I'm in the market for a gps golf gizmo. Not sure which one to get. Does anyone know if they make one that keeps track of your distances. Like if I hit a 4 iron, can I indicate that on the device then later retrieve all my 4iron shots and analyze my club distances?

Can I download my round onto my computer and see where I screwed up? Does anyone know if you can superimpose the data, on to a course map, and get a bird's eye view of the round?

How sturdy are the devices? Field tested waterproof?

Thanks in advance for any info.

This is the only GPS that I know of that comes close to data collection:

http://www.sureshotgps.com/sureshotgps.php
Sureshotgps™ can keep a record of your average driving distance for up to 14 clubs. It can then use this distance to make club recommendations during normal play if this feature is enabled under the Features / Clubs / Enable clubs menu. There are two ways in which you can teach Sureshotgps™ what your average driving distance is for each club. 1) Measure your drive and calibrate on Sureshotgps™. To use this feature, select the Features / Clubs / Measure Clubs option. You will be asked the club you wish to calibrate and can use the left and right arrows to cycle through the various clubs. When your selected club is shown press the left soft key (marked 'Select') and follow the instructions to record the initial ball position, make your shot and record the final ball position. The distance struck will be shown and you can use the centre soft key (marked 'Save') to record this inside Sureshotgps™. You can repeat this procedure for all other clubs by using the arrow keys to select the each successive club and following the calibration procedure. As you calibrate each club the data is automatically stored inside Sureshotgps™. 2) Enter the distances in the Windows software provided 'Sureanalysis™' and download them to Sureshotgps™. This is the easiest option if you know pretty well what distances you can strike with each club and don't need to measure them on the golf course. Connect Sureshotgps™ to Sureanlysis™ as normal and press the User Setup button. On the right side of the screen you will see a table that allows you to type in distances for up to 14 clubs. Sureanalysis™ can even estimate your club distances and populate each club with distances struck by an average golfer.

Some of the GPS units out there can measure shot distances, but only one at a time. I just bought a GolfLogix device. So if I hit a normal full swing with my 7 iron, i usually know if it was a good average swing. Then I press the distance measure button while still on the tee. I then walk to the ball and it will tell me my distance. Rinse and Repeat.

If you want to do this with multiple balls on the same iron, fire off 10 good shots. If you are consistent, they should cluster around one area, choose the one you think represents the average... not the furthest, not the closest. Measure that. It should be good enough. If your balls don't cluster, then you are not consistent enough yet to be worrying about exact distances.

Golf Gps devices are mainly used for measuring distances to greens, hazards, doglegs and the like so you can choose your club wisely and not get yourself into trouble. The most important factor (in my opinion) in selecting such a GPS is going to the website and making sure they have the courses you play, and want to play all mapped.

For me only GolfLogix had every course I've ever played mapped, thats why I picked them. Plus the GolfLogix is based on the Etrex H, which is a completely waterproof GPS. I think it is IPX7 rated http://www8.garmin.com/footnotes/IEC_60529_IPX7.html

This is a nice feature if you use a trolley like me, and sometimes forget that when you let it go it will start rolling towards the nearest lake! :)

IMHO, in the spirit of the game this crap should be outlawed.

They are only allowed (as far as I know) because there was a time you could not avoid them with a cart rental.
That's not a valid reason to change the venerable "Rules of Golf".
Weren't there something like 6 original rules in the 15th Century?

Knowing the actual distance to a tenth of a meter is not an entitlement.
Even the pros have to sometimes say, "Screw it, give me the six."

All the courses around here have done away with GPS on carts because there wasn't any payback in increased play.

Your honor, I rest my opinion based case.

I'm still waiting for someone to come out with ScoreCard as an iPhone app. :) Ahem...

Whereby we could use the iphone 3G's built in GPS to at least measure how far we hit, and to keep track of our scores during a round. :)

IMHO, in the spirit of the game this crap should be outlawed.

Technology changes all sports. No more wooden rackets in tennis. Metal woods in golf. Bigger club heads in drivers. Able to tell distance perfectly. How about the laser telling a tennis player whether a serve is in or out? There is nothing wrong with knowing the distance to the pin. Nobody is telling you, that you must use it. If you like to "feel your distance", that is entirely up to you. But you cannot knock someone for wanting to use the technology. Balls fly further and spin more. I use a GPS, but the person I play with normally does not. It has never affected his game he says, but he usually gets caught checking it out every now and then.

Excuse me but I think I just did.

It's a crutch.

I'd use a laser rangefinder (if I had 400 bucks) because the courses I play at have only basic yardage and many (who have rangefinders) tell me that the accuracy varies

Ive hit great shots before and have them come up short because I have no idea how far I am, I play a lot of golf on feel and by judging distance based on eyesite which has actually made me a better player

The GPS portion of sureshot sucks... most courses they have loaded are only green point dimensions and distances.

But with sureshot you can add your own hazards into the system and you can map the course yourself if the is not one available.

Wow! You are in grayling michigan? I go up there once a year for Canoeing and Golfing! In face the Fox Run Golf course up there is one of the main reasons I went with GolfLogix, they are one of the few gps providers who have that course and all the others I play mapped.

Excuse me but I think I just did.

I dont see how knowing the correct distances is a crutch. But hey, if you would like to go on feel and guessing, that is up to you. I am glad it works for you though.

Excuse me but I think I just did.

I can see that point of view also. I guess a real purist would say remove the on course markers and also outlaw yardage books/scorecard maps.

I guess if I never had any of those toys I'd probably get much better at estimating distance. Currently, i can't tell 150 from 170, I'm an awful judge of distance.
