Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a replacement stock shaft (or after market if available) for a Nike VR Str8 Fit Driver? I was out golfing yesterday and the shaft broke right at the hosel/adapter. The club head's threads are undamaged and it would be easy to just screw in a new shaft. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Thank You.

Have you taken it back to the retailer? They may replace it for free if it's still under warranty and you have the receipt.

It's surely under warranty, unless you have been slamming it against the ground or misusing it.

And if it isn't covered under warranty, you can buy a new shaft from the retailer. They will probably have to order it from Nike.

Wow, talk about ironic. The same thing happened to my VR shaft in the exact same position on the shaft (3 inch long crack from the hosel). I didnt purchase it from Golfsmith and was ready to drop down a good sum on a new shaft, but they said I could have a new shaft today and would be charged or they'd send it back to Nike on my behalf to get it fixed/replaced by them. So be it, I had it sent back to Nike and am now awaiting its return. Very odd, but brings up a slight cause for concern knowing this happened to someone else too...

It happenned to me too! I actually bought a used one last week (2/10/2011) at Golfsmiths.  It was very weird to find a used one so fast but oh well, i saved a few bux and plus this club was in pristine condition. I was so excitied  and went to the driving range immediately and bought a small bucket of balls.  I was smoking this driver with the first 3 balls and on the fourth CLINK ..... the damn head flew off. The project x 60 just snapped, tore right off!!WTF right? Anyways I returned the USED club immediately to Golfsmiths and they said they can send it to Nike and have it fixed in 2 weeks for free. Man I was so bummed, i just told them to give me my money back and headed to Roger Dunn! hahahaahahha. To make a long story short, i ended up buying a new Nike Victory Red Pro driver at Roger Dunn and got fitted for free and giving this driver a mulligan. If something happens again, you guys will be the first to know!!!!

Hit em good.......................................

I had this exact thing happen to me too!! Luckily I had only owned my driver for a few weeks when it happened, so they just sent it back to Nike for me and had it fixed for free. Try searching eBay for a new shaft. You may get lucky...

I am worried about this happening to me. I wonder if a batch of shafts were faulty.....some sort of moisture build up making them brittle or something. Maybe I should buy a new shaft for it just in case.

Its not the shaft, its the glue used to attach the shaft to the hossel. Your shaft is fine, your glue probably isnt. Haha. I think you should just get a new driver. Hahaha

Same thing is happening to me, I'm wondering if I can contact Nike directly...it appears the store I bought it from is now out of business.  Anyone know if I need the receipt if I send it back to Nike directly?

If all else fails I've seen the STR-8 ferrule on ebay. I guess you could buy one and just have a local shop re-shaft your club.

My Nike VR Tour Driver (9.5 Degree, Project X 6.0) broke exactly in the same fashion, after less than 2 Months Use.  Bought it on-line... it has been sent back to Nike.  Been gone for almost 2 weeks and I am missing it (particularly with a scramble coming up this weekend).  I went through a fitting process when buying this driver and by reducing backspin by over 30%, I increased total yardage (carry plus roll) by ~30 yards.  Previous driver was Cobra SEZ460, which I hit straight but very high with the Aldila NV HL (high launch) S-60 Shaft.  It was great as I learned the game and to this day for accuracy, but with ~ 3000 RPM backspin, my ball drops from the sky like a rock and I get no carry/roll.  Bottom line: I am a huge advocate of being fitted for a driver... I tried 4-5 others with very marginal improvement, but then this particular combination of club/shaft was the right one for my swing.  It's a great club for me when the head stays on the shaft.

This Breaking Phenomenon: Sounds like a fairly common (if not epidemic) rate of occurrence.  My theory: the Str8 Fit adjusting hosel creates uneven pressure around the circumference of the shaft and the stiff Project X Shafts cannot handle the resulting stress.  My point of failure was a broken shaft, nothing to do with "glue" as somebody suggests above.  I am not seeing many reports of broken "less stiff" shafts... mainly Project X 6.0 and 6.5.  It serves to reason that the stiffer shafts (or more accurately, the higher swingspeeds that necessitate them) would be causing the failures.

My concern: unless something has changed with the Str8 Fit adjusting hosel, or the shaft itself... Nike will send me back another 'time bomb' which will require replacement in another couple of months.  Frustrating situation because we may never find out if/when Nike will address what is causing these failures (as somebody suggests, perhaps just a bad batch of shafts - I hope so).  I guess I will save the shipping box when Nike sends it back to me... it will save me $14 at the UPS Store when I have to send it back again in October.

For future reference, you can get shipping boxes from your local golf stores. They should just give them to you.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
