand are playing partners who always improve their lie and then tell me how great they hit their shot!!!! But I guess that's my punishment for giving myself putts .....

No. The only person you're cheating is, ultimately, yourself - and everyone knows when you're doing it, you get a reputation.
I recall what Bobby Jones said after he was congratulated for calling a penalty on himself when his ball moved and no-one else saw it.
"You might as well congratulate a man for not robbing a bank."
Your greatest opponent is always yourself - so who is pulling one over on whom?

Am I sounding a bit sanctimonious here? Probably best to stop!

I could lie and say I didnt but back in the day I did once. This was when I was 13 years old and very immature. I dropped a ball when no one is looking since I couldnt find my ball. It was actually kind of funny. I slid the ball down the inside of my pant leg. I felt really bad about it after the tournament. It didnt help me win if I recall. We all make mistakes. Im sure someone will bash me but I know the same person that bashes me has done something probably way worse than dropping a ball.

In the case of golf (as with many other things) ignorance is a good excuse. When I took up golf, I was playing with people who did everything, mulligans improved lies, you name it.

Only later did I realize by being taught that golf had a lot more to offer than pulling off a good shot after a million tries.

NO, but i know a very famous PGA tour player who intentionally broke the rules and was caught out...Vijay Singh. He signed for a wrong score knowingly to try to qualify for an event but was pulled and then banned.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mai...6/soinve16.xml

There is a lot of scope for 'cheating' with the preferred lies season in swing, and im not keen on mulligans either. The only person you are really cheating is yourself.

Also, if you re playing in competition and regularly cheating then that is in effect theft!....one person from my club received a two year ban for cheating.

cant say i havent unfortunately. not something you want to get into the habit of. man, in high school golf, i saw all the tricks. droppping the ball through the pant leg. marking your putt in front of the ball, and when setting the ball down they would move it in front of the marker to give them an extra inch closer to the hole, how dumb. i am not guilty of these ones, but back in high school, if i had a blow up triple, i would say i got double sometimes, but it was rare. i never cheat anymore, its only cheating myself from getting better.

I WISH I could say I NEVER cheated...

When I was younger... playing JV in high school I said "yeah I got a 5" when I knew it was not... only once though and not in a match. But it made me feel like crap all week, especially when someone asked me about beating player X who was varsity. At least the stroke wasn't outcome determinative, but still bad.

I also have had a tendency to occaisionally give myself a 2 1/2-foot par putt... but don't do this anymore as it only hurts when it comes time for a competitive round or a round for money with friends.

I have also played with friends and sometimes we will drop a ball when we never found the original... but this is to speed play and we don't do it unless we are 90%+ sure of where it should be. I don't really consider this cheating, but rather trying to be polite to people behind us...

Since I started keeping my stats and handicap I don't take bad drops or gimmie putts (unless match play).... so about three years.
