What are your thoughts of Lance's return to try to win an eighth Tour de France in 2009. You think he'll succeed?

He inspired me to get back in shaped on his run for the 6th and 7th and actually stucked to a 20 mile/day regimen. But 2006 I lax a little on cycling after the Floyd Landis snafu. I am hoping that he succeeds and inspire younger kids to someday compete in this sport. Although, I think he needs to stop hanging out with them Olson twins to keep that positive image.

Cyclist/triathlete here........

I'm a big fan of Lance's, but the "unretirement" thing is starting to get old with some of these guys (Brett Favre as another current example). It'll be an interesting sidebar to watch, but I don't think he'll be competitive......and I just don't see him as a domestique.

I don't think he'll win, but it's probably good for the sport that he's back in it.

I ride, and miss it a lot right now. I've put on more than a few pounds since by bike was put back on the rack for the snow and ice.

glad to see some other cyclists on the forum.

I'm a big fan of cycling, and a former Cat. 3 racer. I don't ride very much anymore, but I still follow the sport, with or without Lance.

I'm not a big fan of un-retirement "comebacks", but with Lance, it feels a little different. I don't think he'll win the Tour d'France, in fact... I think he's since gone on to say that he wants to support Alberto. I'm pretty sure he would like to win the Giro in May, and he might have a better chance there... it's hard to say... It's a really mountainous course, so it will probably depend on his climbing legs.

I follow him on Twitter, it's always cool to get his updates... just too bad about his TT bike.

Cheers, Allan

I think the thing to remeber with him, is that his main goal is not to win all the races he is in this year. He is trying to share his story and bring awarness to global cancer. having said that though he did a grate job at tour de cali 9th place wow. he helped astana win the team too. He will be a force in france but i dont think he will win, he will win a few stages and make a few people worry when he pulles away. The man will win at lest one race before he is done though you can count on that.

Road and touring cyclist here. Not into racing or much peleton group riding. Like to go with one other rather than large groups. Great road cycling here on the Saanich Peninsula, so I am lucky.

Did a bicycle tour myself (supported by my wife in a morothome) across Canada in 2003. Total of 7700kms riding over 58 cycling days, averaging about 134 km/day at 25 km/hr.

I think its funny he hasnt been exposed. For those of us in the cycling community, and I mean on a personal relationship with the insiders, Lance is no Saint guys. He makes A-ROD look innocent.

Wow... Pretty impressive. I used to want to do that but the desire has Lin since faded away.

Another BC'er, welcome to the forum

You people keep saying he is a dopper but there is one problem with that. He has never had a positive test for any band substance. He is tested more then any other person in sports. The ICU showed up at his house on thanksgiving and said give blood or dont ride. Thy dont do that for any other ride, he gives blood after every stage of every race no other rider dose that. He is clean and all the haters out there need to realized that his is just a freak of nature and will never be broken down. And another thing everyone on his case now including paul kimmage need to shut up!!! he is biking to bring awarness to global cancer, cycling is what he dose best and he wanted to do his best to stop cancer. What kind of person dose that make you when you want to bring down someone that is fighting with all his power to stop something as horrabile as cancer. Go talk to the persons in your life with cancer and see what thy think about lance and his comeback, he is an inspiration to thousands of people, and you have no right to call him a cheater when he has done nother wrong. Dont hate him just because he gets up eveyday and desides he is going to change the world, and you sit on your butt watch NCIS and eat cheedos on your bean bag chair.

okay sorry i did not mean that right at you, but you have to admit the majority of the people going after him right now people like paul kimmege who's cycling did not amount to crap, and are now doing what every thy can to bring down lance because he has thousands time the skill and drive thy had. It time for him to go away and get on his bean bag chair. This is about cancer first he need to learn that.

I love Cheetos! I actually don't think he's a doper. I think his body is just a freak of nature, and I think he works harder than anyone else. He's like the Tiger Woods of cycling.

If you want to talk about him being a bad guy, I'd say there are personal flaws that you could point out that have nothing to do with his cycling.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
