As I've stated before, I've played "golf" since high school, but only got serious last fall. I've had a recent rash of rounds in the 80s, and feel like I'm still improving a lot -

except for the day when all of the sudden, I can't execute a golf swing to save my life - if I'm on the course that day I'm scrambling to stay in the low 100s, and if I'm on the range, I go thru 40 balls before hitting one I'm even remotely happy with -

A couple weeks ago, I realized that on those horrible days, I'm not making a shoulder turn, just lifting the club up with my arms. I was so happy to have figured it out!!! Unfortunately, just knowing what my problem was didn't seem to help the last time I was having issues. I would turn my shoulders, but it felt forced and everything was still very out of whack.

Today was another bad day on the range... but this time I thought of the way Hank would make Charles swing the club - lifting it straight up with his arms first, then making his turn into his back swing.

I took a few practice swings doing this motion, then another "regular swing"... and wow, it felt natural and smooth with a full shoulder turn. Then I stepped up to the ball, and hit a beautiful shot.

For the next 20 balls or so, I used that lift and turn swing for a practice swing, then hit the ball "normally" and 16 of the 20 were great, and the other 4 were serviceable.

The best part of this all, was that I never felt totally comfortable, and didn't have the feeling of being in the "zone" that is usually required for me to shoot the kind of round that I want to -

I'm hoping this "drill" can be my safety net for those really off days. It really helps groove the motion of a good turn even on bad days -

Has anyone found this "drill" this helpful? Does anyone use it as a crutch on bad days, or maybe just use it every time they take a practice swing?

I havn't really worked much on this drill, but my brother swears by it and he is has a 6 hcp. I seen Tiger on TV a few days ago and he was telling how Hank has him work on this drill or one almost the same. Tiger said he hates that drill but that it does work. I guess I'll have to give it a try.- Steve

I watched every episode of that show but cant think of the drill you're talking about, but I'm really interested. Is there a video on youtube or golfchannel.com on how to do it?

I've taught this to people before, including total beginners.

It's a great way to feel the wrist cock, shoulder turn and hip motion.

I'm more of a feel player and less mechanical in general so I don't generally use it (feels weird to me), but i know it can be awesome for many folks.

Sounds exactly like what happened to me a couple weeks ago. Couldn't hit the ball to save my life. Realized after a while I was all arms and not using my shoulders. Worked on it a little bit and now I'm hitting the ball better than ever.

no luck on finding a specific clip for you - but the show I think is still available on Golf Channel On Demand -

also, to help your memory, there were times in the show when Hank would actually use a long shaft to pick the club up for Charles some times - he would stand facing him, and use the shaft to kinda of hook the shaft of barkleys club, lift it up as he started to swing and say 'turn!' once he lifted it -

I know exactly what you are talking about. I had one of those days a week or two ago. PLayed twilight and the course was pretty well closed up. We had another 30 minutes of light left and my buddy and I hit the 165 yd par 3. I pulled out my 6 iron and practiced. We each hit 40 or so balls and I could not, for the life of me, hit one in the air and straight. I finally did the up, turn, hit method and was hitting balls about 50%. Hit probably 10 or 15 like that and then was able to hit straight again. I felt like I was taking the perfect backswing and had great wrist cock and the toe was up...but getting back to the ball was just not working. This helped.

Unfortunately, I can't hit 15 balls off a tee in the middle of a round if I've got the shanks/yips or whatever.

I appreciate you looking for me. I did some searching yesterday and couldnt find anything either.

I do remember Hank with the long shaft, picking the club up for Sir Charles, but I never quite got what was going on there, until now. So that was the same basic drill you were talking about, just with no one picking the club up for you?

    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
