Tax rebate checks are coming and I have decided that instead of throwing it into the bank I'm going to use it like it was intended and spend it. Looking into a new driver as my R7 has definitely seen better days. I'm looking at the $300 line of drivers. A few of them have caught my eye. I'm a lefty with a pretty quick swing and I ALWAYS play a power fade (only because my natural swing allows me to do so), and would like a fair amount of forgiveness. Some different models I have been looking at:

Ping G10
Cobra Speed
Taylow Made SuperQuad
Cleveland HiBore XLS
Nike Sumo 5000
Callaway Hyper X

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't bought a driver in a long time so I have no idea who has what technology.

just went to demo day and replaced my r7 with a cobra l4v......i have never hit a club with this much technology......it goes high, long, and straight.....i had a bunch of other people hit it too and three of my friends bought it within two weeks......it is $400 though but it's worth even more than that

and i wouldn't suggest the superquad if you want a change from the r7, they feel they same, the superquad is just a lot pretter, the new burners are also really good along with the new nikes(sq and reg) and the hibore xls

I went to the local Golf Galaxy and demo'ed a couple on my list. I tried the Callaway Hyper X 10.5* reg shaft and a Ping G10 9* reg shaft and I can definitely say that any 9* driver is off the list. I have a low ball flight as-is and the results were drastically different. In the simulator I averaged 267 yards with the Callaway and a measly 181 with the G10. Everything off the G10 was a low line drive and did not suit me well.

I would have bought the Callaway right then and there but a couple things prevented me from doing so.
1. The simulator showed me a left to right ball flight. I've never hit a draw in my life yet 80% of my swings were doing that. Not sure if it was the simulator or the club or me.
2. I didn't really care much for the feel of the Callaway. It didn't very good feedback and didn't really feel powerful at impact.

I'm not unhappy with my Taylor Made by any means. My R7 has actually treated me extremely well. The problem is I bought it used at the beginning of last season for $119 (when they were still selling for $300) which tells you a lot about the condition it was in. It lasted me through a season but it's definitely seen better days. There's chips all over the crown, the sole is dented and the face has deep scratches in it.

I'm going to go back and try out a couple more when I have time.

The only club in my bag I'm consistently confidant in is my 10.5* TM Burner with a stiff shaft. Feels (and sounds) great and gives me lots of right to left distance.

I hit a Burner a little while back and wasn't a big fan of it; granted I only got to hit it in the simulator and my swing had a few flaws that needed fixing.

You say you get good right to left distance with the Burner. Does the fact that we're opposite dexterities have anything to do with this? I mean it's the same ball flight and it's making contact the same way, but I'm not sure if it yields the same results. If it's a good club for working that way, though, I will definitely give it another look.

Try the original tour edge. I bought a new old stock off ebay and I just knock the crap out of it. I travel a lot and get a fair amount of testing in and this is the driver I found to be the longest and still pretty forgiving. I also own an R7(which I really don't care for) and a Nike sasquatch with the nexti face which I find to be pretty long and even more forgiving than my tour edge. The new Nikes I tried were aprox. 8 to 12 yards shorter than my old one. The tour edge is aprox. 10 to 15 yards longer than my Nike but I like the set up and feel better. Good luck buying a new driver has always been a frustrating experience for me.

I just bought a Nickent 4dx tour spec. Not on your list but might be worth checking out. The ball seems to jump off the face and the club feels great in my hands. I can't say I have gained 20+ yards over my ping g5 but I have gained a few yards. Price is right too, particularly on ebay.

Good luck with your search.

I wouldn't trade it in! I have an r7 460 and it is the best club that I have hit. I have tried some newer drivers (burner, g10, cgb max) and none worked as well as my r7. It is the most consistent club in my bag.

I've hit the Hibore XLS and Hibore XL and I can't tell the difference. So I bought the XL and saved me $200+ which I used to buy some new hybrids and a new golf bag.

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
