I went through a phase in my game where I couldn't hit my driver at all. I might as well teed off with a 7 iron because it would go further. I watched a video and the instructor said you should drive with what you can hit and that club may not be your driver. Grant it, by going with that mentality you may never learn how to hit your driver. I don't think it is weird at all.

I agree with Munkey. I dont think it is weird at all. This whole season I have been struggling with my driver and I have basically taken it out of play. I tee off with my 3 and 5 wood. I cant make good contact on the ball with my driver so I am not getting any distance out of it. My 3 and 5 wood on the other hand are much easier for me to hit and I usually keep it in play much further then if I had sliced or shanked my driver.

I think one of my problems is that I have too much pride to accept the fact that I can't hit a club as well as a want to on a consistent basis, so I keep pulling out the driver when I know I shouldn't just to boost my ego. The problem is, after I hit the ball it usually gets me more frustrated because I know I could've hit my 5 wood better.

Not at all. I have played with scores of guys who do better without a driver in their hands - and I don't mean accuracy.

Leave your Driver at home.

Just try it. See what happens. If anybody asks, just say that you were cleaning it and it went off in your hand.... I mean, you were cleaning it and you left it on the couch. Or just say you are trying a new "training" technique. Everybody else has weird training repetoires so why not you?

Give it a try. You can't make prideful mistakes if you eliminate the temptation, right?

You may be closer to your optimal launch angle and spin rate with your five wood due to a combination of loft and swing. As your swing improves your launch angle and spin rate for your driver should also improve, and you should start seeing more distance out of it.

I had the same problem with my last set of clubs. No matter what I did, I could not hit my driver well at all. I changed the way I gripped the club, my stance, as well as my technique. Nothng seemed to work for me. I would get so frustrated that I didn't even like the look or feel of my club. I thought it might be a mental thing, so I tried different drivers whenever I would play. I found the right driver and had it made just right for me. Now i love the way the club feels. My hits have never been straighter or gone farther.

      I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.

      The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.

      Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
