Player's Clubs - how do you determine who should play them?

I'm shopping for new clubs and I've noticed something strange. Everytime I go into a golf store and ask to try out a set of clubs (e.g., Mizuno MP-60, Ben Hogan Apex FTX, Cleveland CG2, Taylor Made RAC LT, Titleist 735.CM), I'm asked what my handicap is. When I tell them my handicap (I shoot in the high 80's), I'm told that I should try something else.

Is handicap the best/only way to determine what clubs you should play? My problem hasn't been with my irons, but rather my driver/woods and poor wedge play. I actually hit my irons consistently and straight.

Any thoughts?

Remind them that the consumer is always right.

If you're serious about the game, better clubs will make you better. I think you're fine to be asking for what you're looking for. I STARTED learning with muscle-back blades (some old MacGregors), but I was dedicated. Tell them you know what you want, and why, and don't take too much crap. If they keep pushing you onto something else, leave.

I would agree with this. Especially pay note to the last four words. If you're serious about your game and are looking to get better, then buy better clubs. It is very possible to outgrow the cavity-backed clubs in a short amount of time if your improve your game about 5-7 shots from where you are now.
