I have been hitting my longer irons right lately, not horrific just a straight block so I end up right of my target (just of green etc)
It is mainly with my 4-7 irons, sometimes I hit them straight but mostly I seem to lose them right, more off the tee than the deck.
The guys I played with yesterday (5/7/8 HC) said that the strikes were sweet enough and they felt good to me, plus I did not lose any distance but it is getting annoying....

9-PW/54/60 I hit straight.

I am wondering if it may be an alignment issue (not sure though as 9-PW/54/60 are ok), I am gonna work on this at the range but just after your thoughts, any idea's guys?

My driver/3 wood/hybrid I hit with a fade but these start out left and end up on target (ish)

Your trying to help your longer irons into the air, which opens the clubface. Practice infront of a mirror or video camera and try to maintain your spine angle with the longer irons.

I'm going to take a shot here and ask (guess) if the 4 goes more right than the 7-iron? I mean, progressively downward in club, are you less off target?

If yes, I'm going to say that somehow you're getting too inside to out with the clubface open on these mid-irons. Why do I say that? Because I've been blocking my irons right and am fighting the same inside move. The guy above is right; you (and me) are trying to 'help' it into the air instead of starting on plane and getting through the ball 'down the line.'

That's my guess ...

Alignment could definitely be an issue. However, if the alignments are reasonable the issue is then altering the clubface orientation relative to the club path at impact. To hit a straight push the face and path almost match. To make the ball draw the path needs to move outward LONGER. Handle forward, shoulders square, and lower body weight forward are the best places to start.

If you are blocking your shots next time you finish watch where your hips are pointing, I bet that that they are ponting to the right or the direction your ball is heading. You have to figure out why you are not completing your shot and why your hips are not pointing at the target.

Before you try too many adjustments, I'd check the angle of your clubface at impact. I'd be willing to bet you're just not squaring the clubface all the way, and the open face is causing the ball to go right.

I've been reading a lot of tips in magazines lately that seem to suggest that the angle of the clubface at impact has more to do with where the ball goes than the path of the swing. But that's a topic that is still up for debate...

Cheers all, KS you may have something here, kinda feels like I don't complete the swing when they go right maybe I am not, would that cause them to block?

As for the difference in how far right I would say they are pretty much all the same.

Well I had a range session yesterday as it was too wet to play (bloody British weather) I worked on alignment and trying to finish my shots with my hips and shoulders square to the target, the alignment was not far off but I think that the issue was not completing the shot, every shot in my warm up that I blocked right I held the finish and my hips were pointing in that direction.

So I worked with a club on the floor for alignment to make sure I was on target and focused on swinging smooth to a complete finish and I have gotta say I struck the ball so cleanly it was great, I started hitting the ball so much straighter and with the same fade that I have with my woods, I also gained a few yards as well.

I hit my 6 and 4 irons off the deck and for a first time practice of getting the hips and shoulders square at finish I am over the moon with the results, I did hit a few left with the 4 iron but that was me over doing the rotation.

So cheers for ya help guys

P.S. I gotta say as well that a focused practice session actually picking targets and using a club for alignment, then working on hitting that target with different clubs was much better than just trying to hit balls straight on a range.

Did you have your clubs fitted? If the lie angle is too flat, you will push shots. Fairly simple fix, and easy enough to check. Go to a golf shop, and hit them on a lie board. Pings can be bent pretty easily by a good clubmaker; they're hard to bend, but they are durable, and rarely break. Also, you can send them back to Ping, and they will bend them to your desired lie, and change the dot color.

Yes mate they are custom fit, White Dot (3 degree up) and 1/4" longer shafts, have not had them checked since I got them last October, I did check however before buying them (I also played this setup on my G10's and I have not changed in 2 half years) so will hit some balls off a strike board next time I am at my local shop just to make 100% sure.

Cheers Shanks

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
