I'm playing Cog Hill #4 (Dubsdread) in 3 weeks. I played #2 (Ravines) yesterday and they're already putting up the stands and tents around the course. So when we play it in a couple of weeks it should be pretty cool. Yesterday, for those of you who have ever played #2, they have a 19th hole (par 3) that runs along #18 on Dubs. They had the pin in the front with water on the left and sand and a landing area so small it was incredible. Can't wait to get out there!

Yes, twice. Once the week before the old International tournament at Kapula Plantation in Maui, HI and last year, a week or so before the Barclays at Ridgewood CC in NJ. I shot 85 at RCC because I had to basically wedge out anytime I missed the fairway. The fairways were very narrow; I am a very straight driver, but sometimes if you just missed slightly you would get into trouble. The greens were very very fast, but so true that putting was not a problem either.

I've played right after a tour event (Spyglass and Poppy Hills) but never before. What surprised me most was how hard and fast everything was. Easily an extra 20 yards off the tee with the dried out landing areas and the greens were brutal. Even after a good soaking.

But I've played La Purisma in Lompoc and Fort Ord in Monterey right before Q school sectionals. All tough tracks but they didn't have them tricked up at all.

Played Valhalla right after the Ryder Cup. The course wasn't really setup that difficult, but the greens were VERY fast but receptive. I shot 82, from the tees in front of the tips, still like 6900+ yards! There were a couple of par 4's I had to hit fairway woods into and I am not a very short hitter.

Pro' s definitely play a different game than weekend or even avid golfers on PGA courses. If your average single digit handicap played on a PGA style setup weekly, he/she would quickly gain 10-12 strokes.

It always amuses me to hear someone say that could shoot even or under par during a 4 round tourney on the Tour just because they consistently shoot a couple under on their home course.

played TPC Deere Run a few days after the tournament last year and shot 74 from the TPC tees. played Whistling Straits after the Sr. US Open and shot 78. its amazing the set-ups these players shoot the low scores on. putting isn't too bad once you get the speed down because the greens putt so true and are in such good condition. the rough is usually where they seperate the men from the boys, miss a fairway by more then 2 or 3 yds. and you might as well forget about hitting anything more than a 8i.

I played Prairie Dunes right AFTER the 2006 Senior US Open. It was as hard as it's ever been. I shot 85. I was an 8 HC then, and I was elated at the 85.

I played Alvamar right after a Kansas University tournament a week and a half ago - the greens were shaved razor close - FAST.

I played Carnoustie a few weeks ago, shot +1, 73, the 17th and 18th were both cut short tho, only playing about 300 so that made it a bit easier!
The greens were incredible you can see why the top guys make the putting look so easy.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
