Dynamic Gold SL

I recently became aware that the shafts in my irons are really heavy, comparatively speaking. I play DG S300 now and settled on them versus the PX 5.5 because I like the lower (again, relatively) ballflight they give me. Relative to some of my playing partners, I feel that my irons weigh maybe 20-30% more.

On to the question: who has experience with the SL series? Do they play the same, only lighter? Or will my ballflight increase? I wouldn't mind the extra yardage (currently 155yd 8i) but don't want to mess with the occasional sky-ball...

You win some, you lose some.

Heavier shafts mean more control, and it always will be.

The SL has the same core concept of the True Temper family---- meaning while the shaft itself is lighter than other model from True Temper, it still has high kick point. Now if you compared the SL to DG, you will see the club that is lighter by at least 20 grams. The SL is 106 grams in all flexes, while the DG starts at 123 up to around 130 grams. That's a lot of weight missing from each one of your clubs.

If you have no problem with accuracy, changing to lighter shafts can be nice.

I have the SLs in my Adams A4s and really like them. They are not too flexible even though the are lighter. My swing speed for a 6 iron is around 80 - 85 and I have no control issues. I've tried the DG and PX 5.5 and like the SLs better.

How does the GS95 compare to the SL?

The GS 95 has very similar weight range when compared with the SL. However, these 2 models provide different ball flights. The GS 95 would give you a higher ball flights, while the SL leans more towards piercing trajectories.

My X20 irons have the stock Uniflex shaft - midkick and 106 to 120 grams in weight.

Clubfitter where got them suggested I might consider reshaft with DG R300 SL - keep ball a bit lower, and pick up clubhead speed with less weight. SL weight is 106 grams, and trims to just under 100 grams.

The True Temper website contains weight, performance and trim info on all its shafts.

That's where I got the background. Has anyone played both shafts in the same flex that can testify whether or not the ballflight will be higher with the SL?

From a science fair standpoint, the SL - Superlight - would hit the ball slightly higher because it generates more clubhead speed than a standard weight DG. But, I don't know if you would notice it with the naked eye - would probably need comparable launch monitor readings to tell the difference.

If you got the HL - high launch - this would create a higher ball flight.

BTW, if you want testimony, find a golf shop with a demonstrator kit (Mizuno, Titlelist) that allows you to interchange shafts. Try the 6 iron in both SL and standard DG shaft - see if the monitor picks up a height difference.

The only experience I have with a DGSL300 shaft is in my 2 iron. The ball flight I believe is higher than my 3 iron when comparing the two. SL shafts feel very light which I wouldn't mind in something long like the 2 iron but definitely would not want it in a shorter iron where accuracy is important.

The DG SL launches lower than the standard DG.

 

I play DG S300 and love them, but I do sometimes wonder what advantages a lighter iron shaft might offer especially in the longer irons.
