I apologise for the vague nature of all of my posts, but hey. I'm not well versed in anything (yet?) so I need all the help I can get.

I recently bought a set of WS Di-7's, 4-SW, and immediately had an argument with my 4 iron. Everything that could have gone wrong, did. So, I decided it was time to move on, and hop on the hybrid train.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about hybrids. When I played golf as a kid, they were but a twinkle in someone's eye. This is where you guys come in! I'm looking for something to make me doe-eyed with infatuation. When I bought the Di-7's, the sales-guy immediately tried to push a FYbrid onto me, but I told him I'd like to try to come to terms with one thing at a time.

So, seeing as the nearest golf shop is a fair trek away, is there anything I should put on the 'to try' list that you guys could recommend?

Again, sorry for the vague nature of the post, but I really have not even a slither of a clue about hybrids so would appreciate all the (hopefully impartial) help I can get.

Thanks in advance!

I like my 08 TM burner rescue club, 19 deg. I am having a few issues with topping it, but that's my fault with a new club. When hit solid it gets up quick, straight and lands soft on the green. I can't hit a 3 iron consistent enough to keep one in my bag, so I use the hybrid instead. I may get a 4 hybrid at one point to make my 4 iron a thing of the past.

You'll find RAM hard to beat at the price if you just want something to learn with. Borrow my brother's recently and he never got it back.

Where abouts in England do you play?

I have two Adams a7 hybrids. (3 and 4irons) I can't speak highly enough of them. Not just the Adams hybrids, but I have hit many different clubs similar such as the TM rescues, Callaways, Titleist... all felt really good and produced good results.

My old cheap sports direct set had a 3 and 4 iron which I really liked. My new Wilson X-31's start at a 5 iron and have a 3 and 4 hybrid.

At the moment I'm struggling to get to grips with the hybrids. I don't want to go back to my old 3 and 4 iron as my new set are much much better. I think my problem is in my head, and I'm having trouble treating the hybrids as irons.

I know people say they're supposed to be much easier to hit, but not for me!

Any tips would be appreciated :D

+1 on the Cobra Bafflers. Also the Tour Edge Geomax hybrids are nice. If your on a budget Rockbottomgolf has them for $29 each. You can get the 08 DWS bafflers for around $90 to $100 each new. Wilson Fybrid's should be good also.

Thanks for the replies guys, much obliged!

I've got a shortlist of recommendations crossed with what was in stock that they've held for me to try out, which consists of the TM Burner rescue, a Cobra Baffler, and the Wilson FYbrid he tried to offer me when I was there before.

Unfortunately, there's none of the other recommendations available (no Adams at all, no RAM hybrids) so that'll have to make do for now at least. I'll get to the shop and try those out and let you know what happens =)

Kellfire, I live in Ripon, North Yorkshire and play around that area. For now, as I get back into the game, I'm sticking to a local muni at Spofforth, near Harrogate, but I've been around the area when I was younger. Playing at Romanby near Northallerton next Saturday, they've got some twilight deals going that I couldn't pass up =) How about yourself? I assume when you say 'north-east', you're located on or around the Newcastle area and I'm technically a Southerner to you

Updates.

I went back to the driving range (just got back) and hit ~80 balls with my 4 iron. I was getting about 2/3 of them in a straight line, which actually surprised me for the good, but I was only getting them between 160-175 yards. I was warming up with my 7 iron, which was dropping just short of the 175 sign and rolling. So uh, what?

I'm still massively dissatisfied with my 4 iron, and I'll still be shopping for a hybrid/rescue, but yeah, what's up with this?

I was playing a RAM hybrid this morning, a 21*, and it was much better than my 3i. It's so much easier to get into the air but the particular model I have is from their Wizard iron set aimed at uber beginners and it balloons up too much for my liking. I may ask Santa for a more penetrating pair of hybrids. This month's Today's Golfer has an extensive review on them, I can't recommend the edition highly enough. Get down the shop and pick it up.

I'm actually just up the road from Northallerton in Middlesbrough (from Northern Ireland originally) so let me know how that course works out, I may go down and play it some time.

you might want a 3 and 4 hybrid, i even have a 5 hybrid as well. I bought this set of hybrids I got from optingolfer.com, they're warrior golf hybrid set, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for $70 including shipping and I love them, except for the 2, just never did hit it well so I sold it. But i use the other 3 a lot, they're demo clubs, which means yes they are used but they looked basically new. I think the flatter more low profile hybrids, as these are are easier to hit, not as likely to chunk them and hit them fat like the more boxy hybrids but thats just my opinion. You dont need to spend a lot of money to find something you can hit. Rockbottomgolf.com has a lot of good deals, Ive bought a couple of clubs from them, my driver and 3 wood and they ship quickly and are good to deal with, have about the best prices ive seen anywhere and good customer service.

Even though we may have suggested to you only a few hybrids, you should still go out and try as many as you can in your price range

Myeah, the limiting factor is that the only golf retailer in any form of vicinity (we're talking 45 minute drives here) only has a bay, which means I can't see a proper shot, only my ball hitting a net and a general feel of the club. I'm pretty uncomfortable with this, especially as a high handicapper as I can't really mind-link with the feeling of connection and determine what's going to be a super awesome good shot or what's going to end up curling off to the right/left, there's only so much I can gather from a bay testing.

I'm going on monday, so I'll tell you guys what happened. Meanwhile, I'll curse my 4 iron in my sleep. Thanks for the replies again, it's much obliged.

I'm all for hybrids-I usually carry one or two in my bag, but don't abandon the 4-iron completely, I think the ability to hit an iron of average 4-iron loft is going to be a very useful skill as you improve. I think a 21*, 22*, or 23* lofted hybrid will take the place of both your 3 and 4-irons for a while, but also allow you to leave the 4-iron in your bag for punch shots and for practice on the range.

Yeah, I was thinking of going for one of a loft between or around the 3i-4i range, and possibly one of a lower loft as well, to kinda bridge the gap, so to speak.

Kellfire, just out of curiosity, are there any big golf stores up in or around Middlesbrough? I'm currently having to drive to York, so it'd be pretty much six and two threes to drive there instead and if I have a chance at a better selection of clubs to try it'd definately be worth it~
