Help!! GPS Question

Hey guys!

Tried searching for this and couldn't find anything. I am looking into buying a GPS unit and my main concern for going with a GPS rather than a laser device is that it does not give me yardages on the range. Then just the other day, a buddy of mine told me that his SkyCaddie had all the range info on each of the courses. I am looking into the SkyCaddie SGX when it comes out and it will be a deal breaker if it does not have driving range distances. Do they? Do they account for the different hitting areas when others are growing the grass back? Anyone know? Thanks!!

I think it depends on whether the driving range flags or poles were located when the GPS company surveyed the course. I have a Skycaddy; originally my home did not have the range included. I downloaded it again in January, and the range was in there.

Didn't matter to me, as I had walked the range one evening and custom-plotted the distances into the Skycaddy.

Might be worth an email to Skycaddy to see whether the driving ranges have been plotted for the courses you are interested in.

Does anybody know if you can "map your own course" on the range and it could give you distances to the markers on the range. I try to find places where I can hit off of grass, they tend to move the tees a lot, for obvious reasons... if i can map my own course I think i can make it so that it'll measure to the markers. I have a sky caddie as well, but don't know how to do it... anybody know the answer to that?

You can map your range and set them as courses. I have maped my two local ranges on my sky caddie including targets other than the flags knolls, trees, etc.... To give me more yardages. I then built a two sided laminate of the waypoints.
I now use a laser as well and mostly just use that at the range. I use the GPS to mark yardages on the course though.

Actually it's just one of many. None is the best, they only offer different features for different prices. It depends on what you think you need. Some do not require the annual fee that SkyCaddie does, so many players would consider that to be a huge bonus. Since you only borrow your dad's, you don't have to absorb that cost. I bought one that doesn't do any extraneous stuff, it just tells me the distances I need to know. No fooling around changing screens, pressing buttons. Just start it up, scroll to the first hole, and forget about it for the round.

The Callaway uPro is awesome. It has real images of the course and like many other untis, it detects your position and you can move a cursor to where you believe the pin to be. This way you don't have to rely on just the distance to the front,back and middle calculations.

Yes you can. The instructions tell you how to input a "course". I just made each driving range pole a "hole". Then I play the range "course" and go to whatever hole I want to hit to. Easy.
