I wouldn't switch over to Nike unless they're unbelievable..but I was just speaking to Jim from theironfactory since they'll be refinishing my clubs. he was telling me about Tiger's new clubs that he was working on before the open.
He said the new Victory club line is basically a Mizuno MP-32 with a big V on them.

Does anyone have pics on these? I'm just curious.

Why is it that many people don't like nike equipment?

Good question. I love the Nike line. Personally I hit the Mizuno MP-32's better than I hit the CCi Forged which is why I switched. But I did just pick up a brand spanking new sumo 3 wood.

Because they basically bought their way into the golf industry (Tiger Woods, Tom Stites, massive marketing, etc.) and when they first started, their equipment probably wasn't on par with some of the more well-established golf companies.

Also, in every niche sport with passionate players, there is always the perception of "core" (in it for the love of the game) vs. non-core (in it for the money). Hence, the persistant rumors that their best gear is not actually made by them (Tiger's irons forged by Miura, etc.) But the bottom line is that Nike does make quality golf gear. And if it fits your game, there is no reason not to play it.

I've never hit Nike clubs well, I've tried a few too. Not just one. That's why I don't really like them. The golf balls a decent though.

And

THAT is a 100% legitimate reason to not like/play them - they don't work for you. (^^^ not sarcasm)

nothing wrong with Nike...But their marketing & branding by major sports icons is what it is. when I started playing golf, I was "that" guy that was like..oh well can I hit what Tiger hits. I thought Nike was the be all end all b/c of how they marketed the clubs. fast forward to the present...i just can't see spending the $ they ask for on their clubs that...while they're good, I'd rather spend on Mizuno, Miura, Henry Griffits... established club manufacturers that offer...in my opinion a more superior club...for a cheaper price.

I just don't prefer their clubs. from the drivers to the irons...i haven't liked one that I've tried.

but I'm still curious to see what the Victory line looks like.

You could say the same thing about Mizuno (Mizuno is more of a general sporting goods company than purely a golf company), but thats no reason to not at least give Nike a chance.

But the bottom line is that Nike does make quality golf gear.

I agree. I dont think that Nike is the best (I wouldnt say they are in the same league as Titleist, Callaway and Ping), but at the very least they are average.

And if it fits your game, there is no reason not to play it.

I agree. Who cares what brand of gear the pros play or what the marketing hype says. If it works for you, go with it.

True, but Mizuno has been in the golf industry a lot longer, so people tend to view them differently. Eventually, Nike will be in the same category. (Humans have very short memories.)

And they will only get better. Say anything you want about the corporate parent, but I don't know anyone who would deny that Tom Stites is one of the top club designers working in the world today.

And with regard to the "purists' " view of Titleist - almost everyone knows that Titleist is owned by Acushnet, which owns FJ, Cobra, Pinnacle, and Titleist. But many are not aware that Acushnet is just a division of the multi-national Fortune Brands conglomerate, which owns Moen faucets, Master Lock, Waterloo tools, Kitchencraft, Jim Beam bourbon, Courvoisier, Starbuck's Liqueurs, and many other products completely unrelated to golf. Hardly the "core" company that many people who consider themselves "golf purists" would like to think they are. Does that mean their product isn't every bit as good as others that are out there? No, of course not.

Yep, exactly. If I could get the ball down the fairway straight and long every time with a USGA conforming driver from 7-11, you can bet it would be in my bag. But there will always be those who are concerned about name brand and image. And if it gives them more confidence, which in turn improves their game, more power to them.

The biggest knock against Nike is that they do not make clubs for a better player market. Other brands have a wider variety of clubs for people of all skill levels where it seems like recently Nike has only been chasing the higher handicap market. Hopefully these new clubs will be their successful launch into the better player market, although i think it will be difficult based on their reputation as a higher handicap geared brand.

Nike did have some "players clubs." Well sort of, Pro Combo forged. And of course the blades. But you are right all of the new clubs besides the cci seem to be geared at high handicaps.
I am looking forward to this new line.

I would think that because of all the money that Nike has that they would be able to put that towards all the R + D in the world and come up with a superior product. Just my opinion.

I had the Callaway Big Bertha irons but switched to the Nike slingshots because they were 100x easier for ME to hit. I can see however how low handicappers would not like them because it is true that they are geared towards high handicappers. I look at it this way...Nike should be congratulated for gearing most of their products towards high handicappers and introducing people to the game...more $ for golf! If I was just getting started on the game and had no idea about golf equipment would I go with Titleist or Nike...well IMO that person would probably go with Nike for the name alone because Nike is such a well known name.

looking real Mizuno-ish...

I heard Tiger was supposed to be promo'ing the Victory line...but with him being out till next year....they're probably gonna start to develop another series in their new "players'" line to debut when he comes back.... but my rep at Nike wouldn't confirm this.

Maybe they will and maybe they wont.

It depends upon how active of a role Fortune Brands takes in the day to day operations of Acushnet. A lot of investment firms invest in companies and have a very hands-off approach. They invest in a certain company that is successful and just sit back and make money off of that company.

I agree and thats exactly the reason why Nike is willing to pay Tiger so much money.

Nike pays Tiger money. True.

I just hope that Nike replaces their CCi's with something. I'm going to get fit at Hotstix at Doral in October and I want to check out what they come out with.

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
