I recently purchased new irons, 4-pw. My old clubs were a nice set of callaway x-14 pros, and I picked up some UFIs, which, needless to say, are completely different. on the x-14s my PW hit about 130, and i could get by with my SW at 100 in. My new PW hits about 150-145 (very strong loft, closer to a 8.5 iron really), and that leaves me in a bind. As I've started hitting more fairways off the tee, I'm left with alot of 120ish yd approach shots which I don't have a good club for (ironically my slice used to leave me far enough away from the green that I usually had a good club for whatever distance). Question is, what should I get? I've thought about a 48, 52 wedge combo, or a 46, 50 combo. PW is lofted at 43 I think and my SW is the standard 56. Thanks!

PW is 43'! WOW! I guess that I'd suggest a 48'/52' combo myself. This, of course, depends on how far you hit each of them. It's easy to tweak a wedge by a degree or two if you find that you want to change the gaps later though.

Try to find the original GW at 48.5* as full wedges are "best" with the set's irons, from there just add a few specilist wedges like a 52/56 or 54/60 whatever you like best.

As for topics on gaps or wedge choices, 3-5 threads any week, so just use the search option and you will find whatever you want to know.

43 is my 9 iron. I'd say then you'd do 48/54 with your remaining wedges. If your irons are that strong, how in the world are you hitting your 4 iron consistently (or maybe you aren't)? Sheesh!

I've never had to hit my 4 iron in a round yet, though on the range, it's not a problem; It's actually closer to a 3 iron which is fine. I used to hit a 2 iron blade in high school, that I had found in my garage, so long irons really aren't a problem for me.

I just picked up a 48 actually :)

    • I would recommend spending some time at the range and film your swing. You can post it in the Member Swings thread. At the range, you can figure out how to control the driver a bit more. We can offer some pointers once you post in the Member Swings section.
    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
