Just looking for some reviews of courses in/around Vancouver. Looks like we'll be taking the annual man trip up there this year. The other guys aren't big golfers so I'm looking to stay less than $100/round.

From just looking at websites there are some great courses to be played and the cost seems really low.

Reviews are appreciated!

Depending on where you are staying I would go up to the Whistler area and play Big Sky Goif and Country Club. By far the best course up around that area. NorthView Golf Course in Surrey has two course, the Canal and the Ridge, both are good tracks and the Ridge was host to the Vancouver PGA event in the early 2000's. If you have the opportunity to get onto a few of the private course they are well worth the money. Capilano Golf and Country Club is in the top 3 in Canada, Point Grey, Shaughnessy Golf Club, Marine Drive Golf Club are all great courses. Hope this helps and feel free to shoot me a PM when you are in town if you need an extra tag along.

Must agree with Canuck here. Went to Canada, drove from Calgary to Vancouver and played many golf courses on the way. Vancouver really has some amazing golf courses, then I would recommend going to Vancouver Island and playing Jack Nickalus course there. I believe its caled Bear Mountain. Amazing views, good facilities and very well mainted golf course.

Big Sky Golf is definately one to reccomend. However there is a fair amount of water, and fairways can be a bit narrow. Staff there is great, super friendly and pretty good club house meals! Do not go to the Nicklaus North course in Whistler, completly overrated and really dissapointed me,waste of time and money.

Hope your enjoy your trip! If you need more information, feel free to send me a pm.

UBC's course isn't bad - not as nice as the above courses, but if you're staying in Vancouver, convenient. Doesn't drain well though.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I can't believe I forgot some of the Island course. Bear Mountain is a great course that will please the eye for sure. Another eye pleaser but tough target golf type track is Furry Creek which is just before Squamish on your way to Whistler. I would also have to agree that you should stay away from the Whistler course like Nicklas North. The only Whistler course besides Big Sky would be Whistler Golf Course.

Don't know if you've already gone, but if you haven't I'll throw in some more information... and if you need an extra, just send me a PM

Whistler courses are great, my two favourites are Chateau Whistler and Nicklaus North. Not a big fan of Furrey Creek, although a beautiful golf course, I refer to it as Calendar golf on steriods.

In Vancouver proper, outside of the private courses mentioned by Canuck, I can recommend Fraserview... a very sold, parkland golf course. One of my favourites. UBC or University Golf course is an excellent woodlands golf course.

Outside of Vancouver... in no particular order

1) Mayfair Lakes in Richmond is a nice course, it has hosted a Canadian Tour event for a few years, open and it can often be windy. Good layout, lots of water, and always in good condition.

2) Northview Golf & Country Club... about a 45 minutes drive from downtown, but totally worth it. This Arnold Palmer design hosted the PGA Tour's Air Canada Championship for 8 years. A solid test of golf.

3) Morgan Creek Golf Course... its a good, tough layout... the only drawback is the residential setting but it has some great holes. 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 17 and 18 would stand the test anywhere.

4) Futher out, Swan-e-set has 2 18 hold championship courses... a few memorable scenes from Happy Gilmore shot here

I've played every decent course in the Vancouver area public and private and I would have to say my favourite by far is Shaugnessy Golf & CC. It's private, but if you can get on, it will be a memorable round. The course is always in imacculate shape, and it hosted the Canadian Open in 2005.

Good luck... hope you have a great time.

Cheers, Allan

I haven't played a whole lot of mainland courses, but if you make your way over to the island there's some real gems here.

First up-Victoria Golf Club
It's private & you'll need to call to get it set up, but it's worth it. Such a beautiful heritage course right along the ocean.

2-Bear Mountain. Two Nicklaus 18's. The Mountain course is the tougher & more amusing of the 2. It's got a sweet little 19th hole at the top of the mountain.

3-Gorge Vale-another nice older course with alot of character.

4-Cordova Bay-really nice track. Very good conditioning.

I'm sure i'm forgetting some Victoria area courses. There's some nice ones further north up the island as well. Storey Creek, Morningstar, Fairwinds, Duncan Meadows, Crown Isle. We've got fifty plus courses packed onto a 460km long island.

If you get a chance to venture a ways outside of Vancouver, there's just a load of beautiful courses to play. Predator Ridge, St Eugenes, Golden, Tobiano, Talking Rock.

Golden is a ways out, but is a gem. The town only has about 7000 people & the course is tucked up in the mountain behind them. Very natural. Moose, bear, deer sightings are pretty common. The 2nd hole has the distinction of being my worst scoring hole ever. I love it.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
