SAN DIEGO — On the day Tiger Woods usually hoists a trophy at Torrey Pines, the world’s No. 1 golfer was busy with the birth of his first son.

Woods confirmed Monday on his official Web site that wife Elin Woods gave birth for the second time. They had a daughter, Sam Alexis, in June 2007 on the day after the U.S. Open.

“Elin and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our son, Charlie Axel Woods, who was born on Sunday February 8, 2009,” Woods said in the announcement. “Both Charlie and Elin are doing great and we want to thank everyone for their sincere best wishes and kind thoughts. Sam is very excited to be a big sister and we feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful family. I also want to thank our doctors, nurses and the hospital staff for their personal and professional care. We look forward to introducing Charlie to you at the appropriate time, and again thanks from all of us for your kindness and support.”

The 33-year-old Woods is a six-time winner of the Buick Invitational, where he also won the U.S. Open last summer for his 14th career major. That was the last tournament he has played because of knee surgery a week later that ended his 2008 season. He is expected to return before the Masters, possibly as early as the Accenture Match Play Championship on Feb. 25.

He wrote in a newsletter last week that his return to golf depends largely on the birth of his baby, “which is due pretty soon.”

“That takes precedent over anything I do golf-wise,” Woods wrote. “Elin, Sam and I are very excited for the new baby to arrive, although that’s when the real lack of sleep begins.”

Woods was the only child born of his parents, Earl and Tida Woods. He had said after his marriage in 2004 that he looked forward to having more than one child.

Blessed yet again.

He seems to have a firm grasp on his priorties with family. I wish him the best.

I think back to when my wife and I wed. It was awesome, however not too much different from the time we dated. There was a deepened connection with both of our families. Our lives really changed when the baby came along....boy did it ever....all wonderful. I'm happy that Tiger is experiencing that as well....greatest blessing in life. I wonder how he deals with dirty diapers or if each baby had a "caddy" to take care of that. I don't miss that part of fatherhood!!!!

I am concerned that he's struggling to make ends meet during this tough economic period.....

Fine. But how does one get from Tiger ( a super high octane butt kicking macho name) to Charlie?

I would feel shortchanged. That kids name should be Zeus or something.

C'mon now, you do realize Tiger's real name is "Eldrick." Not exactly superhero-esque if you ask me...

Maybe Tiger is a Charlie Brown fan. At least he didn't name the kid 'Linus'.

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
