Tiger Woods holds a degree from Stanford and has excelled both as a professional golfer and as a businessman, so it’s safe to assume that he and math are well acquainted. Or maybe not. Tiger may have never mastered the elusive art of percentages because the New York Post is reporting what waiters in the Orlando area have known for years, Tiger doesn’t tip.

Don’t be too quick to judge poor Tiger. He may have millions of dollars, but he also clearly has a learning disability.

Just for clarity's sake, Tiger left Stanford early so he does not have a degree from there. I have read he is a bad tipper in the past. The excuse bandied about was that he never carries cash. Poor bastard.

If true, this does not surprise me. Over achievers expect a lot from other people and are rarely impressed by standard service. For a good tip, a waiter would have to perform in the top 1% of all waiters to get a good reward.

You dont need to be an overachiever to realize that quite a lot of offered service is nowhere near the tops of what can be done. Just having a bit of expierence in the service industry does help to understand this.

Does this mean, i dont tip - no. I only dont tip if the service really sucks, and then i simply wont go back there anymore or if the service staff has some kind of "demanding aura" that they are entiteld to 15% and less just gets you a strange look/snippy comment.

And not tipping cuz you dont carry cash - you can tip with your credit card too.

Uh guys, this is old news. Feinstein covered this as well as EVERY other golf journalist. Apparently, Mark O'Meara changed that habit of his - at least when it comes to tipping the attendants in the locker rooms at tournaments. Supposedly, he does tip now. Who knows maybe not. The rich tend to be frugal...

I'm sorry, but the way I grew up (and having busted my ass in a restaurant before at a young age) 15% is the standard tip if you go anywhere. Service is bad, decrease it by a few. Service is awesome, INCREASE it by a few.

If I go to any restaurant in town, regardless of the type of place, I usually plunk down a guaranteed 15% just because I know how it feels to try and work 6 tables at once and end up getting 3 dollars for for a 50 dollar tab.

I think they should add it to the check tbch.

i dont think tiger is eating out at red lobster very often... im thinking he goes to high end places to eat... im thinking the foo foo places he eats especially being a celeb tend to have upscale service...

back in high school i worked at a pretty pricey seafood restaurant that the occasional celeb/vip's would eat at... the staff would pretty much go out of the way to see that they were treated as a vip even if they had a history of poor tipping... ive seen some tip $100 bucks for a cocktail and others spend a few grand on a small party and tip $5... so tiger routinely tipping poorly or not at all must mean he enjoys bad service and frequents the same places all the time... or regardless of how well the service is... just isnt a tipper

I get tired of hearing wait staff or others that rely on tips complain about the customers only tipping 15% or not tipping. Tips are not required they are only provided by the generosity of the person (and too often the service is not very goo but the person still expects to be tipped). If you don't like it don't take the job. You have to know that tipping is optional and that some will tip well, some only average and some not at all or very little. If the employers cared they would pay a fair wage for the job performed and just include it in the price of the meal. But your employers don't care (and yet you don't complain about them but instead complain about the customers) or they would pay a better wage and not make you at the mercy of the generosity of others for your wages.

Restaurants and other business that have employees that rely on tips should change their business models. Why should an employer expect a customer to pay their bill to the company and then on top of that pay the businesses employees? Would you think of tipping your doctor or lawyer? How about their staffs? Should everyone receive a tip for doing their jobs? Most people look to their employer to pay them a fair wage for the job performed and they don't expect someone else to pay them on top of that.

I would prefer that restaurants pay their employees a fair wage and include it in the price of the food. I generally start at 15% and either deduct or add to it depending on the service. But why not just change the prices to reflect what the restaurants think their employees should be paid and not expect the customer to pay them separately?

imo... i think if a restaurant were to pay waitstaff enough so they didnt rely on tips... the service would go downhill... why give excellent service if you get paid the same amt as the person working half as hard and has a terrible attitude... tipping is sort of an incentive...

and i HATE going to a restaurant that includes the gratuity on the bill... if i get crappy service... i damn sure dont wanna tip... but being forced to tip regardless of service... that just isnt right

you dont even HAVE to tip the amount of the gratuity that is automatically added to the check. i have a freind who is a waiter at The Cheesecake Factory in Tampa and he recently told me about a table that complained about the tip that was automatically added to the check because there was more than 8 people at the table (policy), so the manager took it off....and they left him NOTHING....

That's pretty much spot on...HOWEVER - Restaurants expect you to tip so they can minimize overhead by paying the average waiter or waitress minimum wage or sometimes less. When I waited tables at age 16 at a nice italian joint, I made 4.15 an hour plus tips. Try living on 4.15 an hour when some total jerk comes in, has a 100 dollar meal with his wife and leaves 5 dollars on the tip.
