I got new MP-57's this winter and was fitted at Golfsmith. They suggested I have the irons made 1/2" longer. I've always made larger that average divots with my irons so I know my margin for error is small when it comes to chunks. Now that the weather has warmed up and I've been able to hit my new babies all I seem to do is chunk them. I'm starting to wonder if it is me or the 1/2" extra length in the shaft. Any thoughts?

A couple of things come to mind.

If I were you, I'd go back to Golfsmith and ask for second opinion from their best fitter. Not all people in the golf industry know what they're doing.

If the best fitter says that they're correctly fit, it could be that you're not used to your new irons. Maybe it'll take a little time to get used to the new set in playing conditions. Everything is new, from the feel of the grip, to the rigidity of the shaft, down to the weight and shape of the club head. Do your MP57s irons have less bounce than your previous set. Perhaps your Mizuno MP57s dig better and make it appear that you're hitting fatter than before.

Is your stance perhaps less "upright" since you were fitted? The nice thing is that you can have them shortened, if needed, but not lengthened.

I was just "custom fit" and ordered clubs 1/2" longer as well. Don't have them yet, so I may have a different opinion soon....

My clubfitter measured my existing clubs and they are 1/2 shorter than standard. Did they make your club 1/2 longer than standard or like me just make you closer to standard? (I know there is debate about what is standard).

I notice that I don't chunk the ball when it is placed 6" inside of where my clubhead is at setup. My posture is consistent so I am thinking that my irons are way too long.

I've always wondered why I play best with rented iron sets when overseas. Now I know why.

Interesting....reason being, I was just fit for clubs myself, and my fitter also recommended 1/2" longer (along with 2 flat). I say interesting because it sounds like you're more of a "digger" and I'm more of a "sweeper"; my divots are never large. I just got them yesterday but I went to the course and just hit irons around trying to get my yardages down and never hit one fat. And, I'm not what you'd consider tall either.

I'm not sure. What I do know is that my new MP57's are indeed approx 1/2" longer than my old Ping i3's that I've used for the last 6 years when I line them up for comparisson.

It's just weird because I wouldn't think an extra 1/2" could cause issues. I'm hoping that it's more an issue of being early in our golf season and not my swing or clubs.

maybe b/c it's so early in the season?
I had a problem hitting chunky shots my 1st 3 rounds...but i got that out now.... have you tried choking down on the club? is the result the same?
when i was working out getting rid of the fat shot...i choked down...and then every day i kept on doing less and less until i was back to the upright position where i'm at now.
but yeah...i wouldn't really trust a golfsmith for 100% proper fitting...i'd spend the $ on a person who specializes in fitting.

Definitely go back to Golfsmith to see if you were truly fit, and if you were just keep practicing with them until you get better. Sometimes when you play with shorter irons you groove your swing to get used to them, and might just need to groove it back to the proper length for your swing and size.

I just got fitted as well at 1/2" over. There is definitely an adjustment period. If you're like me you've spent most of your golf life unconsciously compensating for clubs that are too short and/or too flat. Once you stop doing that, you'll stop hitting it fat.

Try adding a little more spine tilt at address with your long irons. You may have previously created an excessively decending blow with your old irons by keeping your spine vertical at address. The right degree of tilt will help you take the right kind of divot.

My word of advice is to give the new irons sometime at the range and course. For years I was playing with standard length clubs and was hitting the ball fine. A friend of mine suggested I look into buying new clubs if I wanted to take my game to a new level. Well last winter I purchased a new set with a 1/2" longer shaft and went up 2 degrees. Well the first couple of trips the range and course I could have killed him. I never realized that the 1/2" extra on the club could have made such a difference with the way my club came in contact with the ball. Just remember for years you were swinging clubs that in reality were to short for you and now your body and swing has to make the adjusment for the longer club. I hope you stick with it like I did because once you fine tune them the payoff is huge

I just got a new set custom fitted for me with an extra 1/2" in length. I've been hitting them okay for the most part. I do find it a bit more difficult to hit my new irons. In my case, I think the reason is because I am going from a lot of offset to basically none. I'm not sure what adjustment I need to make but I definitely need to give it more time. As for the extra 1/2", try choking down a 1/2" and see if that helps.
