It means that if you miss a "green in regulation" (i.e., you are not on the green in par minus 2), but you still make par or better on the hole.

Up = chipping/pitching/hitting onto the green
Down = putting into the hole.

However, it still counts as an "Up and Down" if you hole out from chip/pitch/approach.

A "sand save" is the same thing, but from a greenside bunker.

Not trying to be argumentative, but IMO "up and down" is anytime a player chips/pitches onto the green and makes the putt but there is no necessity that it be for par or better.

I agree; anytime there is one chip and one putt, it is an up and down; though the ones for pars are much nicer

Actually the best ones are for birdies....

(I'd have said eagle, but an up and down for eagle is a rare bird )

what about putting in from the fringe for a double bogey, or lagging from the fringe, tap-in for triple? Up and down?

The other day I was left of the green in 2 on a par 5. I pitched over the green in 3. I got the 4th one caught in the grass and left it short of the green. I chipped the 5th one in for par. It was ironic being able to give myself an up-and-down and have zero putts on a hole I made 2 errors on.

I think the Harry is correct in saying that it must be for par or better.

Hmmm. I'm not sure where we could look for a definitive definition of "up and down", but I was always taught that "up and down" (as I described it above) and "sand save" were the two components of the "Scramble" statistic.

I'm going to have to vote that it means par also.....

I'v enever heard anyone get a "good up and down", without actually getting par.... JMHO.....

It's still up and down. It's also still a poor score.

Up and down is getting up and down... what it's for is meaningless. I've had really good up and downs for a bogey... and glad of the fact. Why in the world would it have to be for a par????

One "up" onto the green, two "down" into the hole, regardless of whether it's for par or not, imo.

This is from About.com:

Up and Down
By Brent Kelley, About.com

GolfDefinition: To get the ball into the hole in two strokes when starting from off the green or in a greenside hazard. Say your second shot on a par-4 is just short of the green. If you make par , you've made an up-and-down. Think of it this way: the first stroke was up onto the green; the second stroke was down into the cup.
Also Known As: Make and up-and-down, get up and down

Mkay, I thought it was just the pitch part of it.

Cause I am definitely having problems with that, lost at least 10 strokes today from coming just short of a green on my third shot (I never hit GIR, unless its a par 3 or a tiny par 4, not a long enough hitter.)

Thanks for the info.

FWIW - clipped & pasted from Golf Digest ScoreCard 4.0 (software to track scores, handicap index, fairways hit, GIRs, putts, 3-putts, sand saves, up & downs and probably a few other statistical categories) Glossary:

Up and Down
This term applies to the holes on which a golfer reaches the green with a greater than regulation number of strokes, but is able to one-putt the hole.

For me & my stat keeping, up and down is from inside 50 yards. My shortest full swing club goes 60 yards. So I like to know how many times I get "up and down" on those short game touch shots. I think it depends on how you personally want to track your short game performance.

This is from About.com:

And the score that you put in bold is just for that particular example. That "definition" doesn't say that it

has to be for par, just that the example works out that way. Getting up and down is holing out in 2 strokes when your ball begins somewhere off the green.... one shot gets you up on the green, and the second gets you down in the hole. That's all it can possibly mean. In my 35 years of playing the term has been used a few thousand times in my presence, but they weren't all for par. It's very common for someone to say "If I can get this up and down, I'll save a bogey." Or the obverse, "I have a chance to get up and down for a birdie!" I will admit that the phrase is normally used to refer to a shot played from somewhere near the green, but nothing about it says that you can't get "up and down" from 200 yards out.

You may be right. I personally haven't heard it unless it was associated with par. Anyone have a definitive on this?

    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
