Its times like these, I realize I'm not as young as I used to be (age 28 now). I walked 18 early this AM (trying to get my excercise in), and although I pushed what feels like 75% of my drives into the woods or rough, I managed to save lots of pars, have a smile on my face after a few hard fought bogeys, and even sunk a bird on a long par 3. I ate my hot dog and had my 2 bud lights afterwards and said, 'heck if I just could pure some drives and not have to punch out so much, I bet I'll shoot the best round of my life!'

Well silly me, I decided to walk again since I wanted more excercise (need to get air outta the spare tire). Next thing I know my left toe is developing a blister, my knees are sore, and every club in my bag feels like it weighs forty pounds. The temp also went up a good 10-15 degrees and cloud cover vanished. I sprayed the ball all over the place, topped some balls too...no power either, as it was hard to keep my legs quite with all the pain I felt. Terrible round.

Oh well, lesson learned, my bad. I am not as sturdy as I used to be...I hurt my game more than I helped it. The bright point of it all though re: first 18...I think those shots I was forced to run along the ground and below trees (adversity in general I guess) brought out the best in me and forced me to focus on good wedge play. I'll take that. Too bad the 2nd 18 was an excercise in spraying the ball far deeper into the woods so that rescue shots were not to be had so easily.

Anyways, just wanted to share with ya'll, since you guys feel like my collective playing buddies in some sense. Now...where is a bucket of ice for me to soak my feet?

I walked 54 once. Bad idea. 36 doesn't bother me took much until the last 5 holes usually. My legs start getting tired. Next time I go 36, I'll take a cart (as I'm sure you will too).

I took my wife to jury duty, dropped her off, then walked 18. She called around the 17th and said she'd be stuck a few more hours. I walked around again. First I stopped in the pro shop and said I wanted to go around around and how much? The guy shook his head and said "just go." Hah! I started breaking down around the 4th tee, but the endorphins kicked in. I shaved 10 shots off my first round. I was really beat up, though, and it took me a few days to recover. I think I would have been OK with a pushcart. At 47, though, I think I'll skip the 36 hole walk from now on...

What were you thinking? That there's nothing better to beat oneself up with (over?) than golf. I'm with you on that one. Sometimes I don't know when to say when.

I'm 28 also, and though older players will certainly say that's still young, it's nothing like being 22.

Kudos to you! I'm 49 and my peers think I'm nuts when I tell them I walked 18. But these guys in their 20s complaining, man, that ain't right lol. Try water skiing all day when you're 40! Talk about beat up, lol, you're insides feel like they're going to fall out.

I never realized how heavy my bag was until I walked 9.....yeah seriously. Im 21 and had never walked a course. Unfortunately as Im walking off the 2nd green on a very wet and soggy course, which made it harder to walk, the sun comes out and its 94 degrees and humid. Lets say I paid the $4 for a cart on the back 9 lol

yeah... that's me, hockey and golf. I actually try to skate all year now, because when I take a few months off I'm sore as hell from using my muscles in a different way.

to the OP... I'm 29 (30 in Nov.) and I know exactly what you mean... at 21 I could play any sport all hours of the day and be fine. At 25 I started getting sore longer periods... and now, well now I can feel a good skate for a couple days at times and injuries take twice as long to heal. I have walked 36 a few times last year... and yes, it did kick my ass a bit... 27 is actually perfect. If I'm doing 36 now I like to have a cart.

Wow you guys are weak! I almost always carry unless I at a course where you are required to ride. I play 36 in day walking a few times per year, and on a golf weekend we play 5 rounds in 3 days and I walk and carry for all them.

I am 35 now so not all that old, but at 28 walking 36 should be no problem

It really depends on the course... in Toledo, OH there were courses so flat I could walk all day and never even get tired... but some of the hilly courses we have in Charlotte + some 95 degree heat, and I'm ready to be done after 27. I'm a big dude so that adds some stress, but I can still play a mean game of racquetball and skate pretty good... so I'm not out of shape by any means. 36 holes can be a LOT on some courses, while 36 on others is like 18 on some I play in this area...

-just my 2 cents PS... 35 is pretty old

You have to get used to it slowly and increase the distance you walk - then its a piece of cake to walk >18.

So do it again a couple days from now, and again and again, and it will feel a lot easier.

lol im 27, I'm in good shape. If I walk 18 holes I'm damn near dead at 18th tee. Mostly because the courses I play are extremely hilly, and I refuse to take a cart.

I used to walk 36 many many days. I was about 24 or so. I was in good shape and the heat here is nothing like it is there. But it was really hilly. I liked it and I definetly got a good work out.

I wish I was finishing up my first 18 right now...

I would do it now if I didn't have a job, family, and other things I have to do.
