Alright so this is my first year playing golf in high school, but I'm also a senior. That means i have to play varsity. That means i HAVE to try out. My family is going on vacation during tryouts. Needless to say they won't change the try out date.

My mom is making my go on vacation. Now I'm almost 18 years old and i really just want to tell her to go (for lack of a better work) fornicate herself. I think its really stupid. I just started this summer and I golfed about 5 times a week to try and make the team. Now I won't be able to even try out for the team.

I'm about 90% sure i would make the team. I now shoot high-40's to low 50's everytime i go out. (on a 72.5 rating course). Now if i didnt make the team I'd feel like shit for not going on vacation with my family, but i told my mom they wouldn't change the tryout date for ONE PERSON. Of course she blew this off because she thinks I'm stupid.

I think I'm going to stay home and try to make the team. I've spent almost all my summer earnings(650 every 2 weeks) on golf.

Do you think it would be wrong to stay home and try to make the team?

Not at all, its your last year to play school golf, you have a shot for the team. How many times are you going to go on vacation in the near future, you have years to do that. This is your last chance, Don't miss it.

Although you are giving up a blast somewhere out of your state or city.

Yeah i was really excited for this vacation, too.

We are going into the mountains to go ATV'ing, white water rafting, and(you guessed it) golfing. We are staying in a full condo with my parents and my grandparents. It's got 3 flat screens, its own indoor pool, and various other goodies.

Oh jeez now you list the good stuff, you make a tough choice now. I mean... It depends what your team is like. I was excited for mine, but it turned out to be a big joke. Its just golfing a few tournaments as a team, and again.. it is just golf...but with teammates.

I think I just completely changed my answer. But think about both

Let your mom know how much the tryout mean to you. Emphasize that family vacation together is also important, but an opportunity for tryout comes only this time for you. Tell her than you're gonna do your best and hopefully you'll make the team. As far as the family vacation goes, you'll make up for it such as cook them dinner when they come back, do dishes or something along those lines.

I wish you good luck!

Vacations are nice but playing High School golf is really fun memories. I'm going to be a Junior, and I've played varsity as a freshman. It wasn't always great at times (you know, the seniors with the freshman) but it's memories I'll always remember with some guys way older than me.

For you, it'll be one year you can enjoy...you should stick to the tryouts.

Oh i forgot to mention that i skipped out on playing my senior year of football. I would have been the starting linebacker for my HS team. We went to state last year, and lost but still.

So if i go I miss out on my senior year of football AND golf.

do some research on your team, see how competitive it is, guarantee you can make it. And see how involved the team gets in tournaments and other activities.

You may be greatly dissapointed and regret not going on vacation. I know I was excited for my team but we only went in one tournament and it was So easy to make. It sucked.

3 of the players on varsity are getting scholarships to golf. We just moved from 2A to 1A making this season even better. We are going to make state this year.

I would be shooting for the #5 or 6 spot on varsity which i should be able to make. The #4 slot is a JV player who shoots high to mid 40's. I'm at a point that I'm shooting high-40's to low 50's. Last year a friend of mine missed over 10 days of school for tournaments.

I suggest talking to the golf coach. Maybe play a round or two with him in advance of the trip or after. Try to negotiate an alternative. If you can exhibit commitment and the game to play, I am sure he would reserve a spot. Just be honest with the guy. If he doesnt appreciate that, you probably wont like playing for him anyway.

What school?

(Just curious...I am in IL too).

I, to this day, deeply regret not taking up my Dad's suggestion to join my high school golf team.

I usually wouldn't advocate going against your parents. As a parent of 3, I look back at times when I challenged my parents and regret it. However, also as a parent, I would recognize the opportunity and the predicament you are in.

I say try out for the team and when you make it rich, buy your parents a vacation :)

Seriously, I would definately stay back from the vacation and try out for the team. But I would do my utmost to do so without challenging my parents. I would keep a cool head and do my best to rationalize my decision with my parents.

Good luck! To both keeping things kosher at home and making the team.

I second what Julius says.

You see, family is important and your Mom may see this as the last opportunity for you all to spend some quality vacation time together. Once you go to college, your lifestyle will most likely change. You may have to spend the next summer working full time in order to pay bills, for example. If the HS coach is reasonable, and you talk with him about your situation while showing him full respect, there's a good chance he'll bend the rules for you. Let us know how it turns out.

We've called the coach and the athletic director of my school and they can't make any exceptions. I think it's kind of stupid that I can't have the tryout by myself another day if the coach is willing.

Small town school. Coal City High School.

I third this as the bologna guy has already seconded it.....

Either way you decide....you're going to have some level of regret.
