I don't hit my irons with a full swing, but at about a 3/4 swing, what a loose in distance I gain in control. Whenever I go to a longer swing I have a tendency to come outside in or to come over the top.

When I am practicing at the range and I kind of loose the ballflight I prefer, I use a drill starting with let's say a 30% backswing, full downswing to focus on swingplane and from there up to about 75-80% backswing, full downswing keeping the same swingplane, till I am back on track again.

I am allways amazed by the fact that I don't loose more than only maybe 10-15 yds with a 40-45% backswing.

Last time I did this drill with a driver ..... hitting it well over 200 yds. with that about 40-45% backswing, full downswing......

Next time at the range, try this .... and let me know your experiences, it might be interesting.

It's probably because you're actually consistently hitting the sweet spot with the reduced swing. Hitting that really makes the ball take off if you're not used to it.

I agree. I tried this last summer and consistently produced a low-flight, controlled 220 yard shot. Its a great tool to have if the situation presents itself, but I find that the partial swing doesn't generate enough distance to score well with my long irons. Personally, I'd rather hit a 9i out of th rough than a 5i out of the fairway. Just my .02
