I am going to the University of Delaware next year and i am wondering if anyone know of any good courses around Newark for the occasional round. Good driving ranges would be appreciated too. Thanks!

To be honest there's a lot of country clubs around newark but not a lot of public courses in newark. However if you are willing to drive a little there is a lot of nice courses in the west chester area of PA. I lived in west chester for a couple years and never really found much in de period. If you get a chance go play glen mills golf club in west chester it's a spectacular course. I'm sure there's some nice public courses around newark I just never managed to find them. Good luck

I disagree there are some great courses near UofD. Right up the street is Deerfield - used to be on of the DuPont/MBNA private courses. White Clay Creek is also not far away and also top notch

There do appear to be a lot of courses that offer 3-4K memberships and also offer daily play rates at about $40. If I am able to play on the Delaware club golf team they play at Deerfield, so I was looking for something cheaper. One of the ones that I seem to like (judging on websites and rates) is Delcastle Golf Course and it's sister courses Rock Manor Golf Course and Ed Oliver Golf Club , which are all in Wilmington. Delcastle seems to have a good range and a decent course, and they all have pretty good rates (though Rock Manor is on the pricier side).

OK you didn't mention your price range. You can find some online and discount books around that drop those prices.

The 3 courses you mentioned are now all managed by BIlly Casper Golf. Rock Manor had a significant makoever before it re-opened hence the higher price. It certainly is a nice course.

Delcastle is owned by the county and Porky Olivers by the city of Wilmington (it just reverted back from the county last year). Both had been a bit rundown over the years with little investment. I am not sure how much investment upgrade has been done. Porky's is a par 69 and many think it is 'too short' but both courses have a loyal following.

A bit further out 896 you will find Chisel creek - which can be reasonably priced though it is an 'odd course' to me in terms of layout. I heard they had some problems with their greens last year. Also out that way is Inniscrone which opened as a private course, then a high end daily course and now owned by the municipality. It has the love/hate short par 3 on the front 9. Not sure of the quality this year.

Good luck

Thanks! You are right I should have specified my price point, but I checked out the websites for Chisel Creek and Inniscrone and they defintely look reasonable. I will have to check them out when I get there.

You wouldn't be talking about the par 3 that is insanely downhill and really short? I really like that short par 5 on the front always make me feel like a long hitter.
