I've been following the leaderboard today for the John Deere Classic. Michelle Wie is +4 right now after finishing her front nine.

It's nice to see Zach Johnson near the top of the leaderboard, as well as Ryan Moore and Chris DiMarco. Maybe DiMarco can snap out of the slump and get things going right in time to qualify for the Presidents Cup team. It has been a dreadful year for Mr. Claw.

Do you all think Michelle Wie will turn things around? She probably won't be making the cut unless she pulls out some great play on her back nine today.

Also, when will it be time for her to call it quits on the PGA Tour? If she fails to make the cut this week, she needs to stay away until she wins something else. Then again, I've been saying that for quite some time.

Edit: Right after I posted this, DiMarco carded a timely double bogey to drop back to -1 and five shots off the lead. Figures.

I hope she misses the cut by 40 shots...im sick of her getting into men's tournaments without proving herself in women's...at least win one on your own tour before you come over and try to compete...its a waste of a spot for someone who actually had a chance.

here we go again with that "waste of space" crap. Trust me neudi - if ANYBODY was worth the same (or more) amount of publicity - she'd be doing her homework back in Hawaii right now, because no sponsor in the world would invite her. It's a bogus argument and we went over it 1234532 times on this board - let it be, please (by the way - for the 10th time: SHE IS NOT A MEMBER OF LPGA AND CAN NOT PLAY MORE THAN 7 EVENTS THERE !!!! )

The XM PGA Radio guys had interesting concept of Michelle. One of the analysts said, that her (current) game skill doesn't fit setup of LPGA events, but it's perfect for a PGA like-setup. This is a reason why she plays well in LPGA majors and actually plays well in the PGA events... but not comparing to the field - the guys are just that much better. She has to learn to play the "ladies" game to win anything against woman in a "regular" LPGA event... oh yeah - and once these morons on top of LPGA will actually allow her to play more than 7 events there.

Most exemptions are given to people who don't really have a chance, and again, it makes sense for a tournament like the John Deere to boost the gate sales and media receipts.

Plus I read somewhere that Michelle Wie's record against women in the past year is something like 290-13-7 or something like that. She's beaten 290 women, lost 13 times, and tied 7 others. Even Annika didn't have a record that good. Wie still has a big fat "zero" in the wins column, but against her "peers," she's pretty dominant if you look at it that way. She had a bad day today. I wonder if she's fatigued.

I'm sure she is completely fatigued after her last month of going and going and going.

I just think she needs to win something else before playing anymore PGA Tour events. I could care less if it's an LPGA event or an ABCD event. She isn't donig herself any justice by missing cuts on the PGA Tour. She is actually getting farther and farther away from making the cut. That monkey on her back is turning into a gorilla.

It's smart of the John Deere Classic officials to give her an exemption, but before long, fans won't give a damn if she is in the field or not. Maybe she will make a cut then.

The contrary point of view is that,

since she's not allowed to play more LPGA events than she is playing , she may as well fill her summer playing tough golf. There's no doubt in my mind that playing PGA Tour events helps her play and do well in LPGA events. She's said it herself, as have others like John Daly and others - playing the longer, tougher PGA Tour courses makes the LPGA courses seem "easier" and thus she is prepared for them in a way no other woman can really claim. And nobody has placed as high as she has in the past four LPGA majors (combined). So I give her credit for that. And finally, I'll say this again: It's very likely none of these issues would even be points of discussion if Bivens had removed her head from her generous ass and granted Wie membership to the LPGA Tour.

I don't think consistently failing to make the cut will help her on the LPGA Tour in any way possible. She is as talented as any other female golfer in the world, and that's the reason she does so well in LPGA events. Her playing in PGA Tour events and missing the cut isn't helping one bit. I don't care what she says. According to her, she did play solid golf today, with the exception of getting four penalty strokes.

Duh! I play pretty well every time too, except for the 10 mishits and three three-putts. I never agreed with her playing PGA Tour events, so there is no reason for me to start backing the decision now.

However, the more I see her, the more she makes me want to vomit. I get sick of her "B-Game" and "solid golf" talk. She didn't play solid enough obviously.

Even if Bivens let Michelle Wie play every event on the LPGA Tour, she would still try to play in men's events when given exemptions. She wants to play with the big boys for some reason.

I don't like it, and I don't have to like it.

I stand behind my comment...she has not done anything to prove to me that she should be allowed to play on the men's tour...only reason she is playing is b/c her sponsors are the hosts of the tournaments...i honestly don't care how many LPGA tournaments she is allowed to play in either...if she plays in 7 or 40...she hasn't won one and hasn't lived up to all the "hype" taht everyone is giving her...she should have learned from annika and quit playing mens tournaments after her first one...

That's because you're missing the point. It's not "missing the cut" that helps her. It's playing a PGA Tour course under competitive situations that helps her.

Athletes in other sports train harder than their actual events, like a 100-meter-dash sprinter putting weights on his ankles in training. When he gets to the "regular" event, it's "easier" because his training was hard. She's playing "tougher" courses under competitive strain. When Bivens finally lets her play more than the 7 events she is allowed to play now, that will be to her benefit. Again, she's something like 290-13-7 or something against other women in the past year.

She says it does. Who are you to say otherwise?

I don't care what she says.

Oh, I see. You know more than she does? C'mon Cody, you know you don't, and I know you know you don't.

However, the more I see her, the more she makes me want to vomit. I get sick of her "B-Game" and "solid golf" talk. She didn't play solid enough obviously.

How good were you at handling the press when you were 16? Her comments are dumb - and we roasted her on the podcast for 'em, too - but you have to be able to separate these things a little more.

You don't know that. I think she might play the Sony Open, but that has more to do with the number "10,000,000" and an island named "Hawaii" more than anything else.

Annika is allowed to play more than 7 events on the LPGA Tour. Annika's reasons for playing against the men were

totally different than Michelle Wie's are.

I have just as much right to bash her for the comments as you guys have on the podcast.

I'll just leave this topic alone from now on because everyone knows what I think. And if anyone dislikes or disagrees with my opinions, deal with it. I'll just be sure to let out a big smile every time Michelle Wie struggles on the PGA Tour.

No, not really. It's not the same thing. You're guessing at her motives or what she gets out of something. We "bashed" what she said. We didn't have to guess at what she said - it was right there in quotation marks, transcripts, etc.

You seem to have an irrational dislike of Michelle Wie. I think there are support groups for that... I'm willing to let this one die too, but c'mon, speculating on what she gets out of doing what she does versus commenting on some dumb comments she's made are very different things.

Yeah, that's the part I was talking about in my last post. It was wrong for me to guess at her motives because I really don't know them. I was just talking about the comments she makes after her rounds.

I don't dislike her at all when she plays where she is supposed to. There is a reason there is a PGA Tour and LPGA Tour. I just don't like her when she plays with the guys. I felt the same way when Annika did it a few years back.

I said I was done earlier, yet I replied again. Blah...

Fair enough. Her comments are consistently dumb, yeah. She talked about "bad breaks" but she seemed to create them all. No bad bounces, just bad shots.

I don't dislike her at all when she plays where she is supposed to. There is a reason there is a PGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

Just as there is a reason why "PGA" isn't "MPGA," right???

I just don't like her when she plays with the guys.

If you were her, what would you do? She's playing against women as much as she can. She's a professional golfer. What would you do if you were her?

Go to the mall, swimming pool, movies, etc. I'd probably do the stuff most 16-year olds do in the summer months.

And besides, there has to be other teenage girls playing golf somewhere in the world. Why can't she play with them? She might dominate them, but hey, a win is a win. She obviously isn't making any money playing the John Deere Classic (minus all the endorsement crap as usual).

Professionally? No...

She's gaining experience. And getting publicity, which Sony/Nike like.

    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
