Watching him today, it seems like he chokes up on every shot except off the tee. I think that he does it with some regularity, but it seems like it is every shot. Am I just imagining things?

You may be imagining things, but not on Furyk's shots, no. He stands so close to the ball perhaps it's tough to get shafts 2" shorter than standard, so he just gets them 1" shorter and grips down.

That's all speculation, but you're not imagining that he grips down quite frequently, no.

I have a problem sometimes with getting too close to the ball, which sometimes leads to me not being able to get out of my own way, and I can either block it way right, or just yank it so hard left it's ridiculous.

Furyk stands so close to the ball, his hands are almost between his thighs at address. It's crazy that he ends up on plane from there.
