Irons: 4-SW?

going to buy some new irons this weeks (Pings) but wasn't sure about how many sticks i should buy. i use a hybrid instead of a 3 (also adds some versatility) so it will be 4 through... that's the question. obviously it will be down to at least the pitching wedge down to the sand wedge at all? thoughts? right now most of my short game (flops, sands, chipping) is down with my 56 wedge. i cover the distance from pitching to sand by 3/4 and 1/2 swings and i find this works fine for me now. thoughts?

A club company rep at a demo day had some comments about stock wedges which are designed for particular iron sets. Above PW, he said, the stock wedges aren't all that great. But, "great" depends on what you want out of the wedges. Find what works.

For your new irons, you might go with 4-PW, and non-stock wedges for the remainder.
I just ditched a stock X20 AW in favor of the CG14 in my sig line. Just couldn't get any real feel or consistent distance out of the X20 AW.

Can any Ping players help us on whether you use stock I- or G-family wedges?

I recently put a 3 and 4 hybrid in the bag in place of the 3 and 4 iron. Loving this so far. I would consider 4 (or 5)-PW and look at some Cleveland, Vokey, etc.. wedges in G-S-L. I love these scoring clubs myself. Lob is about 65-70, sand is about 85-90, and gap is about 100-105. Having these three wedges gives me lots of confidence when I get to 100 yards and in. I always prefer aftermarket wedges to the sand wedge in a set. Much better in my experiences. Lots to choose from, but Cleveland and Titliest Vokey seem to be the top two for most folks. In either case, I would consider getting a set in 4-PW and getting seperate wedges. Be picky about the bounce as well. The way you play, the type of courses, etc.. will influence what amount of bounce you will benefit from most. Worth reading up on before buying wedges.


I just checked out Ebay. I got my wedge set there in the spring, Cleveland DSG Gunmetal 588's. Bought from Mapleleafgolfco and they are great. Got the three wedges for $200 and received them just days later. I see they have a listing for the sand and gap in the same clubs for about $150. Perhaps they have the lob as well. Just thought I would mention this. These are the best wedges I have hit. Very easy to hit and accurate.

I have the G10 SW, but it just sits in my closet.......

I use the Hippo 56 and 60 wedges, they are forged musclebacks. Tons of feel, which is what you want around the greens.

I'll take out the SW today from Ping and report back after the round. Ive always been interested in how this club performs

I would get the 4-PW set and then get your SW-LW seperate.

I have up to PW. I use Ping tour wedges after that. You can get a better loft set up by getting your wedges separate.

I agree with most others... 4-PW then just find some wedges you like. Only oher option I would consider is 4-GW or AW... NOT 4-SW... a GW/AW will have a loft around 50-52, while a SW will likely be 56... meaning your set will likely be 9i (42*) PW(46*) then either a proper 3-5* gap or a huge one if you go with SW. Don't get me wrong, you could still fill that gap with another wedge, but then you will likely have a non set matching wedge in a gap between two wedges that go with the set... it just wouldn't make sense.

when i had my hogans i carried a 52,56, and 60* vokey set...

but since ive gotten my g5's, ive pulled the 56* vokey and kept the 54* ping sw and bent the vokey 52 to 50*.

i like the extra bounce of the ping sw for shots out of the rough and i'm more comfortable with it for full shots.. my g5 set came with a 58* LW but that quickly got thrown in the garage, i like to be able to lay the face open on my 60* when i need to...

the g5 wedges spin quite a bit for being stock cavity back super clunkers... alot more than i expected them to....

One thing to look out for is the lofts of the wedges in your set...

I've got Wilsons and even with a GW I've got a 7 degree gap in my bag.... (49 to 56 and yes pun intended )

My yardages seem ok but....
