Just wondering if with enough practice any golfer could become a pro.
Or does that person have to have a underlying "talent" at golf?

First off if your talking PGA Tour no anybody can't do it. If you mean PGA of America Pro then yea I'd say many more people could get their PGA of America card if they dedicated themselves to the game. You still need to have some natural ability though. Some people seem to be destined to be 18's their whole life. If a player has played golf for 5 yrs. and still hasn't figured out how to play the game, not hit balls, but play the game then no they probably aren't going to be able to be a pro. So in not so many words no not everyone can be a Pro.

First off let me say this...just practicing wouldn't be the right way to do it, you would want to make sure you are practicing the right way. I mean I can go out there and pound balls for the next 10 years, but if I am not doing it right then I am probably not going to be able to get much better.

I wouldn't say anybody could do it; but I mean the old saying goes that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Are they going to be successful, not necessarily but they might qualify for a couple of middle ground tournaments. There are many different tours between a PGA of America and a PGA Tour pro. I think it's probable that if someone could dedicate enough time to practicing the right things that they could make it on one of the bigger tours. It would definitely take a lot of time and money.

I think with enough proper practice and instruction just about anyone can hit a golf ball as well as a touring pro, but being good enough at the game to be a touring pro is a completley different animal. There are probably 50 guys out there that hit a golf ball just as well or better than Tiger Woods, but none of them have his resume. There comes a point where the game is more mental than mechanical..

To make it on tour its going to take a certain amount of natural talent. It will take a ton of practice too, but you will need lessons so that you are practicing in the right way.
Practicing and ingraining the same old swing flaws isnt going to do you any good.

Tour Pro?

Next week, Q-school will be on Golf Channel. Watch it if you can.
Most talented golfer I know had been in Q-school for six or more times but didn't make it yet. I don't think his practice wasn't enough though.

I'm sure one could, if given enough time, and was already fairly athletic from doing other sports while growing up. And then there's the mental game, which is hard to attain. Most of that is born with you I think.

Well I managed to get down to +2 by myself. I've now turned pro got a coach and in the space of a few months what a difference it has made to my ball striking and chipping. I'm gonna give it a shot this year see how I get on. Not everyone is going to be like McIlroy and have all the talent in the world and be able to step up in the space of a few months but ill work at it and if it all goes tits up at least I can say I gave it a shot.

I still like to think that anybody could become a golf pro but not everyone can...

Ultimately talent, practice, opportunity and luck means not everyone will get there.....

I have also read to be world class at anything you need to practice 10000 hours... That is the time it takes to be that good at something. Be it golf or anything else

One of the best golf books I've read is "Paper Tiger" by Tom Coyne. The premise was exactly the question posed in this thread. He was a low single digit golfer, had played competitively when he was younger, and at 30 he decided to devote a year to practicing full time. He moved to Florida to play year-round, got constant coaching, physical conditioning and training, mental game help. It was a fascinating read and I won't spoil it here. But right off the bat you realize there's a huge gap between a scratch golfer and having the ability to get through Q school, regardless of the level of tour.

NOOOOOOO! How many golfers have you seen who play and practice all the time and can't even shoot in the 70's. I've played with guys who have been coached by some of the best since childhood and really wanted to play competitive golf and never shot in the 60's. On the other hand one of my friends picked up a club for the first time as a freshman in high school and shot 68 at state his senior year. He is the type who could have made it! All others need to stick to recreational golf.

So your saying that no matter how good you practice and no matter how perfect your swing gets you can't turn pro?

You sure?

How many tour spots are their? 175 or so? So you need to be in the top 175 in the world for the most part.

Talent has a ton to do with it, not so much with a perfect swing but rather touch and feel.

All the 100 meter practicing you can do will not have you running stride for stride with Ussain Bolt (sp?).

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
