Out of

1) Ping Rapture V2 irons (steel)

2) Taylormade R7 CGB MAX irons (steel)

Money not an issue, which set do you think is the better "SUPER" game improvement Irons?

Haven't tried either of those two...I tried the Ping G10s & TaylorMade Burner irons though...I recommend trying the Nike Sumo irons for Super Game Improvement - these are really understated clubs which I think came out trumps over the more established irons such as the Callaway Big Berthas etc...

I may be joining a mate at my local pro shop to help him pick a set of SGI irons soon...so I will add those to the list and give you my opinion if you like.

my dad use to have the CGB max clubs, then traded for burner iron set. CGB is an awesome club, and gets more distance then normal clubs. The only problem with the club i had is lower ball trajectory. Overall i liked the feel of the club and the finish of it.

As for the rapture, i havent really hit it on the range or on the field but from my local golf shop, i got to demo it out on the simulator. the finish on it is nice, and the feel is okay. i cant say much without hitting in the range.

Its all you, try it out and see which one feels better.

Balto,

If you are using the Maltby Playability Factor to classify clubs, then TM's R7 GCB Max is not a Super Game Improvement club. This club model carries an MPF = 479, putting it in the Conventional category. Maltby rates conventional as best for players with 14 handicap and below who like muscle-backed clubs. Comments by [B ] is2linda support this:

Some players like conventionals if they have trouble keeping ball down, or they may like the feel better.

If you're not into muscle-back, you can move up to Game Improvement irons or above and still work the ball with gusto - providing you know how a golf swing works. The Ping Rapture V2 , however, falls into the Ultra Game Improvement category with MPF = 899. It gives lots of help on mishits, and getting the ball up. ------------------------------------- Note: The MPF equation, in general terms, ranks clubhead design on forgiveness on mishits, and to what degree it helps get shots airborne. It does not , however, include player strength or shaft factors.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Weird cause TM have there R7 CBG MAX rated as there Maximum Forgiveness clubs. Thanks for the website.

Also, does it pretty much mean the higher the number the more Forgiveness it will have? The Callaways seems to be pretty solid

None of the above. IMO, Mizuno MX-100s, MX-950s, MX-200s or Callway Big Berthas would be better choices.

Hmm just read a bunch of threads about how MPF rankings are really not spot on to say the least hehe, but fun to look at none the less.

Balto,

You might go onto Ralph Maltby's blog and e-mail him a question on TM irons. I'm pretty well versed on Callaway, Titleist, and Ping, but am not that familiar (hands on) with other iron makers.

If you go to Ralph's online site, you can also find the MPF update reports for 2007, 2008 and 2009. It's surprising which clubs only hit Game Improvement, and which - such as Ping's S57 blades, hit Super Game Improvement.

For Callaway, Big Bertha irons reach the top end of the Ultra Game I, while X20 and X22 barely reach into UGI. X22, however, can be fitted with midkick shafts if you're worried about popping the ball up too much.

And as I warned in a previous item, MPF does not take into account player strength, or type of shaft in the club.

I am a 12 handicap and have been using a set of Ping i10's. Someone at the club house had a slightly used set of Raptures at the course this weekend for sale. I decided to take them to the range and see the difference. WOW. I never hit a ball that straight in my life. Dont think you will be able to work it, but the ball went higher, longer and straighter then I hit with my Ping i10's. Needless to say, the Raptures came home with me.

I've hit the Mizuno MX100, easy to hit and very gorgeous.

I recently demo'ed those in picking some new irons, and they were the runner up to the x-20's I decided to go with. MX100 are really great looking and perform well, I just slightly preferred the x-20's feel and performance.

Not one of your choices, but I have had great successs with the 2008 Big Bertha irons. The I-brid long irons work well on par 3's. With work and family I don't have alot of time to play and no time to practice and these fit the bill for me perfectly.
