Tiger.....20 majors, 100 wins, nice round numbers....will he do it? And if he does, will anybody catch him in this lifetime? I was having this discuccion with some work buddies and it was actually a very amusing topic to discuss. Please share your comments and thoughts on this topic.

I think it's VERY doable. The only variable will be Tiger's continued penchant for excellence. He's got a family now, and regardless of what anyone might think, that will come into play sooner or later. While Tiger is inherently talented and athletic, his willingness to practice and excel will have to remain at the current level to achieve such a feat.

Will anyone else ever do it? Probably. We all thought that Mr. Nicklaus was the best ever and would not be beaten. The same with Mr. Hogan. Sooner or later, there will be another person willing to do what it takes.

All of that said.........UNLESS the USGA or Tour throttle back the balls and clubs. If that happens, all bets are off and the current and immediate stats will never be approached.

Depends on his physical condition, the luck of the bounces ("rub of the green" in golf terminology), the playing performances of opponents like Geoff Ogilvy, Anthony Kim, Adam Scott, and even old guys like Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry, Ernie Els, and of course, "The People's Champion" (as named by "Sports Illustrated")---Phil Mickelson.

Remember what Tiger said in an interview (I believe that it was on "60 Minutes")? He said that if he is ever in a condition where he cannot expect to win, he will walk away from the game. I take him at his word. Will her career continue for a long time? Possibly. Time will tell, as it always does.

Sometimes, we get lulled into complacency when a Superstar is in his or her prime. Then, we get shocked back into the reality that the game or sport existed before he or she came along, and will go on after their retirement or departure. At the beginning of 2008, who would have guessed that we would not see Annika on a regular basis again and she will never break Kathy Whitworth's record of 88 career victories? Who would have thought that after the US Open, we would not see Tiger for 8 months, and when he did come back, he would lose to Tim Clark? Life is fickle. If everything falls into place, then Tiger will achieve 20 Majors, but I have my doubts about 100 wins.

If he stays fit, I would say 20 majors comfortably.
And that record will last for all time.
Just say some young gun came out and won a major every year for the next 20 years, he would probably fall well short of where Tiger would be even if Tiger retired in 10 years.

It's all very well to say who would have thought anyone could beat Nicklaus' record (and it is yet to be done) but no-one is close to Tiger.
I would bet my life that if Tigers' record is eclipsed it won't happen in any of our lifetimes. With the talent that is out there, who is going to come out and win half the tournaments they enter?
Put another way, is there anyone who would be prepared to bet that Tiger WON'T get 20 majors?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

20 Majors Yes - IF he stays healthy. The amount of abuse his body takes (particularly his back and knees) will determine this.

I think if he comes back strong this year - winning or at least contending in the 4 majors he will get there. If he breaks down or is - for some reason - not the same Tiger it will be a wait and see.

At some point he will have reached his Zenith and then comes the inevitable fall from the top. I for one, hope we are still a few years away from that and that he will equal and even surpass his past greatness -but one never knows, do one?

Its not a matter of will he do it, its a matter of WHEN will he do it.

To me, barring any other/lingering injury issue, this is a no-brainer. Yes.

If Tiger stays healthy he will win 20 majors. As for 100 tour wins I am afraid he might walk away from the game after 20 majors.

I think he will do it for sure...we still haven't seen anyone that's even close to him yet. I can't wait to watch it happen.

he said in an interview a year or so ago that he would keep playing golf as long as he was able to be in contention. he said something along the lines of "once my best is not good enough to win anymore, i'll walk away from golf." so i think his physical condition will be what determines when he leaves the game, and not a certain set number where he says "okay, that's enough, i'm done here."

anyway, i don't keep up with wins/majors really, so forgive my ignorance here - what is tiger up to now? how far does he have to go to get the 20/100?

Its possible he will get 20 majors. But i think there is about a 10% chance he gets 100 wins. He puts just about all of his focus into the majors and WGC events.

I think it's too early to judge.
He's won his last 5 in exactly 3 years and we don't know yet if he can re-attain the heights he was at pre-operation. If he does, then he's scheduled to equal and surpass Nicklaus around summer 2011.

However, if this operation is so successful that he finds he can play better, then 20 Majors is attainable even sooner.

Personally, I'd like to see some guys put up more of a challenge and setup some kind of 'rivallry'...

    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
