I made 2 severe mistakes

1. not coming to this forum before i purchased my clubs.

2. Buying a new set of irons and drivers without getting fitted.

I was told after my fitting that i would need irons +1 to 1.5 inches longer, and that the lie would need adjusting too.

I bought Nike sumo irons steel stiff +1/2 inch.

Should i pay to have them lengthened? Or should I just get a new set that was built for me?

thanks for the advice

If you had a static fitting and they said to adjust your irons +1-+1.5 inches, then you should definitely do it. I've never had it done, but I saw on another thread that someone had 8 clubs lengthened an inch for $5 a piece, and he was really satisfied. So it doesn't seem to be too expensive.

true. i see lots of new sets in a local golf shop that are sold as 1/2" to 1.5" lengthened. it definitely is cheaper than buying a completely custom set.

thanks for the reply, they want $10 a club, or it was $30 club for a brand new shaft....do you think my hybrids need to be lengthened too?

I have a 21 hybrid and a 27

How do the clubs play? Were your previous clubs +1 or 1 1/2? I would not go for new clubs unless you are certain that it is needed.

how tall are you? 1.5" is alot of extra length on a golf club. You might find out after having them lengthened you need to have the lie adjusted, so add another few dollars for that as well. Does the $10 include a new grip? If it does, that isn't a bad deal, considering you get new grips out of it as well. even if it doesn't it still isn't a terrible deal.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

whoever told you that you need a new shaft to lenghthen the club is lying to you to get more money. i would be wary of wherever you are currently thinking about getting the clubs longer...

How do shafts get lengthened? Is there more than enough shaft that can be pulled out or something?

Adding that much length is going to make the swing wieght really different. I would be concerned about that.

No, shafts are not telescoping.

They may cut a piece of another shaft, epoxy it to the grip end and cut it to length. Most will tell you they have had good experiences with shaft lengthening. I just paid to have my daughter's lengthened by Ping, and I'm sure they did it right, BUT the irons have come back with a strange sound at impact related to the insert. Come October they will be going back for reshafting. I would also have caution about an inch or more, but that's just me.

Have you hit your irons yet? Do you feel that they are too short (do you feel that you are too slumped/cramped in your stance or have to stand too close to the ball)? If they are already .5" longer than standard I'd assume that would be enough unless you're around 6'3" tall or over.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
