Pele is FIFA's choice.
Globally, internet denizens voted Maradona.
Personally I think. George Best ranks there.
As a soccer purist its Maradona even though he had a hand (which I do not condone - thats cheating) in the defeat of England in the infamous "hand of God" shenanagin.

He won games "singlehanded" at times and transformed clubs that he played on to champions. So Maradona it is for me IMHO.

Ronaldo, Pele, Maradona...

In Brasil there are many other players in the barios that are fantastic that will never get the opportunity to play.

For those that say Ronaldo, you have to be kidding, he is like Beckham, yes he was a great player, but now he is nothing.

But OT I would say it is hard to choose between the two, but I think the way that Pele controlled the pitch and such makes him the greatest ever.

Here's what I play:

Maradonna had a few years when he was unstoppable, but with his failed drugs tests there will always be a question mark about him.

Pele .Never played for any of the top European sides against the best players in the world week in week out.In his era it would have been in Spain or Italy. His World Cup expliots make him one of the greats, but the greatest ? No

Best, a genius ,would top everyones list if he had played in World cups.

Gordon Banks ,goalkeepers are always overlooked in these sort of polls .Banks was the Greatest Goalkeeper

Just for the hell of it who would you replace out of this lot

Banks (ENG)
Cesar (BRAZ) Moore (ENG) Costerquirta (SPA) Maldini (ITA)

Jarizino (BRAZ) Creuff (HOL) Maradona (ARG) Best (N.IRE)

Pele (BRAZ) Henry (FRA)

who cares? does anyone actually watch this "sport"? It looks more like a diving contest than a sport...

That was harsh, but I have always wondered, and I wanted to post but I wanted to do it respectfully...

What, to you, is the draw to football/soccer? Does it bug you ever that it's so low scoring? Wouldn't it be better if it wasn't? Is it satisfying to watch a game for many hours and see a 0-0 game, or maybe one goal?

I'm not a fan of it really, but I'm pretty sure its the most popular sport in the world.

Check out the viewing figures for world cups.

Remember outside the US most people would say who cares about the NFL or MLB!

Are you guys for real?

Soccer is by no means my favourite sport. But it beats the hell out of the like of baseball or american football.
It lasts 90 mins (usually) and can be played in about 110 mins including half time. American football lasts 60 mins and takes like 4 hours to play a game at the top level (from what I've seen) And baseball seems to take forever (literally). In soccer there isn't a break between each 'play', unlike american football. And here comes the key element of why soccer > american football+baseball. In American football one 'team' has a attacking team, a defensive team and special teams. In baseball when your team is at bat, there are at most 3 of your players on the field at any time. In soccer, the whole team attacks, the whole team defends and you don't stop after you make a successful pass. It is end to end stuff and, although it may not be high scoring, there are loads of chances in a game. Its not like if a game ends 1-0 that there was only one chance in the entirle match, there might have been 15 shots on target. The keeper was just on form.

So those are my thoughts on the matter (however inarticulate they may have seemed). Don't take them to be representative of soccer fans everywhere.

And oh yeah! the padding American footballers wear is ridiculous! Yeah, they're big guys, but so are rugby players...

What's the point of comparing them (other than someone made a stupid comment....of course people care.)? They're two totally different games....

I'm comparing them because someone (two people, really) asked how can people like soccer. And when someone asks a question, I'm inclined to try and answer.

With no mention of American rules football or baseball....

Anyway, they're not really comparable.
