I just wanted to toss this out there to you guys for some feedback.

First off, the irons I am trying to buy are for my daughter. She is 14 and 5'9" and still growing. She has been playing golf for 4 seasons now and has played in a number tournaments and is about a 19 HDCP right now...mainly because of her short game needing improvement. She has a very good swing and swing speed is ~65mph with a 7 iron. there is still alot of room for increase in speed as well as she swings very easy. She has decided to pour more effort into it this year to improve her game and play on a couple of the local tournament trails.

My problem arises in trying to get her irons. Doing all the measurments that are required for fit, and the local golf shops all say she should be playing a mens standard length shaft. I can see that as she is tall and getting taller. The problem is the flexes of the shafts and quality of club

I have a chance to get her a set of new Mizuno MX 23's for a steal. THe irons are graphite shaft with the Exsar Blue shaft in mens R flex. After putting the shaft on a frquency machine they test out a bit softer, which is ok with me.

Question is, what do you think of the MX 23's for her? Are they TO MUCH club? Is the R flex ok for her? I dont want to buy her cheap stuff that may hinder her in trying to improve. Would rather get her top quality and have her work on fundamentals to play better. I hear they are a forgiving iron...forgiving enough for her?

Thanks

John

Take her to a clubmaker and let him/her help you out with your decision. That is their job. Not too many people that work in proshops really know enough about equipment to help you. Also there is no such thing as standard in golf equipment.

I like the Mizuno mx line and I also considering getting a set for my 14 year old son. I am considering the mx 25 but the mx 23 are similar style irons. My questions is similar to yours regarding the shaft type, graphite vs light weight steel, length and flex.

I am wondering what factor the weight of the shaft has with our selection of irons. I found out that Dynamic Golf regular steel shafts weight about 127 grams, Dynalite SL shaft are about 104 grams and Nippon golf shaft are about 100 grams and under vs graphite shafts that are about 65 - 95 grams.

I keep hearing graphite is not recommended for our kids development of higher swing speed in a couple of years, but who knows, maybe the club fitter?

I am going to the club fitter and get him and swing check out to see what works best for his golf swing.

She has an appointment with a fitter next week. I definately think the graphite is the way to go with her, being a girl, as shee can benefit from the reduced weight to generate some more club head speed.

My real question is the MX line...are they forgiving enough to asssit with off-center hits? I want her to get away from huge GI iron and start playing something that will make her respond to the impact but also allow her a small margin of error as she learns.

The MX line is a huge GI iron. They are the most forgiving irons in Mizuno's line. The 23s were sold as "the most forgiving irons Mizuno has ever made" when they were new. Now that tag line goes to the MX100.

"R" shaft flex is for a swing speed of 75-90mph, so that would probably work fine for now, and certainly in the near future.

I've never hit MX23s so I can't say anything about them specifically. But I will say the reason I bought my MX900s was 1) they felt great (forged) and 2) everything I read and heard about them lead me to believe they were forgiving but not so forgiving that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a good or bad shot. If I miss the sweet spot, they let me know, but it still ends up being a decent shot. If the MX23s are similar, they are probably exactly what you're looking for.

Hey, I live in whitby too, just thought I would mention that.

What about the Cleveland CG Red? I hear there good, and I dont think they are like the other GI's if GI's at all.

as you said, she is a bogey golfer with a 19 handicap. If you want to buy her irons, i would reccomnd getting a lighter steel shaft, with a regular or senior flex...i mean come on, you dont need to get her fitted, its not like shes a pro yet. Both tiger and AK grew up playing irons that were too heavy and stiff for them, and look where thay are now. I would only reccomend spending the money on getting fit if she were a serious golfer who needs to play equipment that is to all of her specs. I consider myself a serious golfer, and even i dont have fitted clubs, why?...well im still growing(near the end) and im getting stronger, the last thing i want to do is spend money on getting fitted, and then have to get fitted again next year because im taller and stronger. Makes sence to me.

To ME they are huge SGI irons but thats because i only play blades or something very close to them. So to answer your question the MXs are forgiving(keep in mind that this is compared to a blade for me). They are better than other GI clubs because of things like being forged. The MX line is minimally workable but for a beginner this should be no problem. Hope this helps a little.

the mx line is great i'm an 8 and i play the mx 19 the mx 23 are forged like the mx 25 and are forgiving enough but aren't a huge iron there a normal size and have great feel but i think the question is if she hits high or low if she hits high the mx 23 will be good but if she hits a low ball try her in the mx 19 there 540 dollars right now so there not to expensive

I currently play MP-32s with DGs so I prefer steel shafts. In the past, I also owned MX-23s with steel shafts and loved them. I found them very forgiving and the feel is just so solid (although not as soft as my blades). I found them pretty workable as well. If she has a good swing, she should have no problem with the 23s. I'm not sure how well the shafts would fit since only a fitter could tell but don't think of them as cheap stuff-they are high quality irons.

There are 3 irons in the MX line.

The 200's , 100's and 950's I believe.

I haven't hit the 950's , they are a combo set with hybrids in the long irons. I assume these are at least if not more forgiving than the 100's.

I would compare the MX 100's with most other companies GI irons.

The MX 200's are a GI iron, but not as forgiving as the 100's.

They are not as forgiving as most other GI irons out there. For one, they are anywhere between 3-6mm shorter on the blade length (85mm), most other GI irons are around 90.

With the 100's you'll also get more offset, they kept the offset minimal in the 200's.

Also, the 200's don't launch the ball sky high like most of the others, i'm assuming because the sole isn't as wide, which puts less weight below the ball.

I would say she could play either, but i'm guessing the 100's might be better as they'll help her get the ball higher and also be more forgiving.
