I was checking my e-mail this morning on AOL and I saw a little article about of "lovely" president.

"I didn't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

What do you guys think about this statement?

In some ways, I agree, but in the same sense, perhaps he should be playing. He could really gain from the integrity and responsibility that the game teaches. And as far as sending the wrong signals, playing golf may actually be sending good signals to the public.

Let me know what you guys think.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but he stopped playing golf when the war started, with the key word being STOPPED. It appears his integrity and responsibility stopped about the same time when he decided to become a bully...sorry, my bad, proceed with fight (can't call it a war...it's one sided). For those of you who may argue, it's not a war on terror...Iraq is it's own entity, hence a bully fight.

My point that i'm trying to make is that one does learn about integrity, responsibility, honesty, patience, understanding ones grounds, and doing what's right. With all due respect, if he didnt learn that in all the years he was playing golf, why would he start when he put down the golf stick? I got 100 bucks that says that he takes at least 6 mulligans per round...

I nearly fell out of my cubicle laughing at this... but I don't think it's gonna work!

I read that quote this morning. The guy plays a lot of golf. With apologies to the fourteen year-olds on the forum, why must he so often sound like a fourteen year-old? Supposedly, the presidential handicap is around 15. One article I read also noted that he takes very few mulligans and is mildly fastidious about keeping an accurate score! Also, he's possibly a fan of that crazy speed golf - I've seen it on a couple of retirement development courses - where every player has his/her own cart and roars around the course playing as fast as possible. Did you see Fahrenheit 9/11 ? (I'm not endorsing the film or Michael Moore and have no interest in starting a discussion about it.) There's a clip somewhere in there of the Prez giving a war on terror soundbyte to a bunch of reporters and cameras. When he finishes the line he makes some remark about hitting a shot, turns, addresses his ball and drills one. Not a terrible swing, really, if memory serves.

I'm sorry, but I don't think the man has the ability to learn much more than what he already has. Not that he's an "old dog". I just think the man doesn't listen to reason. . .He's just not too bright. JMO As far as him not playing golf for whatever reason. . .Honestly, does he really have time to worry about playin' some friggin golf?

The more I think about it, ya'll are all right. If he hasn't learned the values of the game yet, then he probably can't and won't. As a matter of fact, I sometimes speculate if he has the capacity to learn anything at all.

I live in Texas and originally really liked him. As a matter of fact, I lived in a small town called McGregor, Texas which is about 15 minutes from Crawford, and that area is basically George Bush fanatics. About the time he stopped playing golf (around 5 years ago) is about the same time I realized he's a complete idiot (sorry if that offends anyone, just my humble opinion ) and I lost all respect for him.

I'm certainly not GWB's biggest fan, but clearly this is a no-win situation for him. Obviously his PR people have figured out that if a single picture of him playing golf gets out, all the bashers would be saying "What an insensitive bastard, out having fun while troops are dying in his war". So he gives up golfing, and now people say "What an idiot - what difference does it make whether he golfs or not?"

Funny how he stops playing golf to support the troops while many soldiers have created ranges where they play golf in Iraq.

Exactly. Anyone high-up in politics is in a no-win situation for just about anything they do. He feels it's right to give up golfing during the war, and he does so. I didn't even realize he had stopped until yesterday.

Even world leaders need some rec time every now and then. With a job like that one, one would think a few hours of unwinding on a golf course would be beneficial. You want a stressed man or relaxed man with the "football"?
Though....giving me access to nuclear (or "nucular" in his case....man that drives me nuts) launch codes after a round of golf might not be a good thing....

It's funny how Bush even lies about this... There are pictures of him playing golf after he so called quit out of respect... He quit the same time he tore a ligament in his knee and had to quit running because of pain... Now it's out of respect for the people killed by this disastrous occupation.... Bush is a sad man. /rant

Funny how your video doesn't actually place him playing golf after he quit out of respect. Or, as they say on other sites, [citation needed].

that video wasn't him playing after, it was him making an ass of himself... Which isn't hard to find...

Bush said he laid down his clubs after the August 2003 bombing of United Nations offices in Baghdad that killed the UN's top official in the country, Sergio Vieira de Mello. "I remember when de Mello got killed as a result of these murderers taking this good man's life. I was playing golf - I think in central Texas - and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, 'It's just not worth it any more'." According to a database held by CBS News the statement is not entirely accurate. He did cut short a round of golf at the 12th hole on that day, but his last recorded game came two months later, October 13.

Bush, 57, will have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) test on Thursday, Dec. 18. The body-scanning device enables doctors to see internal organs in 3D. The MRI is being performed on the advice of the President's regular White House physician. Last summer, Bush suffered a minor muscle tear in his right calf and that injury, along with aching knees, forced him to abandon his running routine. The calf strain healed by August when he had his annual physical, but the president said in September that he suspected he had a meniscus tear.

Great, a video of him making an ass of himself... but it is implied in your first post that the video was an image of him playing golf after claiming to give it up.

The link does make the claim that he played after the August 2003 bombings, in which he allegedly quit. It's based on hearsay, but for an internet discussion, I'd say it's close enough. It doesn't contain the quote that followed it, which spoke of injuries he has had in his late 50s.

It's fine. Even if you had said the first time "I remember seeing that he played two months later" it would have been fine. Pretty much, unless you're in a debate, we're usually OK when you're just stating an opinion or memory. You just stumbled into one of my pet peeves (link/reference mismatch) is all. I hope I didn't startle you too much.
